There wasn't really anything fucked up going on in them despite the titles of the rooms. They were populated with bots that spammed up everybody with advertisements for sex sites. I guess that's fucked up too but not the same thing. The advertisers just just didn't like having their names/products associated with those particular venues..
Yahoo chat as its described in the story is about as close to efnet irc for people that want voice+chat as there ever was... it was chaotic, crazy, tons of people from all over the world.. what made it special imho was the lack of authority any person could have in chat rooms, there was no way to/kick a person. If enough regulars in a room were sick & tired of hearing someone scream into the microphone, there was a threshold 9-12 people that would have to ignore that person so they couldn't be heard anymore... it was really a democracy in chat.
ya, there were some disturbing chat rooms... the "school & education" user created section was full of "young boyz for dads", "preteen girls looking for fun" type of shit.... there were also lots of arabic rooms that the Al Queada may have been hanging out in, I can't really be sure because most were in arabic font.. very cool stuff.
the only other realistic option for voice chatting is Paltalk imho but there's way too many wanna-be-mini-dictators running chatrooms on their servers, there's just too much authority and their foul language policy is just fucking absurd.

The Cisco self-defending networks I saw on the tv show 24 ? Right after Chloe said that CTU had a proprietory algorithm for cracking blowfish they show some Cisco graphics on a screen and they blow off DOS attacks like, "ohh, we're protected by these self defending cisco networks" or some crap like that. 24 = pentagon & corporate propaganda.
I heard of a procedure called "ballot". Time to use it for this purpose, perhaps?:)

Have to agree with you here. Saw him IRL this year at the Doral tournament and he is *big*. Like you said television doesn't really capture this, maybe HDTV does a better job but I haven't had the chance to watch any golf in that format. His swing is another thing too, you've gotta be there to see him violently smack that ball down the fairway, there's a controlled violence to it, it almost hurts to watch but it's so much bloody fun.
I don't believe it will be Jeb or McCain or any of those Washington/Bush guys. It will be Arnie, The Terminator, Numero Uno! Mark my words, it will happen.

I dont think so. Strongly enforced u.s. export controls have kept the Al Queada from gaining access to militant grade encryption tools.
