  1. whether or not the license says it... on GPL 3 to Take Hard Line on DRM · · Score: 4, Insightful

...you cannot have drm in oss, it just is not possible. if your software can render it, which involves processing the drm (decrypt, etc) then you can remove the drm pretty much just as easily and since the rendering code is there for everyone to see, the is trivial to adjust the app to play to disk.

is it just me, or does the sony thing seem overblown?

yes it was stupid and hide files from the user.

however a malicious user would still need to drop files on the machine first.. and if they can drop files on your machine, they could just as easily install a rootkit like sony's.

i think DRM and Personal Computer Security are distinctly different.

You forgot these pros for .NET
    - can write in any of at least 50 languages including VB
    - dev environments that accountants can figure out
    - value types
    - a well organized api
    - extensive active progress, .NET 2.0 was a huge step, wonderful tools like linq comming down the pipe

i am not saying it is superior, but you seem to present an extremely shallow view of what .NET offers

  5. There is a few problems with it on Webhost Sues Google · · Score: 0

AdWords is apparently a fairly messy jumble of c++ code, and there are some problems with it.

the main thing i have heard is from the OTHER perspective, people with adwords on their site getting cut off for "fraudulent" clicks, losing as much as 1,2,3k because too many clicks were made from the same ip address.

so bottom line is, if you want to cut off a website's adwords revenue, just make a quick bot to cut them off!

the first word in the article is "US" however the comment line makes it seem like it is a global phenomenon. I do a lot of work onsite for law firms and financial institutions in canada, these people are probably in the "more wealthy category" but they tend to use Msn way more than Google. Though the "net savvy" part (in canada) seems to be accurate from my experience.

this article is terrible, it raises a lot of confusion and muddles the waters...

first of all XUL and XAML have nothing to do with this, they are both application layout languages, not data field and validation languages, why the auther mentioned them, i don't know, IMHO they are both great, and have nothing to do with the W3C (beyond that they are built on top of XML) they are not web standards, and no one is trying to claim they are as such.

The arguments the involved parties have are very logical:

application developers aka "XML Purists" : (IBM, SUN, NOVELL, etc)
Want the cleanest, best solution for their big clients that are tired of shitty javascript forms, they want it to work seamlessley with other XML applications in a big friendly XML web service world.

active browser makers aka "if it works, don't fix it" (opera, mozilla, apple)
are afraid of spending time/money/effort into technologies that aren't adopted, they are more than happy with HTML+Javascript for forms, since it "works" and no one has to do any work that possibly will never get used, thus they back WebForms which is more of the same...

    microsoft
i truly believe microsoft has no interest in developing a web browser anymore, they took up the torch because they saw what everyone saw around 10 years ago - web browsers (netscape) sucked horribly, they brought about a new world to the web with IE, but its time as passed, and i think everyone will be happy when it dies, even microsoft - so i don't think they really care what form technology gets adopted, as long as they don't have to pay more IE developers.
