  1. It realy depends on Make Linux "Gorgeous," Says Ubuntu Leader · · Score: 1

Well It depends on people using it. I remember that when I escaped from Windows I was so happy that my desktop was clean and simple without distracting pictures and logos. I love functionality Gimp is perfect example BUT . Unfortunately this approach does not attract new people to help you out with your project or use your project. If you want to attract people things have to look polished What's even more important it has to be useful and beautiful :) just like amarok :) So what are the real reasons to make your app attractive ? On every 100 users there is a programmer to help you out with your project. That's just the way it is :) Of course if you are not too egocentric and you really want to share your code. (and your app is not the only choice) But on the end ...it really depend on people using it. I still love Lyx for writing but I'm sure my sister wouldn't want to touch it :)

The real problem for those who want to dig deeper into embeded linux is lack of schematics for constructing this kind of boards. As an old electronics and Linux enthusiast I'd love to use this kind of boards 4 my hobby projects and play with different IO devices. Unfortunately I can't find one suitable site to realy start doing that. The only project that was close was uClinux. But you can't find schematic for their boards there either. IS THAT REALY OPEN SOURCE THINKING ? I have no intetion to buy boars since I want to extend it with my IO ports (I2C).... Or I better stick to my old compiling tool (SDCC) and their range of microcontrolers. Anyway try doing this by yourself and you'll see that starting such thing is realy hard. Hope someone will give something back to comunity. Right now it seems only big coorporations can build such devices and they don't give a shit about comunity.

It's sad that something like that can happen in USA. I always believed that 1st amendment means something there. USA is turning into a police state just like Soviet Union under comunism. Except that there was police watching over public not fellow citizens. And the reason for such acts of stupidity is fear. If you still thik you have democracy in USA and if you still belive in your "way of life" and 1st amendmant please don't do something so stupid. I belive there is a lot of such blogs in our coutry and nobody ever says anything. Especialy not to 17-year-old student. I agreee it is something completly different if someone writes down something like "I will place a bomb in school tommorow" or such. In our schools we have psychologist on each school taking care of such things. The action that would be taken in our country for such act if any would be a long talk with principle and psychologist. If that wouldn't work they would transfer him to other school. Court ? Yeah make some more fear and more sheeps without brains....But still fear is cheaper then doing it our way.

Ahm it's a great article and in a way I totaly agreee. But I'm afraid that the time of gadgets and terminals is coming back from simple reasons. One reason is that terminals consume less power. Second reason is evolving market of web services. If we are talking in years. Probably we will have an era of mixed web/local applications now for few years but in 20 years things are going to change.Market is just too filled with gadgets that will eventualy turn into some kind of terminals / certain purpose machines. And the key for this thing to happen is power consuption.

  9. Gates is a CONSOLE time if you like it or not on Gates Claims PC Era Not Over Yet · · Score: 2, Insightful

The end of PC era? Yes in a way it is true. But not by replacing PC with gadgets like some people think. It is time for more connectivity. Today computers are too powerful for tasks they are dealing with. As more and more gadgets are internet aware and speeds of local/home connections are growing it's time for some kind of central computer oriented structure.
I see house with a powerful server and large data storage with different connectivity options. One thing that will certenly change soon is that other computers/gadgets are going to be more purpose made (Digital TV, VOIP phone, movie purchasing etc will all connect to server). And things are going this way already. Just think about game consoles etc. Personal computer as we know it today will stay but in a form of laptop or low power console with storage and applications built on a home server. When avarage speed of home connection is going to be sufficient there will be no need for home servers and we will probably have to buy some data storage space on net and decide which OS to boot on our console that day and which programs to use.I predicted this happening in 1996 and things are going this way ever since with some huge movements lately. In terms of software development Linux and open source has a bright future. Reason for this is quick adoption of new hardware structures(processors) and internet . Microsoft is aware of this situation and will do/is doing anything to keep afloat this movement but it will make a huge problems for them too keep with such a quick process and still keep the quality of their products. I hope open source movement is aware of this happening and will use it's advantages.

