  1. The beauty is in the proof. on The World's Most Beautiful Equations? · · Score: 3, Insightful

Not to be a humbug, but isn't the beauty of an equation in it's proof? I mean, mathematically, the difference between 2^(3*4)=4096 and e^(pi*i)=-1 isn't a whole lot. The proof, however, for e^(pi*i)=-1 is real mind-bender that culminates in a simple, beautiful little equation. It's that culmination that makes it beautiful, not the equation itself.

On the other hand, an ugly one would be an equation that's long and complex with just as long and complex a proof.

A college football team is always aiming to win the league.

Okay, okay, as a University of Kentucky fan, my view of what a football team should strive for is probably skewed compared to most people. (We'd be happy with a 5-win season...) :-P

So yeah, that analogy probably isn't the best. My point is people shouldn't give up striving for something good (in this case: making Debian a quality, free [as in speech] distro) just because some market analyst or statistician (neither of which have yet to be produced by the parent-poser) says you can't.

Debian IIRC has repeatedly stated they are not trying to become the OS everyone uses, just to make a good OS for the people who make it to use, and make it freely available for anyone who wants to use/improve it. So they don't need to plan to grow because growing isn't an important objective for them.

I think our definitions of growth are different. If the definition of growth is developing the distro to become a more usable, stable, and versatile OS, I think Debian's goal should be to grow. However, if the definition of growth is to snag a greater user-base, I totally agree with you -- that's not what Debian is about.

  21. Fun with Cool Edit Pro on Driving Away Teens With High Frequency Noise · · Score: 1

I know a guy who in high school (~2 years ago) had his laptop with him nearly every day. He used Cool Edit Pro's tone generator to make this noise where the frequency occelated but occelated faster and faster, and trended higher and higher in frequency. So he'd start it way below the laptop's speakers frequency response (~5Hz) and it would take almost 15 seconds for the frequency to top out before going back down. In the next cycle, it would top out just a little higher in frequency and take just a little less time to get there. Eventually, it would get to where it was ~16KHz and changing very rapidly (very annoying) but since it took so long and was so gradual getting that way, nobody in a quiet library really notices. What's funny is it creates tension in a quiet room, while most people don't consciously notice it. So he'd let it get to it's most annoying point, and release all that unconscious tension by slamming a stack of books down on a table. There wasn't a single person in the library that didn't gasp. :-D
