    Netscape-the-browser-v8 is a sorry POS. It came as an alternative to IE on my last 2 boxes. Locked the whole freakin O/S up when I tried to start it. Not even ctr-alt-del helped; had to do a hard reboot. Then downloaded and installed Firefox & Opera. I don't know who is sorriest AOL for releasing it or HP for putting it on the desktop. Nestscape 8 is an abomination and a disgrace to the memory of Old [=Real] Netscape (v3-4.x) which I happily used back in the days of Win3.11, Cramp-U-serve, an' all that.

    I keep seeing the statement that MS has smart people, as if the perception they don't was their only problem. IMHO, it isn't. As much as I hate to credit MS for anything, Excel is a superior spreadsheet, possibly the best. MS mice are good, too. What MS lacks more than anything else is a history of integrity. Shipping date over stability or safety. MS has been sued more over IP misappropriation than anyone else I can think of. The term vaporware may not have been coined for MS, but they are the epitome of shrewd use of it. MS would be less dangerous if they weren't so smart: if smarts + unlimited greed + 0 ehics doesn't add up to MS, I don't know what does.

    I can't speak for anyone but myself, but I'm sure it would be in the hands of people we can't trust, e.g., the turnover of all phone records to the NSA by ATT, Verizon, et cet.

    Back to topic, a little Googling failed to turn up more detailed data, even at the research institution sponsoring the study, the University of Western Australia Murdoch University, see here. I did come across the images of something else of interest on Rottnest Island, the quokka, which is not only more dignified and intelligent than the typical RIAA-oid, but a lot cuter, too.

    Actually, it does run Linux binaries. The earlier versions required binary compatibility to be added post-install. Since PC-BSD moved to FreeBSD kernel 6.0, Linux binary compatibility is pre-configured. There is no post-installation configuration now. Just add packages, either by .pbi, pkg_add, or ports. And yes, Kim, I know you were kidding.

    If a hardware or software distributor is in violation of the GPL, the vendor has no liscence to use the GPL code. Period. Not even end of discussion, because there is nothing to discuss. The vendor is on the wrong side of copyright law, and the vendor's only legal options are to a) remove the GPL code, or b) get into compliance. What's to discuss? That hurts? Tough shit.

    Same with MS and others' EULAs, if MS determines you are in violation of their EULA, and revokes your "rights" to use it, you are legally required to remove the MS software from your system(s). Period. Nothing to discuss. That hurts? Tough shit.

    If the MPAA did what is alleged, it is a felony violation of 18 U.S.C 2701, Chapter 121Stored Wire and Electronic Communications and Transactional Records Act. Please dont take my word for it here's a link to an official government site. As they contracted for it a conspiracy may have taken place.

    Actually, I agree that piracy is wrong. Be that as it may, two wrongs do not make a right, just two wrongs. Why isn't the FBI investigating alleged felonious conduct by the MPAA? As a champion of the law, I trust you would support such an investigation, let the chips fall where they may? If pirating movies is wrong (agreed), why aren't GPL violations wrong? Do you agree?

    How do you guys explain away the fact that Osama & Co take credit for 9-11? How do you explain away the fact that Al-Qaeda takes credit for most of the violence in Iraq even now? Are the videos of people having their heads sawed off with knives actually evidence that Al-Jazeera is part of a White House cabal? What about the rape and butchery of all those Russian children in Beslan?

    How will you explain it away when your Al-Qaeda heroes pop a nuke in a big European or North American city? As long as you have your heads in the sand or up your asses, you may as well start making up some fantasy explanation now, because it is only a matter of time.

    And one more thing ... crack cocaine, or methamphetamines, or whatever drugs you may be using are not your friends.

    Thanks for the warning, That is a vile EULA, even by MS standards. Particularly troubling is the business about it getting into the BIOS, WTF is that supposed to be about?! I will never accept that EULA. I was thinking of booting my Windows partition tomorrow to let it update, as its been 2 or 3 months. Plan A:shut the box off, then 1) disable eth0, 2) reboot, 3) disable Automatic Updates, 4) shutdown, 5) re-enable eth0, 5) reboot, 6) cherry-pick the alleged security updates, and 7) reboot into Linux. OR Plan B: reboot and then 1) install another Linux distro or FreeBSD over Windows, and be done with it (no steps 2-6 in Plan B).

    Jackson's findings of fact were not overturned. They are here. Penfield's Conclusions of Law and Order are here. The findings of fact were not overturned. Both are available as .html or .pdf or wpd files (but not, interestingly, as .doc [=MS Word] files).

    Penfield's remedies are here. The gutted final judgement produced by the DOJ cave-in and the Appeals court kowtowing to MS is here here. It's a mere slap on the wrist. "Pretty please, play nice, now, or at least don't get caught flagrantly breaking the law." I wonder how much $jack the DOJ and US Appeals court judges cost. Less than an hour's profits, I'd bet. Ask your MS pals.

    The problem is that Microsoft succeeded by doing this, while the others did not.
    The real problem is that MS broke the law in order to succeed. In the eyes of many, it is continuing to break the law whhile thumbing its nose at those trying to get it to obey the law. Or do you believe MS should be above the law? How is allowing MS to use illegal methods to exterminate the competition in any field going to help the consumer in the long run? When they have finished crushing everyone else, they will be able to charge $100, or $200 a month, or $500 a month for their OS, and there won't be anything you can do about it, except to pay up or quit using your computer!
    Almost anyone can install Windows on almost any computer.
    Oh really,how about a SPARC? or a ppc-Apple MAC? Seriously, hand Joe-Sixpack an OEM disk and ask him to install it on a blank hard drive, and get everything sound, video etc working right. Bring some sandwiches & a thermos of coffee... or a case of beer & a couple of pounds of pretzels... whatever floats your boat. Should be a full day of amusement. OTOH its 20 or 30 minutes with Mepis, Ubuntu or even PC-BSD. Chances are good ol' Joe won't have to know spit--or even be sober. Actually, the last time I installed FreeBSD took less time than the last time I installed XP, even including writing the .xinitrc file and enabling sound--both of which required less time than loading video or sound card drivers for XP.

    It's only a matter of time before Microsoft and other large companies start to make aggressive patent moves against Linux, and as far as I'm concerned, Linux deserves every single bit of crap that's thrown at it.

Actually your beloved MS and its proprietary suck-buddies are a lot more likely to be going after one another, as there's more profit to be had by Symantec vs. MS, or MS vs. Oracle or Adobe vs. MS than MS vs. Puppy Linux, where they might stand to win some poor bastard's stack of bills.
