    The OpenBSD crowd had a lot of concerns about bugs in 3.x and performance regressions (in compiling, not in the resulting binaries).

    The OpenBSD team want to build their own "free" C compiler because they don't like the GPL.

    I really hope they try. It will be quite entertaining and should knock them down a peg or two.

    They might be able to produce an over simplified version of NTP with ease, but I think producing a full compiler suite with about one and a half developers is going to be a bit more than they can handle. Should be fun to watch though.

    And just for the record, I do use OpenBSD. It's just unfortunate that it's mostly produced by assholes.

    But IIRC, upgrading my gcc on Fedora Core 2 made it almost impossible to install the NVidia Kernel mod. But then, NVidia is ALWAYS a special case isn't it.

    I'm almost certain that the reason for that is that your kernel was built with a different version of GCC from the one you were building the Nvidia module with.

    You probably missed the subtle clue provided by the Nvidia build scripts - "You're using a different version of GCC from the one used to build your kernel. This won't work - Aborting!!!!"

    It is easy to miss.

    Oh how I long for those heady days in July 2003 when the RPC DCOM exploit was out but no-one had bothered to patch. I spent many a happy evening just sitting there watching the output of tcpdump as the messenger spams came in and then firing back one single packet. And then silence. Or Goatse on their desktop, depending on whether I picked the right offset for their version of Windows.

    I should have also mentioned the early benchmarks which show massive increases in CPU speed for G4's, healthy increases in memory speed for G5's, and no performance hit at all on G3's.

    I can confirm this. I just installed it on my 1.6Ghz G5 and it's now turned into a dual 2.5Ghz G5!

    Given that many of the SP2 changes relate to networks and firewalls, the bigger the corporate network the bigger the chance the upgrade will take some time to get working for everyone in a company.

    I think you're overstating the changes.

    I mean who needs ICMP support anyway? It's good that the SP2 firewall blocks it by default. It stops people using nasty hacker tools like "ping".

    And it stops those unsettling "Fragmentation needed" messages too. I'm not smashing up my PC just because some evil hacker wants me to.

    The maximum line speeds on the UK train network is 125mph, not 60mph. In the former southern region 'commuter belt' typically they are a bit lower, around 90-100mph.

    I spend approximately 4 hours per day on trains commuting between Brighton and Guildford.

    I can't be bothered to look up the distances, but the last time I worked it out it came to an average speed of about 25mph. I shit you not.
