If your university tasks you to solve a problem and you write code to solve that problem, does your university own the code?

The answer likely depends on your answer to the following question: Are you self-employed, or are you an employee? This is a matter of fact and is determined by conditions of your contract.

If you are an employee, your goose is cooked.

If you are self employed, then you maintain code ownership.

When arranging future contracts with your university, you should ensure that you are self employed.

  3. Quick and dirty calculation of fuel efficiency on Fuel Efficiency and Slow Driving? · · Score: 1
Here is a quick and dirty calculation you can do yourself the next time you are on the highway.

    1) Choose a straight and level section of highway.

    2) Get up to the speed limit and take a reading of your tachometer's RPMs.

    3) Reduce speed by 10% and take a reading of your tachometer's RPMs.

    4) Did your RPMs go down by more or less than 10%?

If your RPMs went down by more than 10%, then you have better fuel efficiency at the reduced speed.

If your RPM's went down by less than 10%, then you have better fuel efficiency at the higher speed.

Wind direction, open windows, and the presence of hills will all have effects on your efficiency. You should strive to eliminate such differences when taking your readings.

Well this ought to change. My swap partition is going. Thanks for making me think a little.

  6. On top of the World on Why Linux Doesn't Spread - the Curse of Being Free · · Score: 1

Average Joe (fictitional) buys a new computer with the latest hardware and tries to get some Linux distribution to recognize everything.
He fails - he would have to wait, say, a year for all of his drivers to be incorporated into the kernel.
Well Windows seems to recognize everything - so he installs a Microsoft O/S and thinks he's on the top of the world.
He figures it's $100 (or so) well spent because it gives him access to all of his toys.

Currently, hardware manufacturers release Microsoft drivers on release of their products.
Until Joe can buy a new computer with a version of Linux recognizing the whole shebang, old Microsoft will maintain its O/S dominance on newly-purchased computers.

Year-old computers are fair game for Linux.
It is just hard to get Joe to switch operating systems once he's started on the Microsoft path.
I set my 67-year-old mother (not fictitional) up with a 1-year-old Linux box and she is perfectly happy.
She does not want to switch to Microsoft because she is used to Linux.

    Habits are hard to break.
To get Joe on board with Linux, the hardware manufacturers would have to supply Linux drivers quickly.
Who is going to get them all to do that?

I am trying - by only buying Linux-supported hardware.

To get rid of the bees, simply gab away on your cellphone.
Make sure your children have cellphones, and ensure they are in constant communication with all of their friends.
Ask your cellular service provider to install a communications tower/link (whaterver it's called) on your property.

One final word of advice: I suggest acting immediatley.
With many of the world's bees in peril, it won't be long before laws are passed to protect your pest bees.

  11. Best razor for no shaving cream on Moore's Law For Razor Blades? · · Score: 1
Allergy issues caused me to stop using shaving cream over a decade ago. A little hot water and a good razor are all I need.

The problem with most razors, when shaving cream is not in the mix, is that they clog up with hair too quickly. The easiest razor to use without shaving cream is the Bic Metal razor, which unfortunately is no longer available in Canada.

Simply putting a Bic Metal razor (it has a single blade and a black handle - not a white handle) under a small amount of running water for a fraction of a second cleans it out. Each razor lasts about twenty shaves.

Fortunately for me, I bought a lifetime supply of these razors when they were getting hard to find in stores. I hope my supply doesn't rust out.

I wonder if the advent of the multiple blade razor led to the demise of my favourite model.
