Duke Nukem Forever Gets Delayed - Again
Blacklaw writes "Duke Nukem Forever, the game that turned into the industry's longest running joke as it entered development hell, has encountered one last delay to its launch."

Ah, memories from childhood. One day my friend told me he had found a kickass game from a BBS and asked if I wanted to go play it with him after school. He described it to me and I was already sold, but but... My mother Giovanna had told me to help my father at our family pizza place after school. Damn it!
School day became to end and I tried to consider my options, but there were none. I had to go help my papa make pizza. Frustraded, almost crying, I walked the streets of Naples back home. Every now and then I watched inside a window on the street and noticed someone playing on computer. I was thinking if that could be it, but I'd never know.
I decided to think for a moment. Like a good oven takes its time and peace to bake and finish a delicious pizza, my padre would wait for me. It was time to go see what the game was about.
And I was amazed. Great looking graphics, funny sounding man that I did not understand and girls with something on their chest that looked like doughnuts with a salami on top of it. It was truly marvelous.
While later serving customers at my fathers pizza place, I couldn't but think that I have to get a computer and this Duke Nukem 3D game. I mean, I loved baking pizza. But there is a time when a boy must choose between leisure and girls. But my father never got me a computer.
Like an overbaked pizza, my dreams were crushed when Duke Nukem Forever never came.
... and it's harder to see where you're going at night than it is in the daytime.
was delayed again
I thought it was really going to happen this time. Man, fool me once shame on you, fool me....like 20 times?
When it was originally announced in 1997, I immediately went out and bought a state of the art Pentium 233 with 4MB RAM and a humongous 1GB hard drive.... it's sitting there waiting...waiting ....
Hopefully it still runs on MS Windows 3.11
And I'm all out of bubblegum!
Seriously, though, this is obviously an amusing publicity stunt by Pitchford's team. No harm done.
Slashdot has been reporting on the delay of Duke Nukem Forever since 1999.
Maybe their CD printer is in Japan?
...but as Christoph Hartmann said - "Duke never comes early"
May 3rd was just the moment I could masturbate again after my frenuloplasty. I was planning to celebrate 4 weeks of abstinence with Duke Nukem, a box of tissue (for my "tears of joy") and a big grin of satisfaction.
I've been waiting for Duke to return ever since the first teaser-trailer.
The moment Duke has arrived, I'll take my moment, lock myself up with headphones, take a week long holiday and kick some alien ass.
(Honey, don't wait up for me. This is a man-thing that needs to be sorted out.)
Well I am big Duke Fan, to the point that once we heard it was finally coming out a friend and I got Duke3D working over WAN which I will share today. Firstly pick up a copy of Duke 3D Atomic Edition (i like this website http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/duke_nukem_3d_atomic_edition) I think the game is in open licensing but not 100% sure. Then download Tunngle from http://www.tunngle.net/ which is a WAN VPN thingy that allows you to play Local network games over the interweb. Install, Start Tunngle, Full screen Duke select network game and you now have multiplayer Duke3D in 2011 (if the game lags its because your internet connection has a high ping time) Side note I hope they keep capture the babe in the new game, could be fun but something tells me it is going to get patched :/
Luke
... muttering, "THAT was nasty," chances are you played too much Duke Nukem somewhere along the line.
I'm telling you, this is whole "We're releasing Duke Nuke'Em Forever" thing is just a very elaborate April Fools Day joke from Gearbox.
SJW: Someone who has run out of real oppression, and has to fake it.
Hopefully it still runs on MS Windows 3.11
You mean MS-DOS 6.2, right? And not that 6.22 crap either. (Dblspace ftw!)
HA HA!
Thecnically, there was never a release date before the game was handed over to Gearbox, so it had never suffered any delay before this one.
"Well Duh!", said with sing song teenage girl voice
I wouldn't be surprised if they had planned to announce one more delay from the start... At this point, it'd almost be a shame to actually ship on the date promised.
"Work is the curse of the drinking classes." -Oscar Wilde
From the Gearbox forums: "It's not a joke. This is not something we would joke about. We have a commitment to our fans to get the game out as early as possible and every day counts. New games are available on Tuesday in North America so we’re getting the game out as early as possible in this territory. The international markets do not adhere to this release timing, and it just happens that they will be able to release the game a few days before North America. We don't want to hold it back, we want to get it into the hands of consumers as soon as possible." http://gbxforums.gearboxsoftware.com/showthread.php?t=119037
I'm not big on gaming, but after all this time I'd probably buy it just because of all the hype -- if you can call it that -- over the years.
I mean, a hasty release wouldn't be good for the quality, right?
Lol, memories. What was the other one, SuperStore or something?
Well is anyone _really_ surprised at this? If I were publishing this, I'd announce a delay even if it was on-schedule, just for the added publicity.
.nosig
Seriously, I got so cynical about this game ever being released that I think even if I played the game through to completion I'd assume there was some reason it wasn't going to be released.
EOM
Stacker!
Maybe they've bent to pressure over the capture the babe controversy and are removing it.
Dblspace? Thats just a dodgy copy of Stacker technology!
I remember DOS 4.01 - buggier than an ants nest :-)
You didn't realize that Slashdot was launched by Taco et al for the sole purpose of tracking Nukem's release cycle?
They started posting other stories as fillers.
Duke Nukem Delayed Forever
Politics is Treachery, Religion is Brainwashing
Does any one care any more? Umm no.
Drvspace was the replacement in 6.22. After MS were unable to get a licence for the Stacker technology used in for dblspace. Stacker had their own product.
What part of FOREVER don't you understand?!
Duke won't be considered "premature" in any sense of the word.
Dblspace? Thats just a dodgy copy of Stacker technology!
Maybe so, but at least it came with the OS. Fond memories of converting 1.44MB floppies into ~2.8MB disks...
OMG 2.8MB that's huuuge! o.O
I was 28 when it was announced and after a late start, finally graduating college later that year. I was psyched to play that game along with Search for spock and Babylon 5. All my dreams of great games were dashed. I'm not 42, and yes, i'll play either of those games till the end. I don't play as much and like the past i'll still play mostly on PC. Grey and bald now but a nice salary, times are a changing.
You guys really went for that????
Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!
Come June, the Earth will open up and swallow the entire development team, all the source code, and every disc manufacturer with a master. Face it, there are powers in the universe beyond our comprehension, possibly Vorlons, that do not want DNF released.
>>>When it was originally announced in 1997... Hopefully it still runs on MS Windows 3.11
Your timing is a little off. The state-of-the-art in 1997 was:
Windows 95 or NT 4.x
Nintendo64 or PS1 or Sega Saturn
I figure by the time Duke Nukem Forever arrives, it will have graphics no better than an N64 or DS.
My AC stalker: " I personally agree with your posts most of the time, but that won't keep me from modding you troll"
And I thought this was going to be the year of the Linux desktop.
The "Forever" part is how long the development process takes.
I understand it requires one of them new 3D graphic accelerators, like a Rendition Verite or Voodoo Rush.

