Funny yet true.
I entered the 'real world' in January of '05, and find myself swearing at computers all the time. Such is life. BUt one thing is always on my side - I entered hardware engineering because I ENJOY it, and I love my job no matter how much technology pisses me off.
Anyway, computers can be frustrating, but I'm sure you'll do fine.
I'm quite surprised that there wasn't much mention of mini-ITX. I didn't read the article word for word, but I can't recall any references to it. Mini-ITX is a HUGE benefit in my opinion, because it has the Svideo out and RCA output right on board. With that said, all you really need is a case, memory, hard-drive, and a PVR card to have the whole thing in a box.
I must say the MII series VIA boards are damn slick. Especially with the built in PCMCIA slot. The article kept referring to multiple cards and "expensive cases". I found a Travla C158 that wasn't a huge beast, but also had everything I was looking for - including a power supply. The case was like $130 USD.
Good article. But for those who are serious about building a DVR in a small/slick/feature-packed box, you really need to check out mini-ITX.
I just finished school, but the only thing that earned me my job was my experience as an intern. Granted, I don't have a lot. But I know many (more than not) with the same degree as myself who are still unemployed.
Hell yeah. I just graduated from PSU, and I must say the Comp Eng department was rigorous. I did however get employed through the school. Interestingly, at my place of employment, we have about 5 software developers, one of which writes our linux drivers.

I still enjoy the destruction method: Throwing it off a cliff, Throwing it in a river, Putting it on railroad tracks, The Office Space method, etc.
For those who don't feel like reading 1 through 11.
