Microsoft wants to get as much money as possible from applications and "special features" running of their data centers. The thing is both Google and Microsoft are "jumping too far" in the future with this if they want to tie average consumer to their server side applications. Why ? Most of the people still don't have network connection fast enough to support this kind of Internet applications. Evolution is going this way but it can't happen before large numbers of people get optical cables to their homes. Bandwidth,is the key. Most of the people are used to get very rich programs from their computers already. Right now this kind of applications can run only from computers and local-home servers. This evolution already started with game consoles, smart phones, tablets with wifi support etc connected with home PC .

My point is don't worry about applications running strictly from servers. Microsoft might try to tie your application on them to make sure you bought your program and keep track of your application(but who cares I use Linux)..Google ?? Something much more then email or something similar to ftp program for storing large amounts of data won't work. PLEASE UPLOAD ONLY FILES SMALLER THEN 5 MB AND MAKE SURE YOU INCLUDE AS MUCH VITAL INFORMATIONS ABOUT YOU AS POSSIBLE ?? :)))

First you need natural demand for this kind of applications and this demand doesn't exist yet because of low average bandwidth people have.

ON THE END THIS TREND EXISTS AND IT IS A THREAT TO PERSONAL FREEDOM. If you really want to stop this uncontrolled server side applications in the future AND THAT COULD AND WILL HAPPEN support applications like eyeOS that I recently installed or other open source server side applications that you could install on home servers and see and control your CODE.

This is the kind of support I was talking about. I know there is no problem with technical support for Open Office. It's true even with Microsoft's new versions of Office suite they have to retrain people.

Gradual adoption of Open Office could be even cheaper. Just install Open Office besides MS Office...right ??Where is the catch? If they do that they spoil partnership with Microsoft what will on the end probably raise prices for MS software/computer.

We all know it's all about keeping a good relationship with Microsoft that they depend on.That's probably also why they don't put public documents on .gov sites. Good old vendor lock in.So ideal transformation to ODF would be.

-give them a good way to convert old .doc documents to ODF (large scale document conversion)
-have a large number of teachers for Open Office suite in the country

I live in Slovenia and I just found similar study comparing transition of government 11.800 workstations to Open Office. It clearly says NO to open source for 3 years. It's a document dating 14.11.2005. This study has a conclusion that migrating software from MS to Open Office is possible and functionality of both packages are more then enough for government needs. The things that changed their mind and are considered greater risk that brings higher costs over this 3 year period are:

    - retraining people
    - doc-> odf conversion (especially concerned about automatic conversion of documents-especially macros in doc files)
    - and of course very concerned about support (there is no company's supporting Open Office - or they have no real business plans) what they see as the greatest risk migrating to ODF !!

This is 5 page document giving some numbers WITHOUT ANY EXPLANATIONS where those numbers came from. The only thing I noticed is that they ware waiting what happens in Munich at the time. They clearly know for IDABC initiative for ODF - ISO format. Their strategy is making public tenders to create support Open Office.
What I'm really concerned about is that there is no plan for gradual adoption of ODF. If there is a serious intent for adopting ODF I'd expect at least .gov sites offering ODF formats as well as .doc and .pdf. THIS IS THE PLACE WHERE REAL TRANSITION SHOULD START AS WELL AS INSTALLING OPEN OFFICE ON GOV COMPUTERS FOR TESTING AND GRADUAL ADOPTION.

Anyway I see this document as excuse to FLOSS community without any REAL intent to change things in the future.
This is the real picture of FLOSS support in EU. The point is that country's in EU take this reports as consideration but on the end they make their own conclusions based on MS deals because they can't make or don't want to make a real cost comparison.

  24. It is FUD on Solid Capacitor Motherboards Introduced · · Score: 1

Like someone already mentioned they are probably switching standard capacitors with tantalum capacitors...AND THAT'S IT. The only difference here is that usually motherboards with standard Electrolytic capacitors as mentioned before can and will dry up in the future on every motherboard. Especially cheap motherboards tend to do that very often. Capacity of this kind of capacitor gets lower and resistance (how quickly capacitor is taking and releasing current gets higher). Capacitor is overheating. Capacitor is usually put in the circuit to dump the voltage drops providing necessary energy on the spot that needs +- constant voltage. CPU and BUS controllers are one of those things that really need large amounts of energy right away...(maybe some other stuff that I don't know about) So THOSE (and only those) capacitors on RIGHT PLACE in the circuit are the one that should be different - Tantalum for over clocking...RIGHT ?? But when you are overclocking you could probably need much bigger capacitors on those places not only different kind of capacitors.Sometimes just because electroly. cap. are so slow we use combination of capacitors (cheaper but sufficient). So if I make a proper conclusion over this subject...Solid capacitors don't dry up thus providing much longer life to the motherboard (servers and such - PROBABLY) but electrolyte capacitors are good enough if they are good quality (and sometimes even more reliable). So this post is a FUD. I wonder if their color will be purple maybe they will use green I don't know...Maybe they will use polyester capacitors making them even bigger ...but when those no life wannabe geek sees this motherboard will buy one of those cause they have a special feature. And that is SAD. My advice ??? Well buy something that is thoroughly tested and company has a good reputation. THAT'S IT
