  1. I don't know why they would risk it on Realtek's Wireless Driver Drives Thoughts of an Apple Netbook · · Score: 1

Apple has a history of allowing development by third parties for a time, and then ordering a "cease and desist" leading to a loss of the development costs and killing any future profit. I suspect Jobs fears someone actually doing apple better than apple. Just a guess on my part, but it would no doubt erode his business model. As I remember he killed the upgradable Umax clones etc This is only a driver, but...

I hope by your response that someone you know has not done themselves injury through following an unsound diet. To give the example of veganism when studies of the North American diet shows you don't have to be a vegan to be undernourished or self-damaging is a red flag. Many people all over the world eat a vegan diet without hurting themselves. It is not my way, but I recognize education and common sense go a long way to ensuring a healthy lifestyle.

That said, everyone has delusions, most are minor, safe and act as a coping mechanism when we feel powerless. Only when a delusion overpowers other aspects of good judgment does it become a problem. At that point, they become disorders and enter an entirely different category.

All I was getting at in regards to delusions are that a) we all have them and b) we all like them. They do serve a purpose, even if they only buy time until you come up with a response to something particularly odious.

I sincerely hope someone you know has not done themselves harm

  4. People love delusions... on Mind Control Delusions and the Web · · Score: 4, Interesting

They are so much easier to deal with than real-life problems. The delusional one sets the context, and whoever controls the context has the control. And delusional people don't give up their delusions easily. As the old song said, "no wise man has the power, to reason away, what a fool believes"

And the internet lets them set up a community of people to support their delusions so their delusion gets reinforcement

  13. Porcine? Of course... on IE8 Beta 2 Fatter Than Firefox and XP · · Score: 4, Insightful

Things, not just MS, have been getting more porcine as computer capacity has increased. This is just a continuation. All that happens is more things are patched onto old programs, they get relabeled as "new", and they use more memory, hard drive space and cpu power. I doubt it will get better, it would seem that all developers do is look at the increased capacity and speed of machines as lebenstraum. There certainly doesn't seem to be any impetus to make more compact, efficient programs

Sounds like most think the Russians has cause (at least to step in some).

As well, the USSR didn't really suffer from any of those effects you describe. They were annoyances, but not a big deal to them. What ended up killing the USSR in the end was rot from within. You can't keep a country going forever when the national sport is alcoholism.

I doubt this will really matter in the end. Especially long term. The Russians will likely leave by the end of the week as soon as the Georgian military is dismantled. In the end, Georgia started this, and really, what effect did the crushing of the Prague spring, the Hungarian uprising of 56 etc really have on relations between the west and Russia?

And as others have pointed out, the Georgians started it with an area of effect attack on a city populated by ethnic Russians. If there is trouble with the ISS, it will be for other reasons.

this is just another attempt to "civilize" the net and it won't be the last. Will it work, probably not, but in the end that's not the point. DRM, the RIAA etc are just the Pinkerton's of the 21st century. Nobody liked them either. This is wrapped up in the cloak of stomping out child porn so it will be implemented without too much opposition. What we know as the "net" won't exist in 10 years, maybe less. Will "hobbyists" lurk in the background, sure, but the vast majority of people using the net will have zero idea of what is under the hood in what they are running in any way shape or form. This is another step in mainstreaming it for them.
