  1. Not only the carriers, also the NGO's on Carriers Delay Paying Japan's Texting Donations · · Score: 4, Informative

I've had a problem in the past with the Red Cross because they do not segregate donations to specific causes (or, at least, they haven't in the past). That means that if you make a donation to the Red Cross for the Japanese disaster, that doesn't mean that your money necessarily even goes to Japanese relief. And if there is any left over after their (often very limited) efforts, it goes back into their coffers--irrespective of how it was supposed to be earmarked.

My grandfather always used to tell me that he would die before he ever gave to the Red Cross. When he was in Korea, the Red Cross used to show up and sell soldiers coffee and donuts (at a profit, no less). No money meant no coffee and donuts for you, G.I.

I'm not disparaging their work (I don't know enough to comment on that). I'm just saying that they need to be much more upfront with people about where their money is actually going.

Following that logic out, if it weren't for the pirates, the music industry would be the largest and richest entity in the world--with revenues bigger than that of the U.S. government.

I feel the same way about The Simpsons. There was a time when The Simpsons could say they never had a bad episode. Now bad and mediocre episodes are the norm.

It's not anyone's business to tell a gay man that he can't enjoy musicals or interior decorating or antiques

    Did anyone propose doing that?

    Stereotypes are bad things

You and every other human being use them every day. If you didn't, you wouldn't be able to survive and thrive very long. Generalizations based on experience are part of the human condition. You look at someone with a frown on their face. You generalize that they are unhappy. You're using the stereotype than an unhappy person is characterized by a frown. Now, it's possible they are not unhappy. Maybe they just ate something sour, maybe they're in momentary physical pain. But you don't just automatically assume that there is an equal chance that they're happy. You make a generalization based on experience with unhappy people. And most of the time, you'd be right. To try to do otherwise in every situation would be more than folly, it would be downright dangerous.

You can't live life pretending that we're all the same. Look at Slashdot. Every day the editors and submitters use the "nerd" stereotype to pick the stories here. Would you have them just pick stories at random? Would you urge them to stop using the nerd stereotype, and include stories on every topic under the sun?