I'm now using Dapper for a month or so. It is already very stable. But there are still some things to be fixed. For example madwifi-ng that worked perfectly on my AMD64 Brezy, is not working on my netgear card any more. Then there are standard isues with plugins for firefox to make it fully functional as desktop on AMD64.And since Ubuntu is mostly desktop distribution there SHOULD be a way to make this goodies work! Otherwise why bother sending AMD64 install/live CD-s over shipit ?? People that need linux for servers download their CD anyway. At least what you could do is to make a script to install 32bit firefox and other 32bit programs. It took a long time for me to get all those forums and make it work on Brezzy. And I don't feel like doing all that again.Just too time consuming.

Sometimes I tnx god for Synaptic and Automatix...but sometimes you just can't use that. Ususaly this is when you have to modify scripts nso. I usualy write a bash script to install all those goodies to other people...I don't want to hang on the phone and tell them what to write in their bash shells. Then I was thinking ...Automatix was very succesful, Synaptic is also great for beginners...Why there isn't such thing as SCRIPT CREATION AND SHEARING ENVIRONMENT ? I mean ...instead of all those long forum talks and instructions...you could just paste a (*.sh) file and things done...for a certain distro. Then if I evolve my idea further...it should be something like synaptic...so you could download templates for configuration..(something like html with forms nso..) with full help support on the same page to make all your women totaly satisfied :)
I still have the feeling that an IT specialist writing a book about Ubuntu or Debian or Gentoo is just like a sexologist writing a book about making love with his wife Jenny...
...after config simple generation of scripts... I think this is a bit of topic...but maybe a good idea :) So this thing I'm taking about could replace Atuomatix and much more ? I don't have time to create such thing...The Idea came from Automatix and someone who posted a wlanconfig instructions which had automatic *.conf configuration. * template distribution (maybe even pool about usability) * simple composition of templates...to get text on a right place and help * shell script generation Why it should be like that ? Cause we all love shell and I realy don't want it to lose all the power like it happens sometimes in Suse Yast. Hope someone likes the Idea....and have time to realize it ...till then I'll just have to use my vi editor and man pages.

Inductance of that copper wire isn't so small and consumption very high too on such servers. large capacitors on the end of that DC line and something like zener diodes should probably do the trick when switching all off. Very simple solution is creating circles of racks around same power supply. :=) but that would look just too futuristic :))) I think this thing could work for servers very close to each other but if you have longer distance DC/DC converters are not so eficient. That idea with 48 volts would be litle bit more eficient only when standard transformer and rectifier would be used and then DC/DC converters for a circle of racks.

I've installed linux as desktop many PC computers.I figured out that people don't have problems with fuctionality -AT ALL but with look and feel of linux apps. People just want their apps to blink and shine ! They need visual setisfaction above all !!! There are some ppl that already care for the look and feel (k3b,Amarok,d4x,GNOME and KDE...). I like simplicity of linux software (they feed us with comercials evrywhere), but my girlfriend or my sister... Just take a look at installers on Windows.Developers spend a lot of time and money to aproach this way to people !! Over the years as linux desktop user I got this feeling that people in this comunity love simplicity above all "GUI -why the hell do you need that..".But first time avarage user just MUST be impressed! People should recognize that application and REMEMBER it. Logos nice special icons and similar make applications unique. For example gedit. They have realy nice logo in their About menu...but I just recently discovered it.Then let's take for example NVU editor. I noticed their logo on the top and imediatly remembered it. Simple eye candy makes the whole difference to some people. I'd love to turn that thing off later but.. :)) Fact is that logos tell "avarage user" that app is not in developing process any more but it is a finished product that can compete. I know you'll think what about themes that you can change inside of KDE or GNOME but that's not enough I guess. So my advice show your GUI's to your girlfriends and let them judge them, make research and get the feedbacks from ppl. You don't need themes for simple apps just that special eye candy.. With this simple aproach, open document standards and working graphic, printer drivers there would be much more then 0.5% Linux users. Have fun playing wit Gimp ! By the way sory for my english :)
