  1. Peace Corp on High Tech in Africa: Geeks Needed · · Score: 3

I was actually thinking about this a few weeks ago. I got the idea in my head that I might want to join the peace corp, but when I did some research, it seemed like all they were doing was teaching people how to build lakes and fish more efficiently. Not that they arn't useful skills, but it's not where my strength lies. I would jump at the chance to go and help with computer related endevors. Perhaps the Peace Corp could work this out? I'd love the experience.

I don't know you, but if I was to guess from your post, you've never discovered a cool trick, or a neat hack from playing with code. While this hack might not be the most profitable in the long run, I don't see a reason to say that it should not have happend, and that the kernel developers who did it should have kept their noses to the grind stone. Maybe I'm all by myself on this one, but I don't mind targeted advertising. I realize that it can have some really bad results when used incorrectly, but so can nuclear power, and I support that too.

The convenience of being presented with ads that interest me outweigh the threat that someone will find out what shows I watch, and what times. I know it's alot more involved than that, but for me personally I think it's not a bad thing. I remember buying Computer Shopper back when it was 1/3 of a tree, and I didn't get it for the articles.

I agree it isn't a good thing for everyone, but from my view, it's not the big-brother-fear-inducing move that it might be viewed as. Save that fear for what deserves it.

I don't think the problem is really that it's coming from Microsoft. The problem is that it alters a webpage from the way it's author intended it. I've written some nice HTML before, and I've been very proud of the way it looked. I don't want some CLIENT altering the look of it. Especially if it's altering (or providing alternatives to the presented data).

I can just imagine going to consumer reports, and reading a bad review of something a Microsoft company produced, and being presented with a link to a more favorable report. It's just not kosher.

I have to say that I support these guys, and I feel for them. I, too, have been kicked out of a MS party for handing out free software.

A group of friends and I (about 12 of us total) made sure we got invited to the Win2k release party in Columbus, OH. Once our invites were secure, I got in touch with some people that work at cheapbytes.com (awesome place) and overnighted a 100 CD spindle for a very nice discount (I think I explained what they were for).

We walked into the expo center, scooped up all the free "gifts" we could, ate lunch on Microsoft, then proceeded to the AntiPiracy booth (don't think irony was lost on us...how can you pirate Freesoftware?), stacked the CDs up, and watched them fly. We were happy to explain to anyone who asked what they were there for, what Linux was, and in general promote the use of the OS. For a little while. Then, the Microsoftie lady came over and proceeded to escourt us out of there. We could have resisted, but we didn't.

I've often wondered about that day. What happened to all the discs we handed out...were they in use, are they coasters? What would have happened if we would have fought back, and made a scene? We wern't too keen on the idea of a lawsuit, but I just wonder. All in all I enjoyed the party...I even got a nifty Magic-Motion card out of it.

  10. Re:What about MSN? on AOL 6.0 Bundled with Windows XP? · · Score: 2
It's a verrry bad move for AOL, because in doing so they are exposing themselves to the "I hate XP and therefore I hate AOL" mentality. Childish if you ask me, but then we're talking about the general public.

Really, though, when you think about it...what group of people are most likely to say "I hate XP"? Now, isn't that the group most likely not to use AOL in the first place?

Conversly, arn't the people that are most likely to roll over and take what Microsoft gives them also more likely to just accept that AOL is part of their "computer experience".

I'm not necessarily calling the average computer user stupid, just...inexperienced. Nieve is more like it. They don't know any better, so they get taken advantage of by computer companies. Microsoft and AOL arn't the only ones, but they are the biggest.

So is it a bad move by AOL? Probably not. AOL has proved that it doesn't value customer retention half as much as it values new customers. If it did, we wouldn't use AOL CDs like Legos. By the time these users "graduate" to MSN, there will be a whole new set of nieve users to fill their coffers.

I'm not a GNU zealot, or generally outspoken in the Freesoftware movement. I use Linux almost exclusivly, and urge others to at least try it. I say this only so you know my background, and that I'm not a zealot OR biggot.

I'm really against this. Free Software should be just that. Free. If I get a piece of free software, I expect the source code to be there, so I can go through, and change things to work better for me. I also expect the ability to change it enough to run on my systems.

Maybe I'm wrong, and expecting too much. Maybe I, as an end user, shouldn't expect this kind of freedom, but if something's labeled as free software, this is what I expect. A license that says I can modify it, and use it to suit my needs.

In my opinion, free software should not be restricted by what you use it in conjunction with. If I want to port vi to BeOS, I should be allowed to. And if you think that this is going to start and stop with Windows, you are wrong. How big of a change would it to be to say that I can't open a .jpg I made with the Gimp in Paint Shop? That I can't use an open-source driver to power a proprietary device?

There should be restrictions on open sourced programs, but I think these restrictions should be
to protect the user, not restrict him.

Don't make money off someone else's free software, and don't tell me how to use it.

Or using the same password everywhere.
You have to assume distrust with sensitive information. One place i used to work at was compromised, not because of weak passwords, but because the network was sniffed and they wern't using SSL.
I would be willing to bet that the intrusion into Microsoft wasn't a flaw in their web server, or any other program misconfigured. I would bet it was some kind VPN account that was compromised.
