I agree completely. I see Linus as a more moderate kind of person--pick the best tool for the job. Not all software that's used has to be open; sure, it would be nice, but it's just not realistic. If closed-source software (or non-free) does the job better than any open-source implementation, why the hell not use the non-free/closed-source implementation? If RMS didn't like it so much, why didn't he write a better tool for the job, or is he too much of a tool himself?

The reason that our letters don't matter is because all you people do is complain here instead of mailing/calling/emailing the people who actually run our country. I have the luck to be in a small state and the ability to go complain directly to the Senators when they're here in the State, if I wanted. If they don't listen, don't re-elect them.

To quote a recent Penny-Arcade news post:

"This next statement could sort of open up into a tangential discussion on modern game design, but suffice it to say, there are no truly original games. There can't be, at least with modern console games, and I refuse to accept "What about Katamari Damacy?!?" Bullshit, I've played enough Super Monkey Ball and Marble Madness to know better. But you need to know recent games, landmark games, the major flops, and the highly expected upcoming releases, because we all copy game design from each other, in every game, going all the way back to Pong and SpaceWar. You need to be able to say "Well, that idea seems like a whole lot of work, when I know that we could just copy the scheme from Super Virtua Soul Machine 9 to do the same thing!""

The same could be said about computers and computer applications of all sorts. Nearly everything has already been done in one way or another, but it's just being built onto and made better (or in some cases, worse. [Insert mandatory MS bashing to get +5 Funny...]) This is a great idea as long as you're not some tinfoil-hat motherfucker.

Except that the recent "crack" was in the foam insulation, not the shuttle itself.

"The start of the move was briefly delayed by the discovery of a crack in the external fuel tank's foam insulation. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration later said the crack was no reason for concern.

The flaw was discovered as the spacecraft was being readied for the first shuttle launch since Columbia fell to pieces, a disaster blamed on a chunk of foam that fell off the tank during liftoff and gashed one of the wings.

NASA spokeswoman Jessica Rye described the flaw as a hairline crack and said that, after sending images of it to the tank's manufacturer in Louisiana, the space agency concluded it did not need to make any repairs.

NASA later said the 1 1/2-inch crack was high up on the shuttle in a spot where, if foam flew off, it would not likely hit the vehicle.

"It's a very, very tiny crack. Very, very narrow . . . well within our experience base," said Mike Leinbach, shuttle launch director. "It was an acceptable condition for flight."

    Okay, let's see...

Livejournal runs on mySQL (with memcached), and has had 970k users update their LJs in the past week. Assume that on average, each journal gets 10 views in that one week (it's probably higher, as there are some really large communities). That's 9.7 million page views in a week, or ~ 40 million a month. Plus the people who just browse and don't have an account.

Slashdot itself uses mySQL..I have no clue about the pageviews, though I know it's in the millions a month.

Google is a mySQL customer. As is Dow Jones, the people that publish the Wall Street Journal and its online editions. So is the NYSE, NASA, the US Census Bureau, everyone's beloved AOL, the Associated Press, Texas Instruments, among plenty others.

Just because mySQL doesn't work for your project doesn't mean it doesn't for others. Not to mention that it's free and ships with almost every major Linux distro out there.
