Remember its you on the left that constantly advocate and pass legislation limiting various kinds of speech...
By definition, liberals are against any limitation on free speech. Maybe you are thinking of some other group? Democrats and Republicans, for instance?
Define corruption as it relates to a business. Last I checked, that was normally reserved to refer to politicians and other public servants who were on the take, and the businesses or individuals on the other side of the transaction. So unless you have reason to believe that FB was doing this as some quid pro quo with a candidate or congressman to get favorable results in some public matter, STFU. The only other definition I see that might be applicable is a morally depraved state. Weeding out pro-Trump garbage is the antithesis of morally depraved, though, so clearly that's not what you meant.
Perhaps, but the Republicans have moved to the extreme, too. You simply have to look at Ronald Reagan to know that what used to be middle-right (and is even held up as conservative), would be too far to the left to run in the GOP now. Raised taxes 19 times, granted amnesty for 3 million illegals, engaged in unconditional talks with the enemy, etc. Not to mention the fact that he was from Hollywood.
Having recently driven a Caddy rental car, I can attest to the shittiness of non-tactile interfaces. I couldn't even change the A/C fan speed without staring at the console. Give me knobs and buttons over a slick chrome bar and a touchscreen any day.
I'm sorry, I read that in my head with a sarcastic tone. Are you being serious? Is my company just so incompetent that they set it up and rolled it out completely wrong? Part of my problem with it is how bad Office 2013 sucks.
You forgot the most important feature of SharePoint: Pissing off users by not doing anything well, despite being told by the corporate mother ship that we have to use it. Basically it does nothing that a good corporate share couldn't accomplish. Hell, until the most recent revision, you couldn't even view thumbnails of JPGs. Still can't upload an entire folder at a time, either.
You really need to read Harsh Mistress. It's one of my favorite AI books ever. A lot of the economics/physics/politics makes no sense, but it's still interesting. I rather like the idea of alternative family structures, and a society where everybody is expected to participate in the justice system.
I have a problem with this. On one hand it seems sick that a father-to-be should be granted the right to terminate. After all, it's a medical procedure for the mother-to-be, and it's not exactly pleasant. On the other hand, it also seems wrong to be stuck paying child support for 18 years for a baby he didn't want. Maybe the guy (and gal) should not have had unprotected sex until they both wanted kids. You assertion that the father has to take responsibility for his actions implies that the woman had no say in the matter. (I assume we're not talking about a rape case here.)
What about the case where a woman lies and says she's on the pill because she actually wants a baby? I know at least one guy who this happened to. Luckily the baby-momma was in a different state and couldn't find him to come after him for child support, but still... hey wait a second, weren't we talking about sci-fi awards...!?!?!
The core problem seems to be that people don't really understand what is in their long-term best interest. So what appears to be a smart decision to one person becomes a really big problem when everybody else makes the same decision. It's like the prisoner's dilemma, or the Trump/Cruz/Kasich problem. If everybody does what's in his immediate best interest, everybody may end up with a sub-optimum outcome.
What if, instead of threatening DDoS, they had chosen their words more carefully. "We have received actionable intelligence that your company is being targeted by $SCARY_HACKER_GROUP. They will DDoS your site on or around $DATE. We have the ability to thwart their actions, but we request a one-time fee of ##BTC to help cover our costs. Please send the payment to $BTC_ADDRESS." Would this be extortion? Is it equivalent to "Nice bar you have here, it would be a shame if something were to happen to it."
As somebody who has been rear ended at a stop light by somebody who had already stopped, then proceeded to "whip off a quick text," I can tell you it is NOT "perfectly safe." And for the record, fighting kids are a huge distraction. When my children start to act up, I pull into the nearest parking lot. I'm not about to kill everybody or endanger an innocent bystander just because my two little hellions won't STFU. My wife thinks it's perfectly acceptable to fumble with her phone, text, hand things to the kids, or even barf (morning sickness is a real PITA) while driving. Whatever. Not me. I suppose it's possible that I'm just such a bad driver that I need to really concentrate on the task. But I suspect it's more likely that other distracted drivers just don't realize how shitty they drive
I'm no fan of his; I generally dislike music composed in the last 80 years or so. But his improvisational skills and the breadth of his virtuosity are quite impressive. And we should remember that a lot of his douchebaggery offstage was more of an FU to the corporate overlords. His fans just ended up in the crossfire a lot.
Let's say you moved somewhere due to war or human rights violations, something you hoped would be a temporary situation. Would you learn what you thought of as a foreign language right away? Or would you put it off since it was just a temporary problem? 5 years later, when it became clear that you weren't ever going home again, would you learn the foreign language then? How long would it take you to learn it, without any proper schooling? Would you give up after a few months of "where is the library" and "my flat is small"? Or would you stick it out? Then how many more years would it take you to learn medical-specific jargon?
You just explained more about it that that stupid flying umbrella commercial. Although I did like that the beaver says "Leave it to me!" Because none of the people young enough to be interested in their product would even get the reference.
That's funny, I mostly see people use SJW to mean "person I don't agree with." At least here on Slashdot. Of course, there are those true SJWs who feign offense at terms like "waitress" and "Jew's harp." But they are in the minority.
Coulombs is charge. Amps is charge per time. Energy in a short amount of time is the same as power. To say that you need a certain amount of power to kill somebody is false. You need a certain amount of current across the heart (amps not coulombs). That is all. You'd need a battery with a max draw of about 200mA with sufficient voltage to break though the skin (or a pokey thing), while holding the fork in your left hand, and hope that the other end of the fork on your tongue will create a current path close enough to your heart to do damage.
You point out something most people don't like to think about regarding the true nature of law enforcement. Without crime, they would be out of work and/or funding. So the only way to stay employed is to make sure there is something "bad" like drugs or homelessness or terr'ists that needs to be addressed. My favorite is when they do something truly abominable in the interest of "public safety." And it happens at all levels of law enforcement.
Do you think the local PD shortened all those yellow lights because they wanted safer intersections or more profitable ones? If they really wanted to reduce accidents, they could have made longer yellow lights, and enforced existing "following too closely" laws. But it's a lot cheaper to mail people tickets by machine when they roll through a red light on a right turn. The irony is that most of the money paid actually went to an out of state contractor! So they even did "doing your job wrong" wrong.
There's more to it than that. You don't need burger flippers in a society where people can do what they love. There are so many people who like to cook, you could probably find somebody to do it for you in exchange for something you're good at. Installing Linux perhaps.
If you're a professional engineer in Texas, you must submit to a background check including fingerprints. (so much for all that big talk about freedom)

Now that everybody uses tablets, does it matter what's on the desktop?

Don't be silly. They will use Android, not iOS.
I'll stop by tomorrow morning, Frank. But you know you shouldn't be drinking coffee with your high blood pressure.

Because having a female VP pick worked so well 8 years ago?

I made the mistake of clicking on the article. Somehow they got their Flash ads to bypass my blocker. Nearly locked up my machine.

Or the new IEEE Spectrum logo
