I get the feeling that this is doomed to failure. The capacity isn't ground-breaking and its only selling point seems to be that it is anti-consumer! No technical details on how it prevents "illegal" copying, but I suspect that it'll just be more encryption.
Online journalism may be adolescent and chaotic, but it is freer, more diverse and participatory than its offline predecessors. And a hell of a lot more fun and interesting.
I agree with this idea; I think that its a great description of the current situation in journalism. I think people don't even realize how much they are tied to "closed" media just because they always have been. Many critics dismiss online journalism as being unreliable and adolescent, but how often do these people make critical decisions solely based on what they read in the local paper?
I hate to reply to my own post, but I'd just like to point out that Moderators have wasted 10 points so far on my stupid little trolling post above.
Why would anyone care to moderate a post that much in relation to a Movie Review? I don't think that moderation in the current form works.
I think that a 2-level system where a post is either at 0 or 1 would be a more appropriate filter. Flamebait, trolls, and the like will surely fall to 0, and all non-offensive, relevant posts would be treated equally.
This just seems to be a logical realm for Linux. The OS (not just for appliances either) should not be the focus, the Aps should. How often does Windows get in the way of doing something useful? It carries too much baggage due to M$'s "Three sizes cover everything" mentality.
No kidding, what is more damaging: A movie made freely available on the internet before or after it has made its money at the box-office?
I don't see pirated DVD's as such a big threat in any light. Unlike CDs and MP3s, there is a great system in place where I can rent a movie for a very reasonable price. I don't want to waste my bandwidth downloading a movie (even when I get a high speed connection) when I can go down to the local video store, say hi to some people, pay my two dollars and enjoy!
Although I haven't seen this movie, I recently read a review in Time that made a pretty good case for it being the worst movie in living memory! I don't think that there is any anti-$cientology intent with this article, that's just a convenient connection to make in this case.
I think the problem is that there is no way an editorial letter in the local newspaper would get the kid sent to juvenile detention. How often do people get sent to jail for libel for something as immature and assinine as name calling?
I like paper too, but King's not a good example though. King himself stated that he made much more off that 67 page story than he could have via traditional methods (eg. magazine, collection, novella). Just because it was cracked doesn't mean he will never make another cent off it either.
I don't think that publishing exclusivly in digital format is the best way, but you may reach new audiences (even if some don't pay). I agree with the sentiment that you shouldn't limit your means of distribution.
I don't think people are being naive when it comes to an open letter. The intent wasn't really to change minds at microsoft, but to "rally the troops". There are some folks out there that have a better idea of how MS operates now.
The open letter is precisely what triggers the type of letter-writing campaign you describe.
In addition, the mainstream media gets ideas like this into their heads and every review of OSS ends up being "...foobar for is great, but the interface isn't as good as foobar for windows". But when they say that, they really mean "The programmer didn't copy the feel of Windows perfectly."
Personally, I don't think that Windows is all that great of an interface. It employs terribly mixed metaphors and is really not suited for many types of displays (read: NOT PDA's).
I think that Collector's Editions are a great idea, but there are a lot of older games that would benefit from this type of release much more. No, I don't mean creating 3D versions of Pong, Pacman, or Frogger.
I don't know what sort of content will prove to make a cool edition for a game, but creator's notes, original concepts, early art, etc... might just be worth picking up a 'new' Zork, etc...

I get what your saying... but I don't think Sun is any less evil than M$, just less successful at herding the sheep lately.
This may very well end up as a good language, but will we be able to take the marketing blitz and spin that will come with it?

actually 1 CD = 74 minutes of music = 650 MB

Okay, enough ranting.
Hmmm... sounds an awful lot like a certain feature writer here at /.
IMHO, there is no need for a word processor to require a PIII or Athlon ;-)
NT (aka 2000), 98/95, WinCe

I think it's more of a case of not knowing the important stuff ;)
oh yeah... NT has been doing USB for years!!!
At least sloppy code should result in predictable and repetetive errors. Mixups like these occur due to human error, bad data entry, etc...
No, put it in front of M$ Headquarters!
Should we be worried if NASA starts placing large orders?
You'll be missed. We need more people at /. to tell us sheep how it really is. Man, we really do suck for having some fun with a bad move.

Remember, if you want to listen to "your" music in different rooms... you had just better go out and buy 2 CDs. l
But really, somehow I think there are strong interests with deep pockets that think the DCMA takes priority over that silly Bill of Rights.
