My HelpDesk supports a user base of 5,000 with 300+ installed applications, and we wouldn't get 5-10 / minute. Yikes.

I'm originally from Waterloo, Ontario, where RIM is located. They've grown at an incredible rate in recent years, but not in an "we'll eat your soul" kind of way. They've reinvested strongly in the community, and have donated a TON of cash to charity and other ventures. For example, the founder of RIM donated $100M to found The Perimeter Institute, a theoretical physics center where researchers and eggheads can basically sit around and think about cool stuff without worrying about budgetary or governmental pressures. A lot of what I see from RIM reminds me very much of Google. Become an industry leader, and STAY an industry leader for the right reasons. This story makes me somewhat sad, as the company suing them appears to have been "created" specifically for this reason, and they don't actually create anything that benefits anyone, except lawsuits that benefit themselves.
Perimeter Institute can be found here:

If you're ever in Waterloo, I suggest you check it out. One of the coolest buildings I've ever seen.

  10. Re:Well .. on Laptops Outsell Desktops · · Score: 2, Interesting

My company has started replacing laptops with desktops, as we've found (a) the laptops get destroyed far too frequently, and (b) the laptops were going home with users, but not for work purposes. Therefore, chain a desktop to their desk, and far fewer hardware repairs needed, plus no teenagers at home playing Doom or one-handed surfing on company hardware. I doubt this stat is accurate based on my experience, and the reasons stated by other posters.

I think, my frustration stems more from a feeling of , "if you have the cash, you can do cool shit. therefore, it's not cool to do shit just because you have mad cash". I LOVED Rick Hansen when he wheeled himself around the world, but Steve Fosset? Please. Gimme a strong pot o' coffee and his resources and I'll complete that flight, too (and I wouldn't expect the world to throw me a party).

  12. I feel...nothing on GlobalFlyer Completes Record-Breaking Flight · · Score: 4, Interesting

I don't know, maybe I'm jaded, but these "record breaking" feats just don't seem to capture my attention or imagination. I have to think it would have been so exciting to have lived, say, a hundred years ago when these things were garnering world-wide attention and people like Lindberg became heroes. But nowadays, for whatever, reason... nothing. Nada. Zilch. Somewhat disappointed that I can't seem to get into this. Anyone else feel the same?

  13. Guns guns and more guns on Grand Theft Auto Led Teen to Kill · · Score: 2, Insightful

I saw an interview with Stephen King once, and they asked him why America was so violent (referring to his books being a possible influence). His response? "The world in general has the same access to the same books, same video games, and same movies/television as America. The ONLY difference in our culture compared to other cultures is the rampant proliferation of firearms". America seems to have this fascination with being afraid and arming themeselves to the teeth, and every once in a while some whack-job puts that attitude and those weapons to use in your local neighbourhood.
