..how much can MS actually change without alienating such a huge base? Sure it'll be great if they had this or that feature but would 95% of people out there, especially companies, want to upgrade to Longhorn and then see their productivity dive while they are getting use to doing things the Longhorn way.
It's hard to please all the people all the time especially if you listen to the/.'ers
live in belgium and you'll know how to make multi-language sites. jesus, the number of times we have demos of CMS systems and the first question i ask is 'how do you implement a multilanguage site?' and they always say 'it'll be in the next edition'. funnily enough they're quite happy to have the admin module in multiply languages but actually having the *site* use multiple languages is always a big no-no.
thanks - that was nostalgic - also listening to the other TripleJ stuff was fun. Dr Karl as PodCast...yippeee! No longer need to wait til midnight to listen to it here in europe.
another difference is that a car is meant to make you go from A to B, maybe with stuff, maybe with extra people. A computer is a computational device, originally, and now more than ever, a communication device. Such a device that can't communicate very well to its user is kinda dumb.
So a computer doesn't perform its main function very well. If it did we'll have a lot less problems. Yeah, I think there is 20% of people using computers that should just shut it down and read a good introductory book or take a course.
The constant frustration I get from my computer is 90% UI issues. (Eg Nero takes 5 clicks of the OK button to begin buring another CD. Why? Why do I need to be asked if I want to save the ISO - every fucken time I want to burn another CD. Compare that to Toast - click big red button - gooood).
for instance, at the time of Tiger's release, I predict that
1. all Mac's will come with 512MB RAM preinstalled, and
2. the Mac mini will get 64MB Video RAM
But these are just a guess (1. I'm certain of, 2. is just a wishful-thinking-guess)
I've read Tiger will require 64 Mb of Video Ram for all the cool "Core Video" features.
If this is right then I would guess there might be a Mac mini upgrade coming around from the middle of this year. I've never seen Apple ship a computer that couldn't use all of the features of its *current* OS before.
obviously there is a percentage of zealots on either side, but the number of "i hate apple" to "shuuut uppp, apple is brilliant" is really high. in fact, the anti-apple people seem to overreact to any positive apple comment.
one thing i did notice is that they assume that we think that apple invented the small form factor or that we think apple invented the motion detector for laptops etc. I would imagine that such pro-apple people exist but none of them are on slashdot. on the other hand the number of anti-apple people that go on and on about how apple users don't know about this or that is ridiculously high.
for what it's worth i think they have left the Finder behind from the rest of the OS and needs some genius inspiration to make it noteworthy
yep, the anti-Apple crowd has learnt from the neocons on how to frame a response. If you keep on saying that Slashdot has been "hijacked" by Apple zealots then everyone from neutral to pro-Apple have to defend their point of view.
Of course, being anti-Apple, really means you're anti-UNIX, which just doesn't make sense on/. So if we want these OS bigots off our website we need to frame their responses as being anti-UNIX. Then we'll win:)
no one said it was ground breaking...just someone wrote an app to take advantage of it. Of course the anti-Apple people will interpret this article to mean that they think Apple invented this etc etc (not saying you are)
It just shows that XCode and the APIs that come with OSX are...well..cool
well it shows you how easy it is to develop something this non-trivial using XCode and how "difficult" it is on other platforms. Either you get Mac OS X or you just complain about its "eye candy"
the Plague caused a steep decline in available labour this created huge raise in wages and a large percentage of land was given to the people who were left. this pretty much created what we would now call the middle class and created a huge demand for products which pretty much kick started western wuropes economy unto and including the industrial age

hear, hear (or "here, here"). You get the general "I agree with you" jist? :)
I think that's how it goes.
ciao
I remember that BeOS said that moving to Intel gave them a huge performance boost, or something along those lines. "Intel good, PPP not so good"

oh memories. Towards 2000, Omega magazine...Did Dr Karl start on Towards or was in the Beyond series?
I felt kinda good...and dirty...at the same time

This is just un undereducated guess.
But thanks for being here in my time of need. greatly appreciated.
Now...where can i get a BT of it?! ;)
you know what i mean

there were many maths geniuses from India during the 1900's. Bose, anyone?
i would agrre with you, but i also think i am pointing something out too. Guess it's both then :)

well it couldn't hurt (apart from the agonising pain and exploding boils)
