I heard of Eugene, Oregon several times over news today, mainly about a gang from there smashing shop windows in Seattle. I remember read some stories about White superamacy gangs in Eugene that beat blacks up etc. I'm suprised that liberal place like Oregon has this kinda radical groups, anybody has more information on that?
I don't think most protesters had china in mind. The march by AFL-CIO was planned 1 year ago, and other groups prepared for months. Nobody was sure China would be in until 2 weeks ago.
Maybe it's because I was from China, and I know many people there liked to be "exploited", just like poor areas here in Urban district in america trying to attract "investments". I normally agree with progressive causes, but not on WTO issue.
Just like in civil right movement, it's admirable that some whites were fighting along with blacks, but ultimately it was fight of black people and nothing could have been achieved without black's leadership and paticipation. If it's a 3rd world's problem, let them fight their fight.
I am aware a lot of US manufacture jobs are lost to 3rd world countries. But protectionism is not the solution. WTO is not the forum. Trying to tie labor and environment into WTO IS making WTO into a world goverment. If you afraid of losing your jobs and want Buccanna be president, say it out loud.

China is in UN security Council not for the nuclear weapon, it's because it inherited the seat occupied by Republic of China (official name for the goverment in Taiwan).
ROC was one of the five Allied countries of WWII. (US, Brits, France, Russia, China). After ROC lost china over communists in 1949, they still hold on their UN seat until 70's, when they were forced to resign (saving the face of being vetoed out). Of course US was on the side of Taiwan.
And China doesn't have enough Nuke to kill off the man kind. I think Ukrine has more Nuke than China has. (pure speculation)
At the height of Chinese-Taiwan tension in 60's, local militia men in the province of Fujian, directly at the shore of Taiwan strait, invent a way to detect Taiwanese infiltrators. The militia would go to a local bus station, got the passengers lined up, and order everyone do "Radio Aerobic Workout", a exercise routine every school childern in Comm. China knows. The one can't follow the music to do the routine were rounded up and send to interrogations.
You'll never fool ppl who uses CDE with a look alike.
People who use CDE are those who stick yellow post-it on the computer monitor panel remind them how to do telnet, ftp, and email;
They are the same people who write down root pass word and put it in their wallets. They are the same people set window screen saver to be "Jesus Loves You" scrolling thru the screen.
They are the same people who send reply email to entire mailing list, and the same people replying the reply by saying "please remove me from this list".

Article of this kind is based on a common myth about art (at least in mid-west state like Minn.). Art (instead of Commercials) is not just for "pleasing" or evoke "oh..." from women pressing their hands to their heart with tilting heads. Art is about relate emotions from painter to the viewer. It can be either beauty and ugliness, either pleasing or offending, uplifting or depressing. Good art does not nessassarily have to "please" you, but to touch your raw emotion nerve.
A good movie such as "saving private ryan" can be bloody and disguisting as any movie can be and still be treated as high achievement. So is painting and other form of arts.
China today is more like a autocratic bureaucracy than communisim. The thing you have to remember is that when you make a deal with "chinese goverment", just exactly which branch of goverment could it be?
As all self-centered human being, Chinese bussinessman like to carry big titles. So a guy from Chinese Dept. of Agriculture can carry VERY impressive name card (you would not be able to imagine), and they struck a deal with you and promise you the sky... it's just the way they do bussiness. It's a "FACE" thing. (i.e. I have more "face" if I carry a big title, so that I am perceived in a stronger position blah blah ).
Different departments in central goverment doesn't really talk to each other much. If you had a deal with Dept. of Electronics Industry, which manages national telecom, then it's serious money.
But Dept. of Electronics Industry has no power (whatsoever) to tell Dept. of Education to implement Linux in University or highschools.
And if your deal is with Chinese dept. of agriculture, then it's almost means nothing except a few servers in agriculture research institute.
I remember in early 80's when I was in high school in Beijing, they "endorsed" Apple II as educational computer, and all high schools got several of them. It's a Dept. of Education decisition because they can "clone" Apple II easily.
Of course, in the next few years Apple II were replaced by IBM PC nevertheless.
"the ideal amount of time to hold a stock for is forever".
Well, if only I can be like Mr. Buffet, buying a large chunk of stock of ABC Inc. and sit in the board room and instruct the company buy supplies from Corp. XYZ (incidentally, Mr. Buffet also has a few shares in it).
I am just pointing out the limitation of the theory of "hold on forever".
I have a Palm V and it can only give a beep with one frequency just like PC speaker. Some WinCE handheld has actual stereo/mono audio mic/earphone jack. (Casio?) To me the audio feature is more attractive than color display.
A Palm with audio can have:
1) act as a memo recorder: 1 minute of 8 kbps mp3 is 60K. so you can reasonably record 10 min. of speech.
2) dial phone number using touch tone frequencies listed here
3) more configurable clock alarm sound and other silly gags.
Many people (e.g. scientists, artits, political activitists etc) can resist the lure of money, but the lure of fame, the desire to be respected by peers and laymen, are still seeked for many people. And the lack of it causes depression of many of them.
Your phone is GSM but not on the same frequency as Eurpeans (or the rest of world)'s GSM standard.

As a former optical engineer (if there was ever such a thing), I have to point out a few facts to my fellow readers.
This tech. is not holographic. Holographic image contains all 3D information of its object, which means when your head shifts, you will be able to see the left side, front and right side of the object in image, continously. Instead of this article claims, only your head is in dead center will you see a 3D illusion.
The 3D trick mentioned in this article will reduce the horizontal resolution of your monitor by half. When you set your LCD to be 1280x1024, you will only see image resolution of 640x1024. Because 2 vertical lines is need to represent 1 "3-D" line.
In order to achieve holographic, the resolution of the image has to be close to the wavelength of visible light, ( 1 micrometer). No LCD display to date can come near to that yet.
