There really wasn't any point in responding to a couple anonymous cowards.
But.. since you have chipped in.
My post was in two parts and had two major points.
1st. my point was there are many terrible things that can happen to you that absolutely allow you to let another human being die (and feel good about it). It wasn't meant to imply that I had had those experiences but were the first examples that came to my head of cases where I would not only watch someone die but be able to assist them on their way without remorse.
There should have been a line between the first part (which was hypothetical) and the second part which is history.
2nd. you always hear that revenge is bad, people who engage in revenge should dig two graves, etc. etc. I'm an old fart and I've taken extreme revenge on other dudes twice in my life and both times felt extremely sweet. Turning the other cheek is not always the best policy when someone dicks you over. The results in each case were quick and very gratifying. Those friends who knew of the events only expressed happiness and admiration of the fact that I was able to act. If someone dicks you over, you stick it in, twist it, and break it off without being an idiot and losing control.
Imagine that other human being destroyed your life and put you in prison for five years.
How about, your children were sexually abused while in child protective services and one committed suicide.
Of course, if the law requires that I go get help, I'd have
to
go . . . get . . . help . . . as . . fast . . . . as . . . . possible.
I've done the non-vengeance thing and I've done the vengeance thing and let me tell you, vengeance was damn sweet and I have no regrets. It's the only thing that made me smile now and then for a couple years while I recovered back to human.
Morals have always been for the common people and not for the powerful.
It's just easier to catch the president of france breaking copyright law while pushing Draconian copyright laws these days.
I think the combination of computers, cameras, and suppression of computer and camera evidence against the powerful (re: england) will put the nail in the coffin and we will indeed end up with an endless future of a boot on the face of humanity.
If google had told china to go screw itself, they would have had a defense.
But they didn't.
So they lost their effective "common carrier" status and now must comply with the laws of every country on earth.
The only way around this would be to *not serve* to a country unless it signs up to allow google. The signup would have a complete pass on conforming to laws or a specific list of laws the country really really cared about. Google could then decide if the cost of compliance was worth serving the country.
Pretty much 100% of the content I created was removed (some of it arbitrarily-- and on obscure subjects where the options were my content or nothing).
I still update little pieces-- and still have things backed out-- even automatically.
There's an obscure 1930's movie that lacked information about where it was filmed. I added the information and a link to the larger site where i got the information from in the link section. The link was automatically removed. I wouldn't be surprised if the rest of my post is gone by now.
The hispanic numbers of 15% are highly concentrated in a small number of states. For example, California is 76.6% white... but that breaks down to 37% hispanic and 39% non-hispanic.
Estimates are for a Hispanic majority in California and Texas in the near future.
This is a problem when they lose interest in fairness in proportion to their power.
There are small manufacturing, cleaning, and food making companies in Texas which have already had some issues in this area.
SHELBY, N.C. - A nationwide freight management company violated federal law by refusing to hire non-Hispanics, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) charged in a lawsuit it filed today....October 1, 2002, through June 30, 2004, Fort Smith, Ark.-based Propak Logistics, Inc. engaged in unlawful employment practices by refusing to hire an entire class of people for non-management positions at its Shelby, N.C., facility because of their non-Hispanic national origin. The complaint said that the company hired predominantly Latinos to the exclusion of equally or more qualified non-Latinos...
Discrimination by whites is wrong. A large number of whites agree with that position. So is discrimination by everyone else. Some other minorities don't seem to agree with that half of the equation.
But... as long as we are a nation of laws, it will fix itself eventually.
My point was, it's been a long sucky multi-decade period for white males ("males" in general but white males benchmark to their dads and it's a pretty hopeless comparison). Once we hit parity, at least the pain will stop.
If your boss gives you a car, you feel great. If your boss gives your co-worker two cars, now you feel badly.
The last three decades have consisted of taking away pieces of white middle class males cars until now they are riding a used bicycle only very slightly better than everyone else's.
The drop in status, income, prestige, and even the ability to retain a job has been painful and protracted. Very soon white males will be a minority in many areas and from what I've seen, the former minorities have a lot of illegal practices (like hiring only the same minority as they are) which no one is willing to fight against yet. I think that at some point very soon (the next 10 years), you will see a Mexican company based in the U.S. sued successfully for not hiring/promoting white males.
What is missing from most porn (old and new) is the seduction.
I've never found people screwing to be erotic (even if both are female). There was one I saw back in the late 80's/ early 90's tho-- I think it was directed by a female (back before females became so much more masculine) and she had two people, fully dressed, standing talking in front of a fireplace for about 5 to 10 minutes that was one of the most erotic things I've ever seen. Both were good but average looking without makeup.
They went from casually talking to credibly aroused and there was the electric moment when both realized they were going to do something. I can't even recall the sex scene after but I still remember that scene two decades later.
Sex is usually about rubbing one spot a lot. It often looks goofy. The seduction is the part that is interesting to me.
The trade balance is strongly related to the fact that they are artificially keeping their prices low by buying U.S. bonds.
If they keep this up, at some point, the trillion+ dollars they have spent to artificially sell goods will come home worth nothing.
The U.S. still manufactures more (http://investing.curiouscatblog.net/2008/09/23/top-manufacturing-countries-in-2007/) with a fraction of the population.
The U.S. is on a bad path in part. A larger issue is that with the world flattening- it's only natural that india and china are going to catch up. However, they can't export to smaller countries and keep all their own people employed. With 10's of millions of extra males, they need social stability. They need to get the internal markets going before this hat trick turns ugly due to internal civil unrest.
Hmmm.
That's a toughy. So many to choose a couple from...
I guess Vacation Leave and 5 hour work weeks?
Leave any job with unpaid overtime.
Fail at unpaid overtime.
This is one of the reasons I left IT as a developer.
We were expected to work holidays and weekends while the rest of the business was not.

