it is going to be tougher to sell ring tones in the future. people start to look for low quality MP3s and this kind of files you can download from any place including your own PC/Linux/Win32 - check this link picasso11.jpg
if you clicked that file you downloaded cached data from one of the public folders on one of the HTTP servers connected to the public reverse proxy. check the speed - file is 700K size
talking about ring tone to the cell phone - run goMyPlace daemon on your Mac/Linux/Win32 and access your 320 kbits MP3s at flat rate of Internet access. Open Source (GPL) including server side code
completely unrelated - my reverse proxy project is a nice mobile application, access your file from any browser, even text only, like lynx. PDA without Java ? great goMyPlace will work there too.
...sorry for multiple responses, but it is very seldom when i get feedback. goMyPlace is much more than just data distribution system. It is remote access system, which allows many things, including access to the remote host command shell via regular internet browser (no Java plugin is required). The hash based cache on reversed proxy is absolutely unique as far as i know. Public reversed proxys protecting sensitive HTTP servers is another relatively fresh idea.
...i mean there is an HTTP server behind this, but i could turn it OFF and the link would work, besides check the speed and file size. this is proxy server upstream, not my pitty ADSL picasso.11
gaim does the trick of interconnecting Yahoo/ICQ/MSN for any platform
the problem as i see it, that for open source project without financing it is almost impossible to get any attention. PR campaigns cost money. that links at top of the page cost gold.
i struggle with one of my pet projects, which allows to send large e-mail attachments (among other things) - for example, this is a static URL to one of the "public" files picasso.11. This is Open Source (GPL), zero financing. and you can help me and many fuuter users to make the product better. Will that click cost you lot of time ? there is no ads on the web site, nothing. but people simply fail to do this. when you look for the product why not to add to the google search words "Open Source" or "sourceforge"
...and my Open Source project which allows to do the same - send large e-mail attachments (and much more) will apparently never cross even 10 uesrs mark, but you can help by particpating in proxy server testing - download a file from proxy picasso.11
...and sending feedback to me. any comments/remarks are appreciated
btw "Pando is free software that lets you send and receive files and folders of any size* with your existing email account" Windows and MAC
goMyPlace will do the same on any platform and this is open source (GPL) and "No adware, no spyware... no, really" you can check the source code, which arrives in the installation package
it is rather hard to enforce. reversed proxy like gomyplace can be ran anywhere in the world. server hidden behind the proxy can serve HTML pages even if dynamic IP/hostile coutry/etc.
same story in Israel. no letters, though (this is middle east here, we are less civilized so to speak). i discovered rate increase from my credit card monthly report. long story short - i called the provider and in two hours got one month for free and the same deal as i had before.
another story is my relative in CA. he had to switch from cable to DSL, because cable provider (Comcast ?) insisted that they do not give bargain deals in first 0.5 year. this is a companys policy to give bargains only to new customers. so he had to switch. but indeed he has option to switch and so do i. in many places in the US you are out of luck.
if this is HTTP server check gomyplace.com completely open source (GPL) reversed proxy allowing you to serve HTML pages (or any other content) without having static IP and accepting incoming connections. Public proxy works according "all you can eat" system.
and 12 miles is not a problem really. i participated in the creating of device which bundles E1s and Ethernet links over twisted pairs. the problem is solvable and it is not much more expensive than your regular ADSL.
the problem is that providers simply do not care about small cities. they need earnings first. why to try to gain that 0.1% if there is a war over 10%. when the larger markets reach saturation they will have no choise but try to serve smaller markets
i read that in Canada there is a non-profit organisation which buy/rent point-to-point fiber links and deploy WiFi. their goal - broadband Internet access to every house in Canada (and Canada is a large country with little of population). consider establishing of such company in your city. call it Internet fan club or something.
try to get broadcom data sheet. you can get one - encrypted PDF with personal signature. you can't run search in the doc, you can't copy name of the hardware register from PDF to the code/e-mail. you are completely screwed. every time you send a file to coworker you have to find that password and send along. and all this assuming that you ARE a customer of broadcom.
similar story with any vxWorks (commercial real-time system) docs. i suspect that WRS deliberately hunts all message boards/servers keeping any information/comments related to the OS.
another example is WinCE from MS. try to find any negative comment about the OS on the NET.
you can listen (and buy) only 24 hours of songs/day. means there is a theoretical limit to how many songs you are willing to buy, no matter what the price is.
we talked about Rodi and you mentioned that you see IP address of the remote server

unfortunately i do NOT use any of SCO products.
check this article http://p2pnet.net/story/9103

the link i posted is actually link to the cached file
the problem as i see it, that for open source project without financing it is almost impossible to get any attention. PR campaigns cost money. that links at top of the page cost gold.

for example, this pando thing for delivering large e-mail attachments. goMyPlace does this simpler, for example this link picasso.11
and goMyPlace is GPLed both server (reversed proxy server) and client side
goMyPlace will do the same on any platform and this is open source (GPL) and "No adware, no spyware ... no, really" you can check the source code, which arrives in the installation package
but you will probably like public reversed proxy technology tested on the web site or check this linkB 92F729B6C3A616482CD1D029355A87DD5C:/home/arkady/go myplace.49.com/paintings

to participate in gomyplace alpha testing of the proxy

want to buy "gomyporn.com" domain name ?

what kind of services we are talking about ?

Example: ADSL modem
see something similar https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/2134/
you need thick wire to charge regular 5A/hour battery in second(s)
on my table i have 1F (3.5V) capacitor. size of half of human finger. no nanotubes technology there though. i think some organic

goMyPlace is a remote access software with a couple of interesting twists.
remote access to the file system which does not require Java on the client side. just an internet browser. Lynx is fine (see this screenshot http://gomyplace.com/images/goMyplace_file_browser _lynx_admin_Ubuntu.png)
Smart SHA-1 based caching on the reversed proxy of the binary data and HTML files in the public folders
remote access to the system command shell with simple Java Script page
All URL's are static and can be posted on the message boards and used in e-mails
i use gomyplace to move files in my own LAN. in many cases this is simpler than struggling with samba and openning NETBios.
this is an interesting test - try to download a file from this list http://208.109.20.145/j4jJxRKd/redhat/?hash=EA2DCB 92F729B6C3A616482CD1D029355A87DD5C:/home/arkady/go myplace.49.com/paintings
