Some 3 weeks ago I went to transgaming's website for a gander at how much a subscription costs. I crawled over that thing like a maggot for hours, clicking every link in site, before giving up. I could not find anywhere on the site with pricing info, or where to sign up for a subscription, or how. For a company that wants your money, they sur emake it difficult! Most places have a big "Sig up now!" link on the front page, but not Transgaming. It seems mired in enigma.

Am I just dumb? I hope so. Can anyone post the link that shows how much a subscription is and how you sign up?

If you want to support downloadable tunes, then go join eMusic. For 5 - 10 bucks / month depending on the plan you choose, you can download unlimited tracks from their website. These aren't crappy proprietary tracks either, they are high bitrate MP3's, no restirctions. And I have checked out their content, they have some really good stuff available. Not just a bunch of unknoqns like MP3.com has, they have stuff from all kinds of people including GooGoo Dolls, Rancid, Bush, Green Day, and many more. These artists all have multiple full albums available for download.

So if you really want to show your support go sign up. Or, if you want to keep whining and leeching free stuff from Gnutella, go ahead. But don't complain when the whole MP3 format becomes outlawed when no one uses it but pirates.

Don't forget though, that the GPL allows him to charge a "distribution fee", which the license doesn't even say must be reasonable. He could offer to ship the Lindows source on another CD for $1000, or even $100,000 and it would be perfectly GPL compliant. GPL doesn't mean it has to be available for download, or even come with the OS.

broadband costs the cable company about $12-17 a month, while you are charged $40-70.

Er, that's not really that much of a markup there Jimbo. Do you have any idea how running a buisness works and how much it costs? That markup wont even pay for one tech support guys salary + benefits for one hour of work! Assuming you need at LEAST 1 tech support person available per 100 or so users at any given moment, and these techs earn a modest 15 dollars / hr including benefits, it takes a 30 dollar a month profit just to pay the support guys. Now add in your costs for things like rent, power, heat, and a general profit margin, and see how badly they are "robbing you".
