It's further clouded by the fact that some pages that have many references are in fact linked to sources which are also dubious. You see references and can be fooled into thinking they are true, but they just link to random webpages -- probably written by the author of the wp article.
Most wikipedia pages on commercial products, companies, and bands(especially) use a fansite or the official site of the product as their primary sources. Hence, large sections of wikipedia are nothing more than promotional material for bands and commercially available products. There's sentences and links to bands in many, many unrelated wikipedia pages -- if not most pages on the entire site.
The search thing is a real problem. Because of Google's skewed ranking of the site as a whole, a wikipedia page will most often appear higher in search results than that of the primary source any article is linked to. This is not good. Not good at all.
Yes, it does. As well as providing a forum for the minority with an ax to grind to fervently manipulate truth. It's a perfect arena for those who like burning books, and wielding authority.
Does this version have the geotracing thing built-in? If so, I'm not touching it at all. I'm sure as fast as this may be, it would be even faster if they took out some of the "features" like awesomebar and made them into plugins that those who wished them could install.
While some of that is true, there's one important difference here. Gmail does NOT work properly with the new interface. It doesn't load the links for attachments and a few other features. It's broken. Change is one thing, but broken is quite different.
I'm one who has now switched to the.co.uk interface, Gmail is useless for me in the.com one. I only found out about the.co.uk one by reading this article (thanks, submitter).
Aside from that, the tabs on the left hand side is, indeed, stupid. It does totally waste space, as well as being disconcerting -- browser tabs at top, gmail tabs at side. It's better on a widescreen, but on my laptop it's just a waste. There's no point in using this any more.
Yeah, it's nonsense. Very badly designed experiment, and a very small sample. What about people who grew up without TV etc, etc...
I wonder who funds stuff like this? I have lots of projects that would produce just as viable/ludicrous conclusions. Where can I find the golden goose like these guys?
"What's this crap doing on the front page? I know that I can go into my settings and turn it off, but I'm lazy! This shouldn't be on the front page at all!"
You can turn it off the front page, but NOT off the RSS feed. So it's still possible to be inflicted by the Idle crap by accident.
Taco, if you MUST persist with Idle (in the face of mostly displeasure) can you not have it as a totally separate site? It's only fair isn't it? Those who don't want this crap need never see it, and the cast-offs from Digg can go to the new Idle site any time they want. Is this not fair?
Not long. And neither returns great results these days. Just further proof that Google seriously needs competition. Why has it been 10 years since there was any major breakthrough in "search"?
Except... that the Scottish legal system is separate and rulings in English courts do not necessary apply to Scotland, there are also some exceptions for English rulings in Northern Ireland. Thus the use of England is reasonable, though it probably should say England and Wales. In this case, the use of either the UK or Great Britain would be wrong, the summary is mostly correct.
In the UK. We're fine. Most of our data has already been stored in a government hard drive and left on a train seat somewhere, and it's not like we have any money in our bank accounts anyway.
I like the concept, it certainly has its uses. And it's long before time that search had new innovations, for something so intrinsically useful and lucrative, there's been almost no progress in search in a decade.
However, these folks need to hire a graphic designer. That is one ugly, cluttered website. Far, far too much information to look at at one time, daunting to say the least. Google had the right idea with their interface. Less is more.
Nah, it's just been pixellated and made B&W to hide Dick Cheney's winter vacation lodge. It is, after all as hot as Hell there. Makes him feel at home.
Funny... I was looking for the tags box on this just so I could add an idleispants tag.
It seems that there is no tags box on idle. Doubtless this is a reaction to the fear that people will -- rightly -- tag everything as idelispants in (so far) vain protest.
The specifics of this "feature" are irrelevant. Whether its good or bad for individuals should be a choice. This is the point. If this is built-in there's no choice.
Some people like the awesome bar for example, some don't mind it, some -- perhaps many -- dislike it intensely. There is absolutely no need for that, or this tracker, to be built into the browser by default. The add-on functionality is perfect and very useful. Let people choose what they need in a browser and keep the basic browser fast and clean. As it is Firefox 3.0 cannot be used on some older systems. This is wholly unnecessary.
It seems like Mozilla is now intent on adding features rather than having a great stable product.
Why don't we just use a regular microscope on whales and learn their language? Then we could strap cameras on them too and have them explore the oceans for us.
Cameras? No. Frickin laser beams... No... Frickin laser cannons! Forget sharks, whales are the ultimate in seabound laser destructive power. Sure, Japan and Norway would be gone pretty quickly, but... who cares! Whales with frickin laser cannons is the answer.
Excellent post! Please mod up.

Hopefully! It's certainly worth a try.

Hmmm... sock puppetry much? Unbiased summary? Not a chance.

Oh, and sues all too.

Yes. I offer Wikipedia as proof.
In Washington, monkey punches you.
English, instead of Buzzwordish.
... now the RIAA will have operatives dressed as nursing staff to slap cease and desist orders on any brain surgeon who tries to replicate this.

Don't worry, look how successful the Drugs Czar is. Money well spent.

...we've discovered the planet Krypton?
Also, look out for legitimate emails from banks -- they are probably being sent by scammers too.

Idle is, indeed, pants. And nothing but pants.

At least if we gave them frickin laser cannons, they could save themselves. It'd make "Jaws" look like "The Little Mermaid".
