You're entirely correct, the article is nothing more than sensationalism. It's wrapped up nicely with a big red FUD bow at the top! AKA "the usual", around here.

Brilliant! I often felt the same in grade-,middle-, and high school. Things were very easy for me with regard to the rote and tedium of schoolwork. I didn't like it, but I got through it easily enough. It wasn't until I went to a 4-year university (where I am currently in my 6th year) for an engineering degree that I learned how hard some students have it. The previous 13 years of being conditioned to laziness really screwed me up until I adjusted to the faster pace of a university education.

That would be true if we assume that the people working on free software are programmers by profession. This simply isn't true for a number of people. Also, who's to say that an open source programmer can't work for a private software company during the day? I believe that many FOSS contributors are programmers at their day job, which is a means to an end.

Either way, Stallman isn't saying that software developers shouldn't be paid for their efforts. It sounds to me like he's being realistic about things. I play in a band with friends, though I'm not a musician by trade. I make no money from it, but I enjoy it along with those I play to (I hope). I also program, though I'm not a programmer by trade. My limited skill hasn't produced any quality free software, but I've written some ebuilds for Gentoo and fixed a few bugs here and there. It's all in the spirit of collaboration, dig?

When he gets home, he downloads the GPS coordinates and makes a route which he can display on his webpage with google maps. I'm sure it can be used for far more advanced things. I bet he could make some really crazy stuff if he read this book.

I feel the same way! I'm sure many of you here have read the Linux is not Windows manifesto, but it's appropriate to mention in this situation. I don't like people fooling themselves into thinking that Linux will take over the world and morph into the be-all, end-all solution for everyone. Linux and its associated programs simply aren't built for the same people that want to plug in [insert hardware device here] and have it work without a little bit of research beforehand.

Kowtowing to the "iPod generation" may result in a simpler experience for some end users. However, I fear that too much reliance on closed-source proprietary software will lead to gaps in the community base of open source software once these products go belly-up. A pound-force is still a pound. A pressure is a force per area, such as lbf/in^2 or lbf/ft^2. lbf/in^2 is commonly abbreviated as psi.

The confusion about the US customary units is justified. A pound-force and a pound-mass are different things, which I think is dumb. I prefer to work with pounds-force and slugs, the analog to the SI kilogram.
