Well, the Mac versions of Will Wright's other games, such as the Sims, Sims 2, and SimCity, etc are usually 3-6 months later than the PC versions, so we can extrapolate and figure if PC release is June 2007, then Mac release should be September-November 2007, just in time for the Christmas rush!

  17. If we remember other Will Wright console releases on Spore Coming to Consoles? · · Score: 2, Insightful

such as the Sims and Sims 2 console versions, we'll see that he normally allows a smaller subset of images (such as clothing styles, hair styles, body platforms) than in the PC versions, and that they're less modifiable.

My guess, based on his other console versions, would be that the version of Spore on a console may or may not have an online component (based on platform, most likely) but it will have a standard stock set of planet types and creature parts, which may not be quite as rich and adaptable as the PC version will be, but will have a stronger story element, with pre-scripted stories you have to follow to "unlock" additional components for later game play.

Given the wide range of features (eg hard disk storage on PS3 and xBox360 and even Wii addon versions), it may have further limitations as well.

One would definitely hope they'll delay the console release until about 3 months after PC release to:

    a. maximize PC game sales;
    b. hype console sales when they happen due to buzz and "being after the console launch" when fewer games are being simultaneously released; and
    c. fix bugs and problems found in the PC version, since a console version tends to be a frozen code set, unless online patch updates are integrated - note while the Wii, xBox360, and PS3 all have online capability (or can add it), there is no guarantee a player will have a high-speed net connection needed for such upgrades, so it needs to work out of the box.

I'm a data manager in disease research.

    We use paper.

We could have gone to electronic forms with laptops, but there are a number of reasons we don't.

The primary one is user-readability, and verification of intent.

The second one is programming limitations on error checking - what is a permissable response? When dealing with human subjects - and likewise, human voters, one notices they don't always do what you want, but what they want.

Should we have electronic voting machines? Yes. For handicapped people, definitely. But, naturally, those should have a paper audit trail.

But most voting machines would do fine with optically-scanned human-readable paper ballots. In fact, what they don't want you to know is they are just as accurate as the electronic ones, in actual practice.

Now, does this mean the vote is accurate? No, because we're humans. Some people insist on voting for two candidates, or write in Donald Duck. Some people change their minds part way through.

Heck, when I vote, I sometimes decide at the polling place, as I'm voting.

sigh. but absentee also involves coercion and vote-buying, as a church can "suggest" everyone votes their family's ballots at the church, using the official guide, and they mail them from there. Also, the "patriarch" (father) can take all the ballots, fill them out, and then have them sign them.

    Which will happen.

  23. Re:This is NOT a reason to register absentee on Worst Ever Security Flaw in Diebold Voting Machine · · Score: 1

Good point. However, for most US voters, the only choices they get under most states' systems are:

    1. Diebold and other easily hacked electronic voting machines, which are easily fixed to swing an election; or
    2. Vote absentee by mail.

Option 2 is better than option 1.

Best is a human-readable optical ballot with a printed dual receipt - one for the voter and one for the polling place - with the date/time imprint, a sequence number, and the voter id not using human readable, but a numeric sequence that can be deencrypted if needed from the info on the voter receipt.

But most states don't give you a CHOICE of machines.
