There is a huge body of work out there written for DOS. Most of it is forgotten crap, but there are some good programs too. It makes more sense to emulate DOS than waste resources reinventing every bit of useful code written for DOS.
If you like Scream fine but could someone please mention why this was posted and say not perhaps various political news?
I'll take a stab at that. The ultimate goal of a site like/. is to provoke discussion. Thanks to the hundreds of posters who have have taken the time to post a message like "Why is this News for Nerds?" every time they aren't interested in the topic, these posts seem to generate just as much discussion as more on-topic posts.
If people would save their comments for the posts that they are interested in and have something to say, then the powers that be would be much more likely to notice. Hey, that last Katz movie review only had 3 comments... lets not bother with the next one.
It seems to me that there is room for/. to be different things to different people. I don't have to be interested in every story and it doesn't have to cover everything I want it to. It doesn't owe me anything.
I agreed with you at first glance that there isn't anything wrong with fundamentalists getting something on the ballot.
But I think that the whole point was that No one should be allowed to take advantage of an unknowing and/or apathetic voting audience to put an item that is in violation of the first amendment on the ballot.
I'm pleased with the community's response in this case and I hope that their action is indicative of what will occur in other areas.
Yes, I have Licensed software from both ATI and Creative Labs. I don't know how much more money the MPAA thinks that they have a right to get from me -lalas
Your DSS analogy is not completely correct. I have purchased all the necessary hardware for viewing DVDs. I purchased a drive with a MPEG Decoder card and I have a small collection of legally purchased DVDs. Isn't that all that should be required of me?
Apparently not, because now the MPAA says that I must only use software that they license to view the DVDs. OK, I'll accept that...point me in the direction of the Linux software. Oh, there is only an ILLEGAL piece of software that will help me out. So what are my options?
The MPAA has sent a clear message to me that in addition to my drive, mpeg card, and DVDs, I must also spend $100 + on Windows.
I agree that no one forced me into this situation. I did play my DVD's in windows originally, but I did this because I believed that I would soon be able to play them in Linux. I feel that the MPAA has not only locked out a potential market with their actions, but has damaged the Linux community with their accusations about the use of DeCSS.
Playstation II is far from the only product SONY is betting on. Their presence in the home entertainment industry is pretty solid. I also doubt that the PSX2 will be a failure, as it should be backwards compatable, double as a DVD player, etc... This type of integration may prove to be the future of consumer electronics.
IANAL, but I don't think that your phone number and address are yours to copyright, although maybe there could be an exception if they are lumped together in a package (Name && Address && Phone number).
AMD doesn't have the luxury of being able to throw away (x86 ISA) whatever it wants to. They are competing with Intel for the PC market. The G4 is a lock to appear in new Macs.

just my 2 cents

I don't think that this is going to replace too many desktops, but it will get people on the web that wouldn't be otherwise.
They should be looking at expanding markets, not worrying about whose markets they can grab.
