just think if instead of just disrupting speech they could use this to disrupt the ability to tell lies, that would sure make it tough for anyone in court or in any sort of hearing...
my mother happens to be a 74 year old great grandmother, she uses Slackware-12.1 and loves it (especially the kdegames package). of course i admin it and what i noticed is i have to do less work with Linux on her desktop as i did when it was running windows, i run the the same thing so i know when i need to drive across town and install an update that when i get an update then i just copy the update to a usb memory stick and take it to her house...
i think people that are clueless about performing tasks on computers are equally clueless on Linux as they are on windows (it is not the OS so much as their refusal to apply themselves to learn and remember the methods used to perform a given task)
thats exactly why I don't use ms-windows anymore, everything is just too open to attack, open Windows Explorer file manager and type in a URL - it does not launch IE, it is IE or morphs in to IE, open Internet Explorer and type in C: hit enter and you can use it as a file manager and change & delete files, if that is not asking for trouble I don't know what is, knowing this and how many users run their PCs 24/7/365 with admin privileges because managing a multi-user system with admin & users privileges kept separate is just too inconvenient...
when Linux becomes too popular and if it becomes the target of malware like windows is I will move to something else, maybe some flavor of BSD or Solaris...
If you take a snapshot of your harddrive/OperatingSystem, and as long as you don't do anything to change it (no writing to disk anywhere, no launching applications) then take another snapshot a few minutes later and another and another, soon this shape/shifting malware will reveal itself, get enough glimpses of it and a picture will emerge so you will know what to look for then know how to eradicate it from your computer, I doubt the kludge like mcaffee & norton are capable but somebody has to rise to the occasion to build something good enough to do this, it would be worth it to leave your PC alone while some anti-malware runs that can deal with this shape/shifting malware and catch it so it can be removed, or reveal a method & list of files so you can manually remove it...
i would take old laptops, install Linux on it with a bittorrent client, load it with lots of mp3 & mpeg files that make the MPAA & RIAA really angry and find a good wifi hotspot and plug the AC adapter to a spare outlet and abandon it, (be sure to wipe any fingerprints off beforehand)...
yup, i agree with the road tax analogy, and agree with the ISPs need to be up front and honest about it so customers know what they are getting, lots better than dishonest marketing hype to get customers to buy then later they feel as if they were lied to and taken for a ride by deceptive marketing...
but i only fire up a bit torrent client about once a year, i recently started bittorrent when slackware-12.1 was released, about 9:30PM i started it and before i went to bed at 11:00PM it was finished so i set it seed all night and killed the client in the morning, now if i started running a bittorrent client all the time i would imagine my ISP would throttle my connection back severely and i could understand why...
i would imagine Asus has this set up so you can update the embedded Linux on the motherboard much like updating the firmware on any other piece of hardware or like the BIOS or router firmware...
i have one of those WRT54G routers and they are as light as a feather, the wifi radio part of it is probably no more powerful than one of those FRS radios you see for sale for 20 dollars (cheap and low power) i bet the transmitter does not kick out more than 1 watt...
if China or Iran or some other enemy country wants to attack the USA and the US government wants to start a botnet let me know i have 2 PCs on 24/7/365 on cable broadband, i will volunteer my PCs to work for the US Government as part of a botnet, Bush may not be my favorite president but i am still an American and know what side my bread is buttered on (just make a Linux version too)...
I agree, a good wifi or sattelite dish but not on the roof but get a antenna tower about 30 feet tall, and put it someone unobtrusively in the back yard, I have a nice aluminum tower in my back yard, and is not even noticeable I paid only one hundred dollars for it used by a ham radio enthusiast that was putting up a taller tower...
Blow it up? with people on board? sure am glad i don't work for NASA...
build a newer & better launch vehicle, the space shuttle belongs in an automobile wrecking yard (or a museum)...
if i use the drug analogy and compare software to drugs i would think FOSS is some good quality marijuana grown in an organic garden no chemical pesticides or any other harmful methods used, and MS-Windows is some dangerous chemical drug cooked up by a mad scientist and sold on the street corners to its addicted customers at exuberant prices...

you are right, HF & lower is the exception, a 2GHz wifi is a long way from way down there...

they better put repeaters on the very tops of the mountains that they need to get over...
the two do not mix well, mountains will severely block radio waves from any part of the spectrum...
