Teoma also makes their sponsored links quite prominant. I use Google mainly, but once in awhile I try Teoma too, and am quite impressed. Teoma's "Refine" feature is really REALLY cool, and works well.
This is a total misnomer. What about 3rd party kernel modules? VMWare? NVIdia? And not only proprietary either.. what about updated bttv or lm sensors? etc etc. I know of at least 6 3rd party modules I have on my system.
...or that the stuff you play doesn't belong to RIAA labels...
What??? Surely this is wonrg... if I record a song and webcast it for free, I don't have to pay anyone anything. Same with any other music not on a label. Correct?
The difference between Internet radio and traditional radio is as the difference between just about anything on the Internet and the traditional way: barrier to entry. The costs of starting up a traditional radio startion fall into the millions and millions of dollars. The cost of starting an Internet radio startion? Well, it depends on the number of listners you want to start with (bandwith usage) but could start being as little as a few hundred a month for a commercial job, or even less if you can run one off a cable modem.
This new per-performance rate, while low and on-par with traditional radio, effectivly kills all the small, independant internet radio startions out there. Sure, huge commerical ones will continue unemcumbered, but the small time ones that played all that hard-to-fnd music will now be gone, unable to pay these fees. In other words, big money has won out again, and the small independant radio station is one again a thing of the past.
If you honestly think that there is some new programming language or technology thats been released in the past 5 years that is a "fundamental shift" away from previous methodologies such that it would require reading a full length book / taking a course, I sure would like you to point me at it.
The only known way to do teleportation is through quantm-entaglement, which by definition requires the destroying of the original in order to re-create the exact duplicate, in real time. No information available to be stored.
People who worry about this thing really ar emuhc more religious than me. There i sno "real you" The only "you" that exists is a mass of biochemical reactions. Your personality is othing more than the mass of your memories, which are stored biochemicly. You have no soul. Consciousness (if there is such a thing) is nothing more than an evolved biological process designed to give homo-sapiens an advantage, just as having a poisinous bite helps species of snakes.
Once you have your BCS and know the basics of coding, just about everything under the sun is a "little question" or "quick howto". All I need to get a handle on a new language or technology is a short tutorial, an example, a link to the reference documentation, and a day or two. Sitting down and reading through a book for 8-12 hours is a waste of time I could be using actually learning the technology hands-on. The only real way to learn is by getting your feet wet.
Name one circumstance in which I would need to have more than one chapter printed off (for bathroom reading?) and I'll conceed. Seriously, if you ar eon a plane and nee done of these books its cause you're coding on your laptop. And if you have your laptop then you have access to the material electorniclly. SO whats the point?
Actually, I disagree with this as well. I dont know why, but reading electronic books is much easier on me. I have never had any probelms with eye strain, but if I read a dead-tree edition of anything, I have a ba dhabit of leaning on one side far too long. this gets me neck cramps etc etc.
If I had my way, every single university textbook I have bought would have been in electronic format. Not only do I find it easier to read, but you also get benefits like searching, etc. And if you need a more portable version of a section, you can always print a chapter or two.
Seriously, you are all sitting in front of the most massive library ever created on earth. Why people insist on paying an arm and a leg for these dead tree compendiums is beyond me. Nont to detract from the authors, or their content (read: Knuth), but anything I ever want to know I can find using google faster than it would take me to even reach towards the bookshelf. Rather than spend a grand or so amassing this library of books, how about spending an hour of your time amassing a usefull bookmarks collection.
Dave Hansen, the IBM Kernel who organized this interview...
Wow, IBM wrote a kernel with embedded AI?? And it was smart enough to conduct an interview??!?! Linux hackers, we have to get cracking, IBM is showing us up!
Yes, but if youd read up on this a bit more, you'd know that the only way known to do this kind of teleportation, the only way known to determine the states of each particle ata given instant, is to destroy the object being teleported. It simple is NOT possible for the read item to not be destroyed. Therefore, if something went wrong during the process, you'd be dead. There is no chance of there being two of you walking around though.
Well, if the person created was the exact same down to the quantum level, it would be you, exactly. Your last memory would be a strange tingling as your body was torn apart at the quantum level to be stored, then once you were recreated your memories would begin again. Now this raises all sorts of philosophical questions, like what happened to your soul when you were torn apart, but really, I dont believe in any of that mumbo-jumbo:P If it was proven to be safe i'd use it, sure.
Surely mission-critical systems such as the stabalizing gyroscopes should each have at least one failsafe? If not I can't see this being very good planning.
Yeah, just like a Dreamcast! Seriously though, every single platform you mentioned already has an emulator on the Dreamcast, plus many others (oringinal Sega Master System, Coleco...), plus it runs Linux and NetBSD and can play DivX files and VCD's and MP3s, and is only 50 bucks!
Its not really spoofing as such. Anyone can change their MAC identification to anything they want with most cards. in linux you do it through ifconfig and in WindNT/2K/XP you can do it in the network control panel. This is another reason I would go with PPPoE or a VPN.
If you are worried about data sniffing, IPSec / WEP is your answer. If however, as I assume, you are worried about "free rides" on your bandwidth, I'd suggest PPPoE. That way no one gets on the network unless they have an account. Seeing how it is a relatively small number pf tenants I assume (less than 500 or so) it should be simple to keep a list of names / logins so as to provide a tenant with two logins should he get a second PC. This method saves you the hassle of managing a bunch of fixed IPs and MAC addresses with everyone on the network.
I just want to know where I can find this "Bob's Tiger Rentals" place. I can think of a few times it would have been nice to be able to just go rent a tiger for a day (during those extremely annoying tech support days perhaps?)
Boeing is dumb???Boeing??? You mean the same Boeing that is one of the worlds leading aerospace companies and handles billions of dollars in top-secret cutting edge Military applications? You mean the same Boeing that helped NASA build the space shuttle?
A company such as Boeing is litterally stacked to the top with PHD's and engineers which most liely make your knowledge look like Mickey Mouse. Even if they did make a mistake on this company, it doesn't mean they are "big and dumb".

Post is wrong. The article says it is 10 Metres not feet. And this is not even the theoretical maximum, it is just what they have so far.

Bzzt. Try again.

There is this remarkable device called a printer. I hear it is quite usefull for these applications. Maybe you should look into it.

People keep saying that to me. So many in fact, I am going to leave it in my sig forever :)

I'm suprised they haven't sent the boys around to break RMS' and Linus Torvalds' kneecaps or roll over them with a bus.
"Buy 'em out boys!"

So you give the guy like 5 logins. Its alot better than hardwiring a MAC to an IP as was suggested, as any PC can log in with any ID.

a big [but likely dumb] name, Boeing.
