    At the end of the day, aside from its own ulterior motives, Apple is just forcing people to be original.

    I just knew they were doing this out of the goodness of their hearts for the benefit of the public.

    The way some people in this thread have been talking you would almost think that Apple is just another faceless corporation abusing the law for no good reason.

    Next you'll be telling me that they are more interested in making profits than they are in producing pretty products to make people happy.

    PS. Because a lot of Apple zealots will be reading this story, I feel the need to point out that the above is sarcasm. The fact that it coincides 100% with your view of Apple is just a reflection on your lack of realism.

    Nope - wish there was something else wrong.

    Installed dual core patches (both MS and AMD), installed processor optimiser and latest drivers, bought a new capture card (osprey 100), tweaked until Id run out of ideas.


    I don't suppose it occurred to you that the software might suck donkey dick? I know it's difficult to imagine such a proposition when it's a piece of free MS software we're talking about, but stranger things have happened.

    Anyway, can't write any more. I need to get back to editing my new High Def Hollywood blockbuster in Windows Movie Maker.

    The "idiots" have actually read the terms, conditions, fees and restrictions which will apply.

    Whereas the non-idiots have just believed the MS press release.

    In summary, you are using a definition of the word "idiot" of which I was not previously aware.

    The thing I wonder about is that I need to upgrade my GeForce4 Ti 4600 because it doesn't have some hardware features (ie pixel shaders 2.0) and not necessarily because its not fast enough.

    Yes, but generally the unsupported features can be emulated in software (e.g. Direct3D can do it). Of course that's really slow. So in summary, you don't need to replace your card because it doesn't support PS2.0, you need to replace it because it's too slow (which just happens to be because it doesn't support PS2.0).

    Sorry, that doesn't really help a great deal does it?

    But then this wasn't about exploiting user privilege levels and elevating yourself to admin was it? The point was that Vista doesn't allow you to load unsigned drivers. It doesn't even allow you to do it as admin. This exploit allows you to load unsigned drivers as admin. So this exploit gets round the code signing and attestation systems. That's really quite significant if you actually understand what it means.

    So are you saying that's boring and insignificant? Or are you saying that what you thought was happening here was boring and insignificant? Don't be embarassed if you were led astray by the Slashdot summary - many other people have uncritical minds too.

    I really do love the fact that all the people who are so concerned about the effects of mobile phone radiation are quite happy to sit in front of televisions. You see, they'll happily freak out about the unproven health effects of microwave radiation on their children but exposing them to hard X-Rays from a CRT doesn't bother them at all.

    Next time you meet one, explain how powerful and dangerous X-Rays are compared to lower energy radiation like microwaves. Obviously you won't change their minds with silly things like scientific facts, but at least you get to increase their paranoia levels another notch.

    People often forget there is a considerable difference in the reliability of ATA drives versus SCSI. If you are going to use some sort of ATA based SAN be prepared for disk failures much sooner than if they were SCSI.

    I tried it on a cluster with 22 nodes. After 2 years I threw it out. One node had one weak bit and it was impossible to find with OpenMosix, as the errors would just seemingly happen on all nodes.

    I would say that if you're not smart enough to do either of the following :

    a) Run Memtest.

    b) Remove one node at a time and test.

    Then you don't need a cluster anyway. So it sounds like it turned out alright in the end.

    PS. Wouldn't it be in their interests to convince people that PeerGuardian does offer protection when it obviously doesn't? Maybe they could acheive that by hiring people to make posts on popular online forums.

    And I hope more users get over the whole macho thing and give up using an OS where every trivial little task becomes some monumental quest where you have to prove yourself worthy by constructing scripts, .rc files and kernel configurations, and switch from BSD and Linux to MacOSX. But that's just my opinion.

    Yes, don't do it the hard way - you might learn something. Then you would be disqualified from ever owning a Mac. It's also completely un-American and will get you put on a number of watch lists.

    And forget about the sense of personal achievement you might get from doing something hard. Buying a product from Apple is a major achievement that instantly makes you better than 97% of the population.

    I like 3D accel, but I'd be quite happy with an unaccelerated frame-buffer - just as long as is stable.

    Go into your xorg.conf and change the "Driver" line to "vga" or "vesa".

    You now have an unaccelerated frame-buffer display that will be as stable as the day is long. It will also suck donkey cock, but it is exactly what you just asked for.

    Also as a person used Xeon systems, Xeon is not a top of the line game/ordinary application performer. It is optimised for corparate/server usage from the start.

    Yes, I hear that Intel removed the x86 instructions responsible for accelerating games and ordinary applications from the Xeon.

    That's what I like about Apple's move to x86 - all of the Mac owners who were previously confined to being ignorant about the PPC architecture on public forums can now be ignorant about x86 as well. It's truly a brave new world.

    Yeah, because overwriting core OS files would be so much harder if the OS allowed it.

    The point the parent was making is that it is very hard to delete malware on a live Windows system because you cannot delete a file that is in use. That is why you often have to boot to safe mode to get rid of spyware etc.. This is not the same as Windows File Protection which he didn't mention at all.

    So in the context of the above, I am finding it rather difficult to ascertain exactly what fucking point you were trying to make with that meaningless one line comment. Was the parent talking about the difficulty of overwriting core OS files? No, he was not. Why are you? Please start you own thread if you want to discuss a different subject, then we can all ignore it more easily.

    Also try and quote what you are replying to. It makes it easier to quickly dismiss posts as wrong and confused.

    I remember having a fight on a CentOS 4 box because the directories I was trying to copy from one drive to another were too long, and causing the command input buffer to not receive the entire command.

    Are you absolutely sure that it wasn't a case of the directory containing too many files for the command to deal with? That seems much more likely from your description.

    It's easy to solve, but since you think the problem is something different I won't bother telling you how. Hope this helps.