Most content of most print newspapers is the same wire news.
Online, anyone can see the wire source-- so what is the value in the local paper?
That and the fact that as papers stopped doing true "deep" news, they lost their value against TV and magazines.
Exactly.
Converting the core organization rules to logically correct statements eludes business types.
"I want a sales report", "I want a weather simulation" just isn't going to cut it.
However, entire classes of program will become easier.
The gui stuff is highly automated compared to back when it started.
Business people especially do not want to think precisely. It makes them feel badly.
They are usually extroverted big picture types- not detail types.
Let's see.

Man! Those are some heavy pillows!
Looks useful. Someone mod this up. B)

It's a different kind of flying!
And don't call me Shirley!
Google Analytics
Just behind doubleclick.net
It never makes a noticeable difference to have both disabled so far.
Another reason to avoid Internet Explorer until it gets a no script equivalent (which it never will).
I question any morality that ignores reality.
Everything you say is true and, yet, you still missed my point.
You are looking at it from the opposite end.
A lot of people who love it and would do well do not enter the field because the status and compensation are bad.
They would like to do it, but since it is actively painful unless you are a genius (and sometimes even then), they do something else.

I was going to say stop paying executives and lawyers so much.
But then I realized an even more fundamental problem.
Science is hard. Degrees are expensive in the U.S.
Knowing science does not result in either good pay or security.
So smart people choose other fields which require boots on the ground, better security, and better social status.
Only suckers do science right now.

When I was growing up porn stars were very rare.
Today they are very common.

Yes, Kite me will opens sadly! Defined all an language me say it does.
Really it is just recognizing reality.
Law and society grows out of the barrel of a gun.
At any time, a person is willing to use violence and is stronger than you, then your legal agreements may become null and void.
When the rich get all the food and property (as they do every few centuries), then the poor rise up and kill them and restart the cycle.
Violence is the exit clause when the other side has set the rules up so you are screwed and have no other way out except to starve or become slaves.
Legal rights only exist if someone somewhere is willing to get violent over them.
If you owe someone $10,000, they own you.
If you owe someone $1,000,000 you own them.
If you owe someone $1,000,000,000,000... there is not much they can do.
China's economy is a fraction of the size of the U.S.
Hurt us? sure. slit their own throat doing it-- damn straight.
