Suppose you and a friend have sensitive data, and you ONLY want yourselves to have access to it. Here's what you do...
Get a USB hub and 2 of these, hook them both up to a linux box, then use RAID to span a partition across them. That way, you can ONLY get the information when both of you are there, and anyone wanting it would have to steal/kill both of you to get it. It makes it a bit more harder brings you that much closer to Mission Impossible:)
Here is a toy that they recommend for turning a "war chest into a toy chest"
Cranium Cadoo for Kids, Cranium, $20
Recommended Age: 7+
Description: A board game that combines trivia, charades, drawing, sculpting, ?secret decoder? glasses and more.
Why we chose it: Everybody is good at something-and this game makes that obvious. Children draw on a variety of skills and talents to win. This game assures that everyone will have their turn to shine as players act, sculpt, draw, answer trivia questions, crack codes, find household objects and solve word puzzles-often with a lot of laughter sprinkled in.
Teaching kids to crack codes....*shakes head* what have we come to??? WHAT ARE WE TEACHING OUR CHILDREN??? WON'T SOMEBODY PLEASE THINK OF THE CHILDREN???

I'm afraid that I don't have as much self control as you do:) The more I think about it, the more I feel like I'm going to buy this CD for the express intent of distributing it over the internet. I know it probably makes me look like an ass, but I'm not sure I care any more. I buy my music, and I listen to it on my computer...I do have a decent CD player at my house, but with the hours that I work, I might as well not have one. So I think I'm going to put it to good use, recording the songs to my computer...I'm still debating about taking the CD back when I'm done though...I know I shouldn't, but these people make me mad enough that I want to screw them back...
Wouldn't it work using a dual-homed 486 as a gateway? I just have a DX2/66 with 2 intel cards as my gateway, using ipchains to masq and it works great. they see an Intel NIC as the MAC address, and think it's 1 computer, and I just run all my services to the internal interface. No problems.
That's a very interestng idea...there's no reason we can't write our own config files:)
I would like to see the whitepapers on this when it comes out....sounds fun to hack around on anyway....
If you've read ANY interview with Linus, the interviewer always and consistantly asks what he plans to do with Linux now that Microsoft has Feature X. Linus's answer is always along the vein of "I don't care what Microsoft does. I don't care what Windows has. All I want to do is make my operating system good. Can't you people understand that?!?!? What's the MATTER WITH YOU PEOPLE?!?!?!? DON'T YOU GET IT???"
OK, so he doesn't rant at the end there, but I could understand if he did. I'd feel the same way if people kept asking me how I was going to catch up to a subservient competitor too...
Right. I get your point, and agree with you...BUT
Lets be honest with ourselves. Has Microsoft ever..EVER wanted to help someone who couldn't benifit them financially? The fact that the high school hacker-larva isn't able to give Microsoft money is the reason that he can't have the subscription.
Microsoft's history is a string of increasingly brazen attempts to aquire more and more money by means fair and foul. Aquiring money is what business is all about, and capitolism is a Good Thing(tm) in practice, mostly because communism doesn't work out except on paper. In capitolism, you have to play by some rules though. Microsoft has not played by these rules. It's just another attempt in that direction. I can't see why anyone would be suprised...I thought even Microsoft had a limit until they started forcing people to pay > $1000 for a $400 console.
War is Peace. Choice is Slavery. Ketchup is a Vegetable,
I want to start out this comment by saying I am unalterably opposed to this legislation. If passed, this is fragment the technology industry beyond repair by either forcing manufacturers to create multiple versions of hardware, or not release devices in the USA for fear of lawsuits.
That being said...
If this law passes...IF....then I think that open source will become a cradle of freedom, but in the process, will carve the "technology haves/technology have-nots" line in stone. If this passes, we need to follow the guidelines that they give us. We need to put all the security measures in the code..right there for everyone to see. And remember, not only will they be able to see them, they will be able to edit them out, and recompile. Not that this will likely be legal...but the people writing the software won't be the ones breaking the law...it will be us. A sad, sorry state of affairs, for sure, but this law will not pass, and if it does, it will not stand for long. Any person that looks at what they are attempting knows that, while the intent is not evil, the method they are using is unconstitutional. Life as we knew it is slowly slipping away, on a dozen fronts. We're not going to win each battle, but if we keep a cool head, and look at things from the perspective of the people we are against, then we will prevail in the long run.
I agree completly...Free as in Speech is confused, and convoluted. We need something that the everyday person will understand. We need to adopt the phrase
Free as in Legos
which, of course, means free to do whatever we want with the building blocks...
btw, I know there's no such word as legos...most people don't know/care, and it makes more sense than free as in speech (only used because people recognise it)
I agree completly. When I started working for my current employer(a midsized ISP in WV) we had 1 Redhat webserver that no one knew how to configure. During the 6 or 7 months that I've been here, we've uninstalled the RH Box, and a few NT boxes in favor of Slackware boxen. I've instructed the techs how to learn/use/love linux, with varying degrees of success. The systems admins and I have been pushing to install Apache in favor of IIS, which has given us some security issues in the past. Upper management (and our webmaster) have been resisting, and I think that it's more because they are familier and comfortable with Windows.
Fear not, brothers! We're fighting the good fight!
Actually, it did have lyrics...they just sucked.
Gene MoMoney Roddenberry felt that he needed more cash than he had., Alex Courage (who wrote the theme music) was set to recieve royalties every time the music played. Good ole Gene couldn't not have a part of that, so he penned the lyrics, thereby assuring 50 percent of the royalties. Gee, what a swell guy. Read about it here at snopes:
Exactly...and I doubt that it's ALL headed STRAIGHT FOR US!!! Maybe in Hollywood, where our tiny little rock is automaticly the target for everything from comets to land-grubbing aliens, but space is a really big place, and we're a pretty small target.
ABC News just reported that the Pentagon was not the origional target for the airliner. The White House was the target, as was Air Force One. I really don't understand how they thought a 767 jumbo jet could take out a 747 with a military escourt...
