An Open Source project is being killed because the highest authority in Open Source OS namely Mr. Linus, decided not to use it and now the rest of the community is cheering it. Way to go guys.
Now the corporates will sit back and think "should we use Open Source projects which might end up in a ditch or simply shell out a few bucks and go for Windows? No politics, No court cases, No hassles."
I have a broadband connection. My laptop is always online. But what do I do? Check email, check/., check email again, check/., check/. THATS IT! (and ofcourse a bit of surfing here and there). The current bandwidth is kind of sufficient. I wish I had more when I try to download movies or files, but then I can live with it.
Imaging 2007, *AA has made it almost impossible to download any content. So I'm sitting on 600 MB/sec of BW and checking/. and reading emails.
We've noticed that you're displaying AdWords ads on a site (YourSiteURL) that violates our program policies.
Our program specialists regularly review AdSense websites for various criteria, including, but not limited to, site content, clear navigation, and the site's potential value to the AdSense program and the user experience.
We've found that many of the ads that would appear on your site would not be relevant to your site's content. Because these ads wouldn't provide a valuable experience for your site's users or our advertisers, we believe AdSense isn't currently appropriate for the website listed above. As a result, we've disabled this URL.
Google has certain policies in place that we believe will help ensure the effectiveness of AdWords ads for our publishers as well as our advertisers. We believe strongly in freedom of expression and therefore offer broad access to content across the web without censoring results. At the same time, we reserve the right to exercise editorial discretion when it comes to the ads we display in our AdWords program and the sites on which we choose to display them in our AdSense program, as noted in our respective terms and conditions.
Please feel to reply to this email with any questions. If you manage or own another site on which you'd like to display AdWords ads, you may reply to this email and include the URL in the message. We'll be happy to review this site and consider it for Google AdSense. If the new site complies with our program policies, we'll approve your application and allow you to serve ads on that specific site.
I havent read the article (yet!) but here is what I observed about adsense:
1. Very very very easy to set up
2. Very very very easy to customize
3. Very very very competitive rates (i guess the best). If you know someone better then please post.
4. Very very very good reports
I'm not compaining about advertisments. I fully support. After all its an accepted bussiness model and many reputed websites use it. Here is the problem:
You are a publisher. You publish news and insert lots of ads. Acceptable (if you use it in a non-interfering way).
Now sites like mine (Newster.net... pretty new... still being tested... and not even anywhere near the big fishes) and Google news print 2 lines and the link to the orignal content. So all the people visiting Google news reads the headlines and go to your website and we hope they click your ads. Good model. You gain... and aggregtors try to gain too. Now think of it this way... if there were no aggregators you would see less hits. So even though the aggregators are making some money at your expense, you make more moeny too. So its a win win situation. You get more hits, more money, more fame.
No the problem is when you decide to get greedy. You start inserting ads in your RSS feeds which the aggregators use. So you mess up the formating on my site and try to hog money at my expense. I stop aggregating from your site. My loss. But hey.. your loss too.. think about it!!
NOTE: Google news works different from news aggregators and does not use RSS or Atom (prefered standards for syndication)
Ease of editing. Wikis are pretty easy for most people...
well.. I don't think so. I have contributed a single article till date. And it was very very easy to contribute. Just click a links and type away. But when I go back it said this article needs to be wikified. I followed the link only to be overvhelmed by the stuff I have to do to get it wikified.
Please dont get me wrong. I'm just intend to provide some constructive feedback. "Please make it simpler for Joe Sixpack"
Sites like google news just provides link to the orignal site. This is FREE advertisment for the orignal sites. But some of these News sites like AP are so ignorant that they dont realize the value of this free advertisment. Their loss.
Also while aggregating news for Newster.net I realised that many news sites insert advertisment in their RSS feed. Now this is the stupidest thing that a publisher can do. Newster publishes the headlines and links it back to the orignal site. I thought that was FREE advt enough for them. But inserting advt in RSS feeds only leads them to be black listed at Newster.net
One of the big advantages of BitTorrent/Suprnova is the high level of integrity of both the content and the meta-data due to the working of its global components. We have shown that only 20 moderators combined with numerous other volunteers solve the fake-file problem on BitTorrent/Suprnova
...newly independent project was launched at Wikipedia.com on January 15, 2001....
It has come a long way since then. Search for anything these days and you see a wikipedia link. Its sad that I cant quote (and wisely so) it in any paper.
In a short period wikipedia managed to hold thousands and thousands of articles. click here for the/. article on 300,000 articles on wikipedia.
I still cant figure out how spammers have been kept at bay. Any idea?
I would still say that code is the best design. (these are not my word. I had read is somewhere and I forgot. Sorry about that, else I could have linked it). The article said that code is the best design document and shoudl be considered so. The actual 'construction' phase happen when the code is compiled by the compiler.
Inside sources have confirmed that Longhorn will have a cool feature called 'irregular display'. If the use hits 'windows key + $ + ^ + F13' the screen would emit a low wave length light that will deform the monitor. You can preset the deformation patterns before hand. This revolutionary feature uses the 'plastic deformable by light' discovered recently at MIT.
"This is a unique feature which will help us take on OS X Tiger" - Gates
The only problem is that once deformed the monitors cannot be reverted to their orignal shape. MS is hoping that the users wont discover this bug. They might fix this in Service Pack 24 for Longhorn.
"Simply select the search box, start typing, and iTunes will dynamically limit the song list in the player to match your search text. The iTunes search feature was so well-done, in fact, that Apple decided to adopt a similar approach in various places throughout OS X Tiger"
The author thinks that this is the cool thing about Spotlight? Come on! gimme a break. Winamp offered a similar search God knows from when. This is not what is cool about spotlight.
What is really cool is that the OS is always aware of the files and the information about the files. Since it is integrated with the OS it is much more efficient than the tools like Google Desktop Search which is at the application layer over the OS.
What is really cool is that developers can use APIs to use the features of spotlight.
These are the things that are cool and not some GUI gimmicks
With services like blogger and live journal an average joe can set up a blog in under 3 minutes. Most blogs these days (not all but most) are set up by people with no sense of publishing online content. This is bearable. That are what blogs are for. Putting your thoughts out there without having to be a professional. Now a even bigger section of people are new to blogging and super dumb. They are all pumped up. They jump from blog to blog thinking that all blogs are setup by stupid people. Now some smart ass people disguise harmful code as innnocent blogs. Imagine you go to a blog and see "Hi, I'm the innocent abercrombie chick. If you want to see my photos from last night's party, click here. And yes, i dont know why but you might see some message like 'ActiveX' blocked. Please click on 'allow activex on this site'" Isn't it scary?
And an increasing number of websites are putting out web forms like "please enter your yahoo id and password. We will make sure that an invitation is sent out to all your friends." Forget the average Joe, I know real software engineers who have entered their yahoo id and password.

If I can bring news to the public I'm a journalist irrespective of the medium. You can judge me if I'm a good or bad journalist. Even if I'm bad, I'm still a bad JOURNALIST. And if I'm a journalist I should be protected by the same laws that protect the traditional journalists.
So my point is bloggers are journalists and we need not disclose our source of information according to the first ammendment
