Third. I've got an openfire server running at my office. It's quite easy to administer (and upgrade). I've used Spark and it's also quite easy to use, but we're using pidgin because we have no restrictions about connecting to outside IM servers.
They're for sure missing the "telecom corridor" in the DFW area (hello, TI, inventor of the silicon transistor!) and "research triangle" in North Carolina.
don't forget lockdown root.
running ldap, kerbos, samba, etc and you don't lock the users out of local root, goodby security.
sudo su - . Gives you everything!
In Lewisville, TX we "destroy" landfill methane and generate electricity at the same time. Does that give us double carbon credits since we're using "biomass" energy?
If anyone wants to send me money, I will donate my son's dirty diapers to the landfill in their name!
My best offer coming out of school was for a QA position. I took it with the intention of moving over to development at a later date (which I finally did!).
The reason these types of systems aren't used already is the same as the reason most datacenters aren't supplying our servers with DC power to prevent the loss of 20% of the energy before they even start processing data.... There aren't any standards, and there is a lot of legacy equipment out there. We need intel, and Sun, and a bunch of switch manufacturers to get together and come up with a standard for external DC power supplies and cooling connections.
You have apparently never heard of the telecom industry. Every piece of equipment they use is DC.
Intel has several platforms (ATCA uses DC exclusively) such as a 2U rackmount chassis that have DC options for the power supply.
As far as externel DC power supplies go, Tyco has a very nice 1U power supply that converts AC to DC. I've also used products by Kepco and APC to get the job done.
Hey pooslinger... I would be willing to give some help to this as well. I do free tech support for a lady who runs a dry cleaners and would love to give her a better POS system. Right now all she has is a cheapo cash register and then she enters stuff into quickbooks manually. Shoot me an email and we'll talk some more. (my slashdot username at hotmail.com)

I sometimes wonder if that is a phenomenon across all engineering disciplines or if it is unique to software development. I worked at a civil engineering firm as an IT tech and it never seemed like they were missing deadlines. Sure the construction would sometimes not be completed in time, but the design and comment phases seemed to not take as long.
There's only really one person who might sit in the intersection of "been in space" and "reads slashdot", so unless Shuttleworth is reading this you just wasted a minute of your life that you will never get back;)
The real intersection ought to be "going to space" and "reads slashdot" since this information is no longer pertinent to people who have been in space.
I agree! OLGA was a great resource for learning how to play guitar. Art is 99% derivative. Olga was where guitarists spent time transcibing notes by ear in much the same way painters make copies of the Mona Lisa trying to learn their style and method. In my opinion, it is only a further honor to have your work meticulously copied down. Oh well, I'll probably have to tell my kids about the good old days when we were allowed to talk to each other over the internet about how to play riffs.

Software is an adjective modifying the word developer. Similarly the article 'a' is a modifier of the word developer.
He's "a developer". What kind of developer? He's a __software__ developer.

If you read toshiba's press release, they will be making a 256GB 1.8" drive.
My first thoughts... Have my dog eat another dog. That way there's multiple versions of DNA in the poo...

Please read more into what someone is implying. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comma_(punctuation)#In_numerals
In many part of the world, periods are used where we in the US would often use a comma.
Nope, real programmers use butterflies
I saved that file to a CD and all that happens when I load it up is that explorer comes up with 1 file on the CD.
I really think it should be:
In Soviet Russia computers _______ you!

Where I work, with our legacy product, vi doesn't work on the console port. You have to use edline!

i would mod you up if I had the points. The more time and money you give an engineer, the better the quality of the end product.
Since when was linux a custom OS? Sure you'll have to have your software compiled for the specific CPU, but that's relatively simple.
Actualy, Firefox is tri-licensed. So take your pick. If you want to redistribute the code under the GPL, feel free to do so.

I'm just waiting for the "ed" exploit: http://www.gnu.org/fun/jokes/ed.html
darn... I'm wrong too. it's 128 bits... 32 Hex character=16 bytes=128bits
