But still where's the market none the less...

Linux also has a foot in the door on embedded. I don't see how this is anything but a geek play thing at top's.

Alright, disclaimer here. Normally I don't bother to comment on any offbeat anymore but i got something to ask...

What is the target market for this product?

Lets face it.. BeOS or Zeta (doesn't really matter what you call it) can not be a mainstream desktop OS. Just like Linux it faces the same problems, plus some. No Games, migration factors, software software software?? You could port alot of linux software to the OS. But what?s the point.

You offer all Linux software on BeOS it could be another anti-Linux migration barrier. (Although portable code aside.) For general user base, its to confusing. (That sounds a little lame i know.)

A quote from Futurama stuck in my head after that thought: "Your average voter is still as drunk and stupid as they were in 1980". Well... your average joe six pack user is just as drunk and stupid as they are in windows.

Also, where's even a niche market for this product??? Its not like the BSD's which have great server and datacenter applications. Hell, even OS/2 survives on SOME ATM machines. Where's the niche? or even market?

The only useful thing I could see this is for... is a ultra secure webserver at tops. (Security through obscurity). But mostly as a novelty for uber geeks.

In the end this will mean nothing or be a confusion point for joe six pack user looking to switch from windows.

The tinfoil hat arugument got the better of me... but I guess another way to say it is.. Over reliance on the tech and not the driving. Tech is causeing to many problems with the drivers. Now more than ever if they don't see a CHECK ENGINE light. They think nothing is wrong. "OnStar didn't say i have a problem"... kind of thinking that will cause the problems. I also have a 95 Interpid and I hate the thing, you talk about spark plug advance. Well I can't set the timing in the Interpid. It's computer controllered. That's my point. *Slightly Off-Topic* I do think automatic transmissions are a bad idea.... for example... how many morons will be talking on there phones checking there hair in the mirror when they have to shift. Manual requires much more attection not only to shifts but feet too and the road! I'd think you'd see a huge decrease in the things that really piss off good drivers today if you take half the tech out of the cars. NO CELL PHONES, NO in dash computer/DVD entertainment system, NO doing a make-over while driving on the interstate. OnStar is a MONEY MAKER and Bullshit all rolled into one. -Digital Madman (PS: I do take pride in working with my firebirds, and do most of the work myself. I may not pump the fuel into the carb... but that was not my point anyways. Making the car RUN better is okay. Enough tech for the driver. Remember the driver has to drive.)

Okay this is getting out of hand here. I HATE modern cars (I'm 22). For many reasons. Every feature added to cars now a days decreases the ability for younger kids to acutally DRIVE! I know people that can't back their car up with out a backup display screen and warning sensor. I know a woman that can't change lanes with out her on board display screen in her Lincoln.

With all these "features" it takes away from the driving, now adays.. kids get into the car an expect it to do everything for them. Power this, ABS that, self detecting OnStar. Its all bull.

Pretty soon, this generation learning to drive won't be able to get behind the wheel of an older car (read pre-1990). If it does not have ABS...How do i stop?? Whats that? I can't tailgate and wham the brakes at the last second?!?!?!?!

I beleive in the older cars being better. Easy to fix, built more soild, and you had to acutally drive them. Put down the cell phone and built in computer entertainment center and DRIVE!!!

This OnStar is not only a bad idea for future drivers...but its a MONEY MAKER for the auto makers. Hmmm...looks like you got a problem... better take it to the dealership and get that fixed.

Ten to one... it'll never be a warrenty part either.

This is all pointless BS that will jack the price of the car up 2000 bucks, distract drivers more, and cause a loss of skill in driving. Not to mention garage bills will be 5x that of a non-OnStar checking car.

I'll now put away the tinfoil hat...

  10. Are these cars even safe? on Software Glitches Stall Toyota Prius · · Score: 1, Interesting

Well... here i go. After i read these articles, I'm gald i choose to drive "real" cars. I drive an 87' V8 5liter Formula 350 Firebird, 4bbl carb. (Yes.. I pass everything but a gas station...I hear that all the time.) This car has power nothing (except windows), No power ABS, no airbags, and the only power steering it has is the bio-electric carbon based huminoid unit behind the wheel. The pedals have linkage... teh brake is a pressure system. This car, IMHO, is safer than anything sold today. Now most people get scared when you put the letter V next to number 8 now a days (gas prices), and its a vaild point. If i floor it.. i can see the gas needle move... I'm not kidding... But something most people do not relaize is that this car is made of METAL. I was hit by a honda accord... and i got a scrach in the paint... not even a dent. The honda lost its rear bumber, quarter panel, and the trunk lid needed to be replaced. 2 grand in repairs... i bought a 4 dollar bottle of scrach remover at walmart. Thats saftey feature one... Saftey feature two... One day at an intersection... a truck lost its brakes... coming down a hill, right at me and a few other cars... i noticed right away and slamed it... he impacted a few imports, while i was waiting at the next light (i had to run that light after all... but hey...I'm not dead). The imports tryed to move out of the way... but the little 2 liter or less 4 cylinder engines couldn't even start to move fast enough. I view 4 bangers as a Saftey risk!... Most of the those little engines can't get the revs up fast enough in an emergency... Safety feature 3.... Theres no computer... I can work on my car... i can look at the engine an tell you what it does with out a expensive diag. copmuter. I'm 21, and can tune a carb. Most 21 year olds are loading "fart pipes" on there hondas trying to make them "high performance". (As a side note, i go around all night messing with kids and there little rice rockets... showing them the meaning of power....lol). In my car at least, I know that a "computer" would shut the engine off at random... or other. Of course new cars have one advantage to my old power house. In northern new england winters.... they acutally start with one turn of the key. Anyone who's tryed to start a 4bbl carb V8 engone in 3 degree weather... pump pump pump...turn... enigne slowly death cranks.... repeat proceedure, knows how that feels. But even in a blizzard I drive my Firebird... so the argument that theese cars suck in winter is wrong. I had to learn to to drive it in winter, and even on the interstate just fine... sure... its a little fun to what your friends freak out when the back end starts sliding... but if you know what you are driving... its just another quirk of rear wheel drive. So to end my rant, I find these new cars unsafe. Engines are too small, the things fall apart on impact... and I see these hybrids as even worse... what if you need to move suddenly from a stop in an emergency... how fast does the engine come on... and transfer power... I'd think it'd be even longer than it takes for a 4 banger to get moving. So for me... I'll stick to my old sports cars. It sure isn't fuel "sipping"... but i feel a whole lot safer. -DM
