Well, a 1,000 acres or more is preferable for all the support buildings and security reasons, but yes, the 'power block' can be under 100 acres.

Have you factored in the existing land use from the Chernobyl accident? 2640 Square kilometres of farmland (652358 acres), 1900 sqkm of forest (469500 acres). What about land use from mining, enrichment, test facilities etc? To be fair that existing land use should also be included. Those sites would be ideal areas for locating wind arrays - if you could find a way to not disturb the radio-active isotopes that settled after the accident.

Anyway, The total maximum capacity of these turbines is 600 megawatts. Modern (ie, built in the last 30 years or in progress) put out double this amount, and they do so 24-7 for an 18 month fuel cycle.

The technology development cycle for nuclear power plants from design to implementation take decades and can only be implemented at build time because it is not cost effective to retro-fit. Where-as the technology development cycle for wind installations is measured in months and is cost effective to retrofit.

  4. Re:Is it IT that's bad... on Moving Away From the IT Field? · · Score: 1

I wonder if people might be better off changing their IT field, rather than leaving the industry completely and starting from ground zero.

huh? Doesn't everyone already do this. I have been in it for 22 years now and I went from sysadmin to programming to dba. IT was my passion since school and the bottom line here is you should only be in IT if you enjoy it because the pressure can really mess with you. I used to play a game and track peoples progress who said they 'got into IT for the money'. I got into IT because I liked learning about things, people who do it only for the money can't really hack the pressure.

People are variable as in any place and respect is something earned, the best advice I can offer anyone is don't be an asshole.

Yes you probably are smarter than a lot of people in the room, but maintaining humility is a key to earning respect in IT, sure geeks prefer you to be right rather than nice, but guess what the rest of the human race prefers - you should really learn about ocytocin responses and body language. So instead of being a prima-donna, be an authority. Instead of being a closed book, let people in - let them like you because your a person and so are they. Learn about business (it's not that hard) because that is why IT departments exist and if can speak like a business person about why a certain course of action is appropriate you will gain respect.

So having said all that I am considering a career change, not because I dislike IT in fact it's been a great adventure (so far) and I have met all sorts of people, but because after all this time I've already been doing other stuff and I like the idea of exploring my capabilities. And it's not just one thing over time I have been making a slow career change into two areas (I haven't decided how they fit together yet) by building my business infrastructure and creating a recording studio (produced a jazz album a few months ago).

I also recently attended a career change seminar and would recommend anyone give this a go if you get a chance. I assessed the possibility of university (no degree for me - would like to formalise my knowledge base), technical school, Army, police, feds, Film production school, sales and business school and a MBA all in less than two hours - totally worth it.

I don't know if this advice is useful to anybody but after 20 years, yes, I have met my share of ungrateful mean spirited people and found it's usually better just to walk away. I've always maintained the moral right to any code I've produced and also my dignity.

This logic just pisses me off right now. NASA is asking for an extra $3 billion per year to build a new viable replacement to the space shuttle. When you contrast the other things the gov't is wastefully spending its money on its ridiculous.

I guess NASA is not big enough to fail. I wonder how the banks are going to behave now they know they are to big to fail and have been rewarded for their risky behavior. I mean you wouldn't expect them just to do the same things again only worse?

It's actually looking pretty bleak for America's space program - in terms of funding, political support and public interest, unfortunately. I think the people actually interested in a space program are, well, here or working at nasa, and some of them are here too. It's sad because it really indicates that Joe public has basically given up on space exploration and has no imagination left.

The same statements that you have made about MS can probably be made about 95% of the Fortune 500.

Multiple Sclerosis is a serious disease and most orgainisations that support MS sufferers are probably tax exempt. Fortune 500 aren't though so it is fair enough that they pay tax. It makes no sense to compare a disease (MS) with a Fortune 500 company.

Microsoft has an accepted two letter moniker of a uppercase 'M' followed by a '$'. I'd suggest that you use that or type 'Microsoft' to avoid any future confusion. I think it's rather offensive to attempt to use the moniker 'MS' for Microsoft just to sate the Microsoft 'fanboi' attitude - after all Microsoft have taken enough things from the community. I type 'Microsoft' despite the existence of the accepted two letter moniker 'M$'. It's fairly vapid for Microsoft's fanatical supporters to trample some minority groups ability to be recognised because they are too lazy to type Microsoft.

I think, unintentionally, you have highlighted the problem. These aren't left or right political issues and as environmental policy get more politicised the less emphasis there is on actually doing something and 'environmental' issues become a political football.

Lets be realistic about what is occurring here, the issue is not about the environmental impact of a cat or a dog, it's actually a distraction from the real issue of our entire fucked-up economic system that models infinite economic growth on finite resources. CO2 emmissions is yet another externality of this economic system. Dogs have been with us since we were barely human and this economic system 50-100 years. Yet we have to fix everything other than the economic system?

Fuck that, I'd rather own a dog.

In the meantime lets see the carbon footprint of little things like coffee cups, plastic shopping bags, a big mac or cling wrap. Invisible things like a cargo ship full of goods produced somewhere else around the world, maintaining a military presence somewhere so we can all have the privilege of getting caught up in a motherfucking traffic jam every fucking day. What about a traffic jams carbon footprint?

It's so fucking stupid I want to scream, so lets not politicise this anymore. Both sides of politics have failed us by being on cruise control for the last 20 years and DOING NOTHING. These are structural issues indicative of these failures.

How big should the economy be? When will sustainability be an economic indicator instead of some trendy feel good 'paint it green thing'?
