It turns out that NTFS has support for both symlinks and hard links, a la ext2 et al. They've never been exposed for some odd reason; presumably MS has decided that the concept of having a file in more than one folder is not completely mind boggling for Average Joe (which sadly, it can be at times).
On the other hand, I believe AMD's got some magic they haven't used yet up their sleeve. Though honestly I couldn't tell you what it is. I'm also surprised they're being so slow about ramping their clockspeeds, but this is probably just so their thermal profiles look superior to Intel's.
I think they have fab problems, actually. They've hired a third party company and are now licensing technology as well in order to get to strained SOI. Even the dual Athlon64/Opteron architecture has existed since before AMD has had the ability to manufacture them (90nm was necessary). If they have something up their sleeve, we won't see it until that third party company (can't remember name) and Fab 36 go into high gear.
The exact same process has begun at Hopkins; we're replacing our miserably old UltraSparc 5s running SunOS 5.x with brand new Linux boxes running FC3. We don't feel compelled to tell the world about it.
The cards everyone really cares about, the nVidia and ATI ones, are covered in several layers of NDA. Hell, we don't even know what ISA the GeForce 6 uses, and AFAIK the Radeon X--- series is similarly shielded.
Just to stick some numbers on this, the minimum power consumption of an Athlon64 Winchester core using Cool n Quiet is approx. 3-5 watts. Its maximum is something like 50. A P4 Prescott isn't even in the same ballpark. An Winchester consumes less power at full load than a Prescott does at idle.
The start up will fix all of the problems with Firefox, like the memory leaks, the general overuse of memory, the startup time, and its tendency to explode for no particularly apparent reason. Hell, they might even fix the fact that its pop up blocker is now rather less effective than IE's.
Or they might just slap a new interface on it and call it a day. But hopefully not.
Yes, it's there, but they do take some effort to hide it.
Say what you will about MS, but Apple is infinitely worse. Yet people are blinded by their admittedly beautiful graphic design.
I don't really know. The NT scheduler (for non-servers) is tweaked to favor responsiveness of all apps over the cpu time of any given app. So if you're multitasking, CPU time division tends to be fairly even. In a high level sense, your Word document might not need all the cycles it's getting (who cares if a spell check takes an extra quarter second?) but the kernel doesn't know that. But if you really/i? want to, task manager allows you to change the priority of processes. So maybe jacking up the priority on vorbis encode will help it finish quicker. Other apps will probably become a little less responsive, but that's to be expected.
DDR teaches you how to dance like a pro!
Karaoke Revolution teaches you how to become a famous pop singer!
Grand Theft Auto teaches you how to become a psychotic serial killer!
And Halo teaches you how to save the universe from aliens!
We need to rebalance the US and Canadian populations. All the evangelicals, racists, and conservatives go to the US. And all the sane people go to canada. Then, when the Revolution comes, they'll be the first ones up against the wall, and we'll be happy Canadians.
Ok, fine, so drivers are fairly privileged in NT and are capable of breaking the system. The same is true for any non-microkernel OS (see: Linux) as well as hybrids like VMS/NT.
Lies. Firefox is open source. It can't possibly have any security problems, or in fact any problems at all. The pop up blocker is perfect in 100% of cases, and anything that you see to the contrary is black magic, for which you'll be burned at the F/OSS stake.
I can't believe how terrible the Evil Empire is. I deleted all of the IE and WMP dlls from my system, because I 3 Firefox. But now my Visual Basic 6 media player with built in browser won't work. Microsoft must have sabotaged the Internet and Media Player controls. And then, I tried to play ASF files in Quicktime, and it wouldn't work! So I went ahead and uninstalled DirectX, and now I can't play Half Life 2! Clearly M$ has set out to sabotage everything!
So...I guess we're waiting on SkiFree 64, Flight Simulator 64, and finally, Super Mario 64.
I am definitely emerging that tonight. Hot stuff.

Yeah...but that's because Firefox is a memory and CPU black hole....have it render a large animated GIF one time, just see what happens.
I saw one benchmark comparing dual Opterons to dual core Opterons...the dual core was faster than conventional SMP, but only by a little bit.
But they can determine your gender when you connect now? Damn, that's just slick.

It's nice that occasionally people show up and remind us of everything that's still wrong with the Linux community. Helps us improve.

Are they extreme to the MAXX...UNLIMITED?!

You...realize those torrents are illegal to use, right?
I'm beginning to suspect that the Slashdot editors don't always read the news articles before posting them.
is definitely not listed by W3C. So you shouldn't be using it at all. How many times do you people have to be told, avoid non standard tags!
Eclipse as an example of software that isn't bloated.
ROFL.

That's because background services mean literal services, not apps that don't happen to be topmost. Your vorbis encoding is still a foreground app.
