I had no idea Slashdot had 805,747 members in 1998. Wow. And to think, they only gained another 50,000 users before I got a username last year. They really have slowed down.
Today (actually in Japan time, yesterday) is the 20th anniversary of Super Mario Bros. But Mario debuted in the American Donkey Kong arcade game in '81 or so. After that, there was the game in which he and Luigi fought crabs in underground pipes, Mario Bros. The game Super Mario Bros. came much later than either of those.
Of course, Super Mario Bros. did rock socks, so it's worth celebrating on its own. But it's important for us to know what exactly we're celebrating.
Not meaning to troll or anything, it's just an honest question and you can ignore it if you like, but are you a Mormon? The way you phrased your reply reminds me of my old Mormon roommate. I'm curious if my "Mormon-radar" is working or not.
Good call. I forgot about the world being on top of the stack. I thought we were considering a hypothetical universe that consists entirely of stacked turtles, not our normal universe, in which there's a single planet on top of an infinite stack of turtles.
Don't like realism, eh? Then you'll love Wind Waker! It's about a land that was completely flooded because the king trusted the Gods to deliver him from... Oops.
Talking about the Developer Kits breaks an NDA, so nothing you hear about it is reliable, slashdot nick or not. All signing in would do is give Apple an excuse to subpoena slashdot.
Hasn't Nintendo stated multiple times that the Revolution won't use a DS-like controller? Besides, anyone who's played Wario Ware: Twisted knows they're going to do a gyroscope anyway.
After I wrote it, I realized I misworded it. Obviously, those who buy the $1000 value packs are going to get Live. The question is whether other consumers will look at the cost of the value pack and recurring costs of Live and just put off buying a 360 until the indefinite future, when things may be cheaper. The effect of consumers delaying purchasing a 360 may allow Sony and Nintendo to overcome the handicap of releasing their consoles later. I'm just saying that MS has built up some ill will at their price, whereas Nintendo and Sony are building up good will for their systems, since they're presumed to be cheaper.
Of course, all this pre-release speculation is kind of pointless. Remember how lame the original XBox's launch catalog was? But they came back from behind and made a respectable second place finish in the US. (Of course, in Japan... well, I just got back from the store, and while I was there I saw just a third of a rack devoted to Xbox games but a whole rack devoted SNES games, to say nothing of the three racks for the PS2. Heh. The 'Cube had about a rack and a half or so.)
* The rumor is, how Nintendo will work it is, if you're in person, you can just add someone to your friends list directly. Otherwise, you have to enter in some kind of universal unique ID which follows the machine, no matter the IP address. Of course, this is all just rumors and press releases at this point.
* I think they expect people will do that themselves using IM, etc.
* Well, zero payment isn't quite synonymous with single payment, but yeah.
* Have you been paying attention? All the stores like EB and whatnot have been announcing $1000+ XBox 360 "Value Packs."
The announced cost of Nintendo's WiFi internet connection?
$0.00/month
It looks like Nintendo is really lining up to be a price leader in the next generation, even more so than they were in this one. The question is whether consumers will go for it, or think, "Oh, Nintendo, they're just cheap, not any good." It really does seem like Microsoft is getting a lot of negative buzz about the cost of its new consoles and services though. Will it hurt their bottom line? My instinct is that better graphics are fine and all, but not enough to drive console sales by themselves. XBox-PS2-Cube games all look pretty decent. Would looking even better really enhance gameplay for consumers? It's doubtful in my mind. If anything, it would be nice to see the same level of graphical detail, but more character models and maps packed into the game and on screen.
Nintendo's WiFi connection probably won't be nearly as sophisticated as Microsoft's Live. But will consumers who've plunked down $1k for a console really be excited about paying yet another fee every month?...
You're exactly right. IM today is like email in 1993. You can use FidoNet, AOL, CompuServe, Prodigy, or this new fangled "internetwork" of Al Gore's, but there is no universal service. The difference is that the current blockade inter-service is fully self-imposed. In fact, AOL was order by the FTC to open up its service before offering voice or video chat as a condition for merge with Time-Warner, but then the government remembered that AOL is a big corporation, and rules don't apply to them. The only reason that we don't have interservice compatibility is because everyone is trying to hog the market to themselves. The loser here is the consumer. But, maybe, just maybe Google will help usher in a new age of IM interservice standards. Let's hope.
Heh, all the old churches are bleeding members to newer churches, which due to their small size and lack of age have no organ, just a Casio (the bastard son of Moog) and a PA system.
Or worse, they play that devil rock and roll "music" (if you can even call it that). In twenty years, church music may finally move from the 60's to the 80's, meaning no more Peter, Paul, and Mary-esque "As the Deer," just Kraftwerk-esque "Tour du Heaven."
when i played army as a young kid and would pretend shoot all my friends
The solution is clear:
Destroy all sticks and cut off all index fingers, so that there's nothing children can use as play guns. Once children are physically unable to point things at each other and say, "You're dead," all war, crime, and violence in the world will disappear. Also, we'll all get ice cream!
Hmm. Little boys might still be able to point their weewees at stuff. Might need to cut those off too, just to be safe.
That doesn't work for me for some folders. I'm not sure, but I think the connection is system owned folders versus user owned. At any rate, my attempts to exclude the/tmp/ folder from Spotlight are routinely foiled. But isn't that folder supposed to be excluded automatically anyway? Why do I get iTunes temp files in my results? I've tried flushing my index, and I'm on a clean install-- what's the deal?
In Japan, Yahoo BroadBand offers free calls to other Yahoo customers by plugging your phone into your router. The rates to call America are also staggeringly cheap (¥4/minute if memory serves). Yahoo has had this technology for a while, at least two years by my reckoning. It's good that they're going to use it elsewhere though, I guess.
It's cool; I figured it was a substitution, but I couldn't guess for what. My one thought was Nintendogs, but you don't have that Stateside quite yet. My girlfriend is also addicted Zoo Keeper though, so I know how that is.
9) Battery life is a non-issue. My girlfriend managed to kill it playing animal crossing for 4 hours or so after not charging for a couple of days. It was the first time that's been done to it.
What are you talking about? Animal Crossing isn't out yet, even in Japan.

Yes, but most people say fuck rather than f*ck. I mean, it's slashdot fer f*ck's sake.

Is that a tribute to the Mighty Mightor, Zonk?
Com'mon man, your job is to be able to spell words like submitter. It ain't that hard.
And goodbye karma, but it's the truth!

Each crushed turtle corresponds to a negative integer. Each uncrushed turtle corresponds to a positive integer. Simple!
'Nuff said.
Don't like realism, eh? Then you'll love Wind Waker! It's about a land that was completely flooded because the king trusted the Gods to deliver him from... Oops.
There's no reason both can't be infinite.

We'll see.
A) Win2k is built on WinNT, which was developed completely separate from the DOS line. XP was based on 2k. The last DOS based OS was WinMe.
B) Windows sucks. One of the reason for this is legacy cruft. (This was the point the original poster was getting at, but you seem to have missed it.)
Don't worry, all the terrorists are on fark, photoshopping pictures of Bush.
I wish I had saved mod points today.

Props for the 2 Stupid Dogs quote, yo.
