Yep, gmail or not, if "they" really wanna find out what you've been saying, they can. I just don't see them wanting to with me (I say nothing that'd interest them... if you do, bully for you!)
If only they had this a few years ago during the enron mess, they could have claimed "we didn't fiddle the accounts, we just saved it using lossy compression techniques".
Just like the "our intelligence wasn't wrong about Sadam having WMD's, the satalite images just come to us as lossy JPEGs"
I was gonna make some kinda 4th dimension joke about it using time to achieve it's compression ratio, rather than just compressing the amount of space used... but it sounds like that's actually pretty much true!
Oh well, saves my brain power trying to word the joke:-p
"The first thought that comes to mind is that Intel would like nothing more than to subvert Linux so that it runs best on Intel architecture"
There's two ways to do this: 1 - Improve Linux on Intel architecture. We're talking about improvements here, can't see any problem with them doing this. 2 - Cause problems with Linux running on non-Intel architecture. Erm... I just can't see this happening. Eg, getting a patch into mainline kernel with improves it isn't the easiest thing in the world (with the amount of people who will disagree with how it's done, how it should be done etc). One that hurts performance/stability on entire architectures, is gonna be even tougher.

I pick up the phone and speak MODEM. I can only manage a low baud rate at the moment, but the level of privacy you get is pretty good, no worries about anyone looking over your shoulder at the screen

Gmail vs Pine

Oh give it a rest. This "corporate is single entitle, not to be confused with the team of people (plural) that it actually consists of" thing is getting boring.
It actually really bugs me when people say it (like "it's always in the last place you look!" -- like anyone's gonna keep on looking for something after they've found it?!) but I've stopped bothering to point it out as I usually just get retorts of "pedantic".
I guess people are less concerned with saying what they mean, as long as they sound like they do.
your "Gmail all the way." direction might need some thought
Yeah, while I have no issue with the privacy side (I really don't care that google keeps logs of searches I've performed etc), my "gmail all the way" comment was more a stab at microsoft/hotmail than anything.
I do have my own domain+servers which i use for important emails, and was actually just discussing yesterday with someone gmail's new hosting beta (where you point your MX records at them), and how I couldn't recommend that free service to any of my clients, because you need more than someone who can offer you a service - you need someone who can commit to offering a service. This usually means you're paying them.
I've had my account since around '96, when it was HoTMaiL... then MS bought it. During the process of "upgrading" accounts, my account got wiped (losing years old emails I'd had from friends, oooo I was pissed off with that), and then reset, back to 2meg. Thanks so much for that.
Just had a quick look at it, it's now 250meg, empty, and unused.
Simulations, of weather, bio/chemical/nuclear reactions, searching for extra terrestrial signals in the radio spectrum (okay, kidding about that one)... sciency stuff:-p
Google earth isn't a 30day trial, gmail you get 2.6G+ free space, froogle (unlike others such as kelkoo, dealtime, pricerunner) don't charge for business to list their products... I don't think there could possibly be a case against google for giving one more thing away with their history.

(the point of this post lost due to compression)
A chance to; it's them that gives me the reason to ;-)

Ah, the famous two-legged cheetah... probably yeah.
Did you have a point?
hehe, spot the typo! It's "That's one small step for A Linux, one giant leap for Intel", dummy! ;-)
"Regardless of whether or not the people holding the stick are just as evil"
;-)
No one is as evil as Microsoft! Even Sadam's Iraq was run on OpenSource!
"why intel?"
They offered? AMD haven't? I'm sure Redhat wouldn't have made a decision to NOT work with AMD.

Are we talking about the same Linux?
...like, recompile distro using ICC, change ICC license to be compatible with doing so...? :-p

"addition to had over upon subpoena"
Yeah but really, how many of us is this going to happen to?
You access pine directly from the shell, not from the browser... IOW, quit lynx, and type 'pine'
"Try it sometime"
haha, I might just have to!
That's a worse excuse than "not tonight, I've got a headache". If you don't say what you mean, how can you possible mean what you say?
Everyone in the world read the post?

No, it's being sloppy!
wow... I wonder if this is actually more common
HANDS UP EVERYONE! Who's had their emails wiped (sent items or complete mailbox) by hotmail?

"a hardware platform that will support Windows Vista"
Is more likely than Windows Vista supporting the hardware!
