Actually, you really should know what you are talking about before you make bold statements. Avalon - NOT the shiny new interface, is the new display subsystem. It handles the layout of windows forms and such. It also has NO knowledge of XML. XAML - A declarative programming language based off of XML. It allows you to instantiate objects using XML. Such as - would instantiate a Hello object and set its Color to blue. Aero - The new shiny interface system. This is actually what makes things pretty and is built off of DirectX. This also has no knowledge of XML or XAML. But this is slashdot, so I should expect geeks to talk out of there arse before knowing what they are talking about! :-)

I agree with you. Except they still do have a choice. Microsoft isn't saying that you "can't" develop with VB6. I have the cds still if you want em :-) They are just not supporting it. Even on the big projects, how many times do you call support on your dev platform? Especially one as mature as VB6? Plus there is still a community behind it as far as I can see. I don't know. I guess if you want to stick with VB6 the option is still there. Microsoft is just trying to say "move on."

Let me put it this way. Just because there is a "Market" for something, doesn't mean that you should sell and support a product in that market. The market might be really small.

You know what? .NET has been around since 2000. That's 5 years. Get with the times.

Too many lazy ass developers if you ask me. .NET is significantly better than VB6 in ALL aspects. That is development, testing, deployment, etc... It even has the drag & drop coding style!

I wrote a large application in VB.NET this past summer that is being used by NASA today to calculate various risks associated with shuttle launches. I hate VB and hope to never touch it again, but VB.NET is very powerful due to the .NET Framework behind it.

Enough ranting. This whole thing is getting old. I mean, they are Microsoft MVPs! You think they would be able to learn a new technology.

This is like all the assembler programmers out there - not wanting to learn a language like C++ because assembler is soooo much more powerful :-)

(BTW - Assembler does have its place, I was just trying to make a point).

While I disagree with him, why would it be a problem if he was arguing with a Firefox developer?

I mean, if it is a Firefox developer - he is probably going to be quite biased towards how "awesome" Firefox is and say anything necessary to believe him.

I mean, if you contribute a lot of time to a project and someone says something not particularly positive - which stance are you going to take? Offensive, or defensive?

This comment is utterly ridiculous. Just because "you" wouldn't pay a subscription, doesn't mean others won't. Hell, WoW has $800,000 copies sold! Tell me that isn't a fairly large market. Let's say 200,000 are active subscribers at 15 a month - that is 1.5M per month in revenue! I subscribe to WoW and find the subscription model very good for the money. I spend 50 bucks on an Xbox or PS2 game only to receive max 50 hours enjoyment out of it. Plus, it is never upgraded (on xbox live, there are exceptions). To each his own, but I think there is tons of potential in the subscription market if the game is *good* - which is key. There are a lot of MMOs out there that just plain suck.

But you said it yourself - it is unmanaged code. To be more specific - a user must use the unsafe keyword in C#. The code is then compiled to a non-verifiable code block. This is not run within .NET's security system. If you are talking about interop with unmanaged code - well, yes, then you are calling C or C++ and hence, it is not secure. Please, don't contradict yourself. All he said was that C# was secure when used (not mixed with C & C++). And it is very secure, I know from experience.
