Perhaps whenever they see the alert, they will see a question next to the alert that asks if they wish to opt in/out of this program in the future. If they don't answer, then they'll continue to get the alerts AND asked to opt in/out. Alternatively facebook can place the alerts in the left/right column so it is not directly in the news feed.

There are many HTML/JS only sites that do not work for these new touch devices because the developers are still stuck in the mouse click/hover mindset. Same holds true for Flash sites/games. Like HTML/JS developers, Flash Developers also need to be mindful to ensure that their creations work on these new touch devices. Developers need to make tweeks to existing code. There shouldn't be a need to rewrite a site/game from scratch just because one individual deems it so.

Obviously, you're not the target audience for Flash. In my opinion, if you don't have the flash plugin, you're limiting yourself with a lot of useful sites. I personally use firefox's adblock plugin which allows me to block Flash embedded files from a particular source. That way I only see useful embedded flash instead of the annoying flash ads.

But that's my opinion and I appreciate that you may have another.

But.... why would you want to?

Why would you want to allow being able to view images on websites? The answer to this question is similar to why you would want to allow being able to view Flash.

Sure images can be used to display advertisements and track your browsing, but it adds to your web experience. It's more visually appealing. The same can be said for flash. Sites built using flash are more visually appealing. They provide more functionality. For example, there's a site where you can upload your photo and see how different hair styles look on you. This is good if you're considering a new hair style, plus it's fun just to play around and give yourself funny hairdos. If you don't have flash, you can't use this site.

Being able to view different hair styles on yourself may not be your cup of tea, but it's just one example of what flash can do.

Flash can allow you to manipulate and share office documents (powerpoint, word, etc) remotely from the web. If you're a business user you may be interested in this.

Flash allows you to play video games.

The possibilities of Flash is almost endless. But if you just want to view the web for its reading content, then by all means continue not to install flash for it's not for you. But don't advocate to people not to install it for the sole purpose of protecting them from pop up ads. If you do that, you might as well tell them not to connect to the web for all the other dangers out there.

  20. Re:How about. . . on Firefox Improves Pop-Up Ad Blocking · · Score: 2, Insightful

How can you NOT have flash installed. There are many legit sites that include flash. It provides much more functionality than straight HTML pages. You can include Video and sound. You're not restricted to the page placement limitations of HTML pages. You can create full functional applications with Flash where you cannot do the same with HTML.

If you're not installing flash because a few bad apples cause popup ads to appear, then you're totally missing out what Today's Net can do.

  23. Digital Finger Prints - Yes. DRM - Never on When Would You Accept DRM? · · Score: 1

I'll never get anything that is DRM'd, which would restrict how I use my own property. However, if they start selling media that includes digital fingerprints (and it's priced appropriately), then I would have no gripes at making a purchase. I think the only people that would be opposed to digital watermarks where your personal information is placed on the media (e.g. name, IP address, date of purchase, etc) would be people who want to illegally share/sell their media. The only problem I see with this compromise is when it comes time when I don't want the media anymore and I want to legally sell my property to someone. (Like selling a used book/record/CD that you no longer want in a garage sale.) In that case, how do you get the new person's info onto the digital fingerprint of the digital media? That's the only problem I see with this solution. But it's a MUCH better solution than the one that the labels and studios are trying to brainwash us in thinking is the only solution.

What branch of the military was this? I've seen similar threads where military personal personnel (navy, army, marines) chimed in and said quite the opposite as what you just stated. According to them, it is NOT the practice of the military to address female officers as "Sir" I did a Google group search and one person said, "My only thing is that I was in the military for over then years. I did four years active duty as a Navy Corpsmen, and later as a medic in the Army, and all I have to say this, If you ever, ever called a female officer "sir" you would be in serious trouble." Even if a branch of the US military does in fact refer to their female officers as "sirs", then I still think its wrong. It's like saying women can't be treated as equals (or in this case superiors) unless they're treated like men. What's wrong with treating a woman officer as a superior without disregarding that she is a woman?
