Um, yes I did read the article, but even there, the article didn't exactly make it clear what was being asked for. There was an implication that "format" was part of the problem.

Beyond that, there's alot of idiotic thinking in the responces that needed responding to.

For example take the Windows XP boot-up. If you boot up and log in, frequently after windows shows its desktop and looks "ready", the disk continues to thrash and will react slowly if you actually attempt to start an application or two.

Physical inventions require physical resources, thus practical costs.

Discovering an formula, which is what all algorithms boil down to, requires mental resources. How do you put a price on thought?

Thought has never been as overvalued as it is right now. If people don't come back to understanding real costs, things will get paid worse.

A programmer shuold not be paid more than a paramedic. Saving a life should be worth more. This is just one example where the system is askew. I maintain it is because of an overvaluing of thought and an undervaluing of action/physical.

Being smart is not everything. Acting, doing is.

The ultimate manifestation of this is the lawsuit company, what Baystar wants SCO to become. No practical output, just patents based on some kind of mental labour that has been overvalued.

    Here here

I deal with usb-dvd drives. There was a very popular hack to make iTunes work for recording with various non-apple-approved hardware. It worked well and easily. When they moved to Panther, they changed the config file to an XML format (good move), but they also diabled the hack by not recognizing some changes to this xml file.

I'm one of those Linux users that might have considered the Mac for a Desktop or laptop at one point, but after seeing that kind of behavior I wouldn't consider even recommending them now.

(They were keying on the IDENT string of the drive. By using the ident you can identiy a vendor's driver to run with. ATAPI/the MMC command set, is a standard, but even it has ambiguities. Vendors tend to be consistant in how they work, within their chipsets.

The old hack was to change the ident string in the file for the appropriate vendor, to match the drive you had.

When you changed this in the new xml file, it still didn't recognize the drive for writing in iTunes, but it did change in the disk formatting utility)

The whole point of computerization is to improve productivity. That may mean less people, same amount of product, or it may mean same number of people, more product.

Unless you do it wrong, you either end up with more product (and the problems related to this..) or less employed people (with its problems as well).

If you do it wrong, you end up with the technology bubble (spending on technology but not really getting any benifit from it).

If you computerize and it requires the same number of people to do the same job, something went wrong.
