Cost the taxpayer? Some dollars for sure. Cost the economy? Very little - If anything, helping provide health coverage for all citizens probably helps the economy quite a lot.
Why? My retired parents have a Gateway PC that runs perfectly fine and runs XP perfectly fine. Doesn't crash, doesn't blue screen, they just turn it on and it works. If it ain't broke don't fix it.
No, it implies (and probably not exclusively) that they come from an English-speaking nation. There are Canadian astronauts and British astronauts.
In the sixties (context of this thread and article) there were no English-speaking space explorers who weren't American. So "Astronaut" remains correct.
Funding science had nothing to do with going to the moon. It had everything to do with beating those darn commie Russkies.
Sure there was some of that, but there was also very much a 'we can do anything attitude' back then that seems to be mostly gone, other than in niches like iPad development. China is surging ahead of the USA and there isn't any national drive to beat them at anything...
For example, I don't see any evidence that it would take longer to negotiate a budget.
Generally, in other democracies, a party goes into an election saying "elect me and this is how we'll spend your tax dollars." The party that is elected then acts on that promise. If no one party has a majority then there is a negotiation and if the budget if defeated then the government is dissolved and there is another election.
What I find fascinating is this: In most other democracies, if the government can't pass a budget, then the legislature is dissolved and an election is called. New people are elected and they try again. Seems crazy to me that there's no framework of this in the USA - If the government is at loggerheads it's time to let the people decide via an election.
>> That's just what oppressive governments do. They have to monitor everything to stay in power.
> Just like the US of A.
So if the USA is able to 'monitor everything to stay in power,' why is the government stalemated at the moment? Why does the President have no power? Why, unlike in Russia, are people currently able to publicly oppose their leader with zero consquences?
What disappoints me about all the stories of Jobs's excellence is it's apparent that, because I'm unable (and unwilling) to work 80 hours per week, I'll never be part of something amazing. Seems like no one has ever taken their kids to soccer practice *and* changed the world.
Because with taxes you can write off expenses related to the money you earn, not the money you use to live. Where it gets fuzzy is commuting - One might argue that's a cost that should be tax-deductible.
If my 'feed' is anything to go by, the entire planet was watching "Breaking Bad" last night.

A little understood fact is the iPhone's secret to success is Jobs managed to get AT&T on board.
Still remember the first "Web Page" I ever viewed - Back in the spring of 1994 I went to visit a friend of mine who was in grad school at UIUC and he fired up Mosaic to show me the latest "Doctor Fun" cartoon.
How much does ObamaCare cost the economy?

How does such blatent [sic] trolling get a +5 Insightful?
Because it's the truth. (c) 2005 Gateway hardware running a patched XP, Chrome, Thunderbird & Office 2000. No crashes.
Just let XP finally die...

It all seems to come from countries afar!
Socialist commies, the lot of 'em.
the richer are getting richer and the poor, poorer.
Then pic up an 8300-series Blackberry Curve. It has maps & GPS, but remains pretty old skool.

But I really want GPS with some sort of maps in an emergency
If it's an 'emergency' then any basic feature phone will provide emergency services with your GPS location when you call them.
Cue tinfoil hat brigade.

The other men in space in the sixties were "Cosmonauts."
oops...That should have read The other men AND WOMAN in space in the sixties were "Cosmonauts."
It's just Glenn now, the last of the Original Seven American astronauts.
"American" is redundant. "Astronaut" implies American. The other men in space in the sixties were "Cosmonauts."
All that sounds totally right, because after all terminals and networks don't need administrators or support staff.
Of course they do, but they need way fewer of them. No exchange server admins. No desktop admins. No server specialists.
Heck, the office manager could handle a lot of it:
"My Chromebook isn't working."
"Here you go." (Hands over replacement Chromebook from cupboard.)
"Thanks."
(Employee goes back to work.)
Do not talk to the cops,
Your house is broken into / your car is stolen.
Do you talk to the cops?
You witness a violent crime - You have a good description of the perp and you manage to get the license plate number of his car.
Do you talk to the cops?
Your mother has been taken to the hospital, is near death, and you're pulled over for speeding on your way there.

Aside from guitar / bass amplifiers and hi end stereo equipment who uses vacuum tubes ?

Steve didn't work 80 hours per week and took his kids to soccer practice.
Nope - The fact that he put work before family was well-documented. He was a lousy father.

Insightful comment, but this being Slashdot you are of course modded 'troll.' Sigh.
