Since when is there a shortage of IT workers in America? You mean the guy that answers the technical support is in India? I never would have guessed...
People seem to forget that Microsoft makes money on more than just putting out XBOX2's. They also take ina significant amount on licensing, etc, where they are paid for games designed on their systems. They take home a decent chunk of change for every game developed. Even if they take a HUGE loss on the XBOX2 hardware, they'll make it back in dev fees and royalty style licensing.
Am I the only one growing tired of a new console being released all the time? Maybe it's great and all, but really, why doesn't someone just build an upgradeable console or something? Everytime they come out, I have to replace the box, the controllers, etc. I'd be a lot more willing to shell out for em if I could swap parts at some point rather than having to spend $250 every 6 months for a "NEW" or "BETTER" system, which is bound to be outdated soon with no possibility of playing old games as well.
They key to solving spam is to move away from it. Email has been out quite a long time, and has greatly helped to increase communication in the world. But as many, including Don Knuth, have stated, it's time for email to die its timely death. There are many more capable tools out there, which serve for faster and more reliable communication, without being subject to the extreme abuse of email.
I realize that the odds of people quitting email is low, but all legacy systems fade eventually.
I think the reason the two are still unequal has to do with the amount of control players have. In MUD's, players can often obtain much more realm influencing roles than in MMORPG's. Not to mention, MMORPG's are a money maker, designed to be a time sink. More time = more money. MUD's on the other hand, are community driven, but simply lack the visual side. I also think that if anyone COULD pull off a free expansive world like an MMORPG they would have. Saying MUDs are better because they are like books though is ridiculous. MUD's have the added advantage of not being corporate controlled, and THAT is what makes them more enjoyable to players.
Maybe if the Police found out how useless they would be with auto crime stopper technology, and how quickly their jobs would disappear, they'd be a little less enthusiastic about it.
In addition to that most cars since 1999 have a black box monitoring device to show how fast you were going, whether you braked, etc., prior to an accident. With a little rigging it would be easy enough for them to gather a lot of info between the combined systems, and they could do it from the other side of the planet. *Pulls out the Tin-Foil hat*
In all fairness, you're dad wasn't completely off base. The profit in oil companies comes from us using more fuel. The more efficient cars become, the less fuel we use, and the less profitable they are. Cheaper energy has been touted by scientists as far back as Nikola Tesla, but unfortunately companies chose to invest in what was profitable rather than what was efficient, and we pay the price for it every day.
But it's an example. It shows that although Microsoft is percieved as having an absolute economic advantage due to it's mammoth size and FUD, that it will carry over. In the case of IE vs Firefox, it was the first big decline MS has had in years, showing that they are not invincible. Now that it has happened, more and more people are starting to question if it can be done again, in different ways. Just because two comparisons are not identical, doesn't mean that they cannot be compared as models.
The problem is there's no actual plot to EQ itself other than minor side quests. I played the game for on and off 4 years, and the game is really a large interactive chat room. Auto-attack does the combat, and raids are all about loot drops. Making it single player, although a cool idea, would make for an extremely boring world, as the only substance comes from players.
Referring to the payment by music labels for radio stations to play songs, that is referred to as Payola. It is an illegal practice, and has been that way for about 45 years in the United States.

The scary part will be if someone hacks the system with malicious intent. Next thing you know, a birthday party of gaming turns into a massacre.

So apparently typing in a VIN or License Plate number is too difficult.

No one would stop to order food in Booty Bay. They'd be dead before they could get the menu open...

You'd think with the amount of free labor they've gotten that they could easily increase profits for their shareholders.
Damn, I was really hoping to get first dibs on the copyright joke.

Leave it to Microsoft to take a perfectly functional pre-existing free standard, screw it up, and then be ablt to charge for it.
