Can't we all at least agree that while this movie may have had its weak points, it also had some very strong ones, and all things considered it is in fact a decent sci-fi film
No. This is slashdot, and in turn slashdot is a part of the internet, which in turn is part of human society. Agreement over anything is scientifically proven to be impossible.
You want an informed comment? Stop reading now. Go and see the film.
Reading analysis or reviews of this film is only going to ruin the experience. I went into it knowing nothing about it, my girlfriend suggested it. I'm glad I saw it that way. And this stands, whether you will end up loving or hating it, or being indifferent. I don't think it was super-amazing, and I don't think it sucked. But it's something you should watch unfiltered by preconceptions.
More and more these days, moviegoers are paralyzed by reviews and analysis. Why not simply go to the theater and take a risk, rather than analyzing everything beforehand?
I thought it was more about refugee camps. Of course, apertheid is an obvious element, but much of it is also a commentray on the vast number of displaced people currently living in squalor and treated with disregard by the authorities and population in general.
What? It's not because we'd split into two camps: one that names things sensibly (read: boring), and another that gives everything a comic book gloss (read: juvenile)?
I bet that a word that sounds like Kwee "sounds" cheap to Asian ears,
But it doesn't sound like "Kwee" it sounds like "Chee" - so it has the best of both worlds.
It is only to English speakers ear that Chee sounds cheap
I never said that "Chee" sounds cheap. I said it looks cheap. It sounds perfectly fine to my ears, and most English speakers would know the word, with a significant minority actually participating in practices that use the concept.
They have software processes so convoluted, you need GPS navigation to make sense of them
That doesn't sound very convoluted. GPS is typically used by people too stupid to read a fucking map. So, you're basically saying that their processes are straightforward enough that anybody with basic map-reading skills can easily make sense of them.
Why must we bind ourselves to a transliteration table that winds up producing words that are pronounced nothing like how they are spelled, and further bastardize the English language?
How can you bastardize the English language, when it has always been bastardized? That's the appeal of the English language.
If you hadn't noticed, English is chock-full of words that aren't pronounced how they are spelled. It's a major aspect of the language's charm and beauty. Can you imagine how boring and hideous it would be if every word was spelled phonetically?
What does that have to do with anything? The post I was replying to said "there are much fewer cases of violence against Muslims" and didn't mention anything about the reason. I refuted that. Does anyone seriously believe you have more risk of being violently attacked as an American or Brit, as opposed to being a Muslim living in, say, Pakistan or Afghanistan?
Owning a gaming PC might be considered graphic proof of having more money than sense, at least until you start seeing just how fickle PC gamers are when it comes to what games they're buying and WHY they're buying those games.
But then you look again, and see how much they spend on hardware, despite them being gamers, and games are software. So, rather than pay for what they love, they'd rather pay some completely unrelated hardware company, rather than the software companies that make their beloved games.
Somehow, I don't think that's going to work out so well for them.
Isn't a PC that is only used to play games, just as much of a toy as a console is? And isn't a console that is used as part of a supercomputer just as much of a tool as a PC is?
The thing is, there are much fewer cases of violence against Muslims than there are vice versa.
Where do you get that statistic from? The last decade has been full of large-scale bombings and other military attacks against Muslims from Western forces. See, for example; Iraq, Afghanistan and Israel. Then there are places with smaller-scale violence, like India.
If fame actually meant something that'd be boring, people actually _want_ fame to be meaningless while having a big face value upfront.
I don't think so. Many gamers want to be famous, like fata1ty famous. They know that contrived famousness isn't for real. They know that the "big face value" isn't all that. See for example, the recent "Pranknet" story for example - that group seemed to largely consist of bored gamers (who also happened to be sociopaths).
I have to wonder what the result will be in APB when everyone is seeking their 15 minutes of fame.
Yeah, sounds like the Employee of the Month Award in The Simpsons, where the plant is contractually obligated to give the award to every employee at least once. Real fame is rare, and some players simply won't be good/outrageous enough to reach that level. So, you either end up with people getting disillusioned with the promise of the game, or the concept of "fame" gets diluted so much as to be worthless.
P.S: Excuse my ignorance, but was Kuro5hin actually a site devoted to trolling? Not that I ever read it, but I was under the impression it was a run-of-the-mill discussion board like Metafilter.

Who the fuck calls it "the f-bomb"? It's just a word, not an explosive device.

worth more than your geeky ass.
Not surprising, as geeky ass is a buyer's market at the moment.
What did you expect?
What? It's not because we'd split into two camps: one that names things sensibly (read: boring), and another that gives everything a comic book gloss (read: juvenile)?
What the hell are you talking about?

Kundra is at worst a fraud and at best someone who is clueless.
And you attempt to demonstrate this by linking to well-known clueless fraud, John C. Dvorak? Excuse me while my head explodes.

Oh, waaaaah! Lighten up.
Anyway, $18 million of your money? I doubt that you have ever had that much money to your name, let alone paid $18 million in taxes.
If it is pronounced "chee" why not spell it "chee?"
See my post here for an explanation.

Anyway, why spell it "Qi" when the Chinese/Japanese language does not use the Latin script ?
Because "Qi" is sexy-looking and just begs for an elegant logo. "Chee" looks horrible and cheap.
Once again, you demonstrate why technology nerds should never be allowed to name any product or technology.

Except our chicks are hotter.
Yes, we're well aware of your predilection for farm animals. You can keep that to yourself in future.

How can they have gun crime???
Ummm, because it's in a country that is flooded with guns?
Just start your own Burning Man.
With blackjack, and hookers!
Well, Snow Leopard is coming out next month, and one of its goals is to advance multi-threading at the OS level.
Wonder where the 'original' ownership came from; the first 'owner' of a particular piece of the world ...
