  1. The Right Way to Loan on Gamer Slain Over Virtual Property Dispute · · Score: 2, Insightful

You need a contract. If you're loaning something worth more than $20 to someone you wouldn't trust with your life, write it down. IANAL, but as I understand it, if the court can interpret the meaning of your contract, it's valid. So: I, XXX, loan YYY to ZZZ on DATE. ZZZ agrees to return it, undamaged, on OTHER DATE. If YYY is damaged, ZZZ agrees to purchase a new one, keep the loaned YYY, and give me the new YYY. Signed: XXX, ZZZ, DATE What's happened is not theft, but breach of contract. Without a contract, the authorities can do nothing.

  2. Re:A losing battle? on Blizzard Drops the Hammer on Gold Farmers · · Score: 1

I was following your argument, right until you got to the conclusion. I'd argue for the redesign of MMORPGs. The design that says you spend time doing 'less fun' to get to 'more fun' activities is flawed. The act of playing the game should be fun in itself. If it's not, why play? Doesn't the existence of gold farmers imply that the game has tedious, un-fun bits? Shouldn't those bits be designed out of the game?

  3. Star Chamber on 2005 Independent Games Festival Winners · · Score: 1

    Got nothing. Bummer.

Actually, I think of it more as a computerized board game than an arcade game. Most of the other entries (okay, I've only actually looked at Gish and Wik) seem to fit better into a traditional genre ("Platformer" for those two).

  4. Star Chamber on Play The Independent Games Festival · · Score: 1

My sig is on-topic for once! I've been playing Star Chamber for about 6 months now, and I think I'm starting to get it. Low system requirements, solid gameplay, and a lot of gamespace to explore. Check it out.

  5. What a terrible plan on In-Game Advertising Coming to Anarchy Online · · Score: 1

    I think that's terrible.

One of the reasons to NOT watch TV is because of the incessant advertising. I don't like ads in my movies, and I don't want ads in my games.

Gaming is about being told lies and enjoying it. Advertising is about lying to me to get me to do what you want me to do. One is relaxing, the other is not.

  6. Guess I'm about done with MS on Microsoft to Disable Online Windows Activation · · Score: 2, Interesting

I've avoided XP so far, partly because of the verification process required after reinstall. But I kind of figured that I'd get the version after that (been skipping DOS versions a long time: v3, v5, Win95, Win2k for me). But this is nuts. I already have PC hardware, so I expect that my next OS upgrade will be to Linux, and my next hardware purchase a Mac. Wow. I've been pro-PC for ~16 years. Never saw this coming.
