No, Microsoft has clearly stated that this beta is for developers. They have delivered much of the new API functionality for developers in this release so we can get started testing code on the platform and learning the new technologies.

There are many new technologies in Vista for developers to use.

As far as the games - these run fine under Windows 2003. You just need to enable full video acceleration.

To do this right click on the desktop and go to "Display Properties". Then go to the Settings tab and hit Advanced. Then go to the Troubleshoot tab and move the slider all the way to "Full Acceleration".

    This will solver your troubles.

Microsoft automatically disables full 3D acceleration for a server operating system - which makes sense.

Also remember to enable the Microsoft Audio service by going into your services panel. Otherwise all sound is disabled.

You are right. But in the past the majority of work done was copyrighted not by its authors - but by the corporations they work for. So if anyone was going to benefit from mis-use of the copyright it wasn't a combination of all the employees. Instead, it would be a single entity - the corporation.

The real issue is how do we split up copyright protection to multiple entities instead of a single entity - and is it even feasible to do so?

Let's say one guy contributes 5 lines, another 30 lines, and the last 15 lines. How do you split up the copyright between them? Based on number of source code lines? Complexity of code? I mean this is really hard if not impossible.

Personally I don't mind paying for software. I work very hard, and make a good amount of money as a software engineer. The cost of Microsoft's software isn't really a factor considering that I use it for a couple hours (non-work) every day. The price spread over time is much cheaper than cable, or pretty much any service for that matter.

Especially when it is good software. Microsoft's software is a familiar environment that I can get stuff done fast in. I have installed just about every major Linux distribution out there. They are getting much better. But they just don't fit my needs. I spend too much time configuring and playing with the system. Then I realize all the work I *could* have been getting done in that time :-)

So I am not bashing Linux, and not screaming Microsoft is great. I just think that paying for software isn't such a bad thing!

What you will find is that this is a bunch of BS. They took advantage of the new features in the .NET Framework 2.0 - which will be standardized in the CLI. .NET 2.0 isn't even out by Microsoft yet - so of course Mono isn't going to support it. But Mono is planning on eventually having full support for .NET 2.0. So it will work. Wait till 1.0 - everything will be working then.

I am not saying it is better than or as good as Linux, just that everyone seems a little biased. It is really unfair to blame the entire company's judgement for flaws in their software. There are many really good software devs at Microsoft. Same thing goes for open source. There are lots of flaws in open source software. But they are often fixed by people who know what they are doing. Should we call all open source developers a bad judgement of flawed software? Definately not.

It is about user customizable content, broadband connected games, consistent experience around games, and a common development platform for both Windows and Xbox. I just think the name was a really bad one. They shouldn't have called it the HD era because that is misleading. However, full HDTV support really is a good thing too :-)