Duke Nuke Em Forever Is coming out on the day the Mayans said the world will end. Mark my words! We have a year and a half to wait boys and girls. We'll all be sit down with our fresh copies of Duke Nuke Em Forever and we'll be watching him take a piss as the world comes to an end
Just when I thought the whole world had gone crazy, DNF got delayed. All is well.
I still think DNF is the greatest hoax ever to be played on the gaming community.
Cute, but I can tell you're a young'n because a Pentium (MMX) 233 would never have come with only 4 MB RAM, the Pentium II was the state-of-the-art in 1997, Windows 95 was out in 1997 (duh), and no good games ran on Windows 3.x. But thanks for playing. Now get off my lawn!

"Damn, that was about time! Now let's kick some asses!"
Shit, the captcha needs me to write "depress"... How cynical...
Dude, you need to check out the new Windows 95. They finally got the B version out, which is great because it allows these new fangled usb ports to work. And mIRC is great, and Mosaic runs well on my Cyrix.
You'll want to boot to DOS still though for games (and Cthuga!). Or just keep a 6.2 box around running QEMM. Oh, well back to Darklands! /music plays me out: Mr. Self Destruct

I searched and searched on a good reference for the USB device (I can't remember my first very well, maybe a mouse). I saw a bunch of places (coping each other) say Apple Quicktake 100 connected by USB, but that seems incorrect. It was just regular serial (RS232). Anyways, if any people see this, tell me your first USB device (or if you know some of the first USB cameras). Thanks...

Cthuga Rocked. Or at least it was faster on a 486 than winamp visualizations..... Thanks for the memory. And making me feel old...

Or perhaps we should say Duke Nukem Delayed Forever!
This is actually incredibly reassuring. Duke Nukem Forever being due out "soon" has been one of those things that has stayed constant since teenage years, while so much else about the world has changed! If it gets released, I'm not sure how I will deal with that. Truly it will be the end of an era. It will go from being a new game, to an old game, to being "retro", in the relative blink of an eye. But in my heart it will still be vapourware.
I think he meant to say Pentium 133 - but even then, 16MB was standard.
Unless he meant 4MB of video RAM?
The Mayans correctly predicted "the end of Forever" at December 2012, back when the game was announced 2,000 years ago.
Stacker actually sold an ISA card with a compression co-processor. That shows you 1) How expensive hard disks were and 2) How far geeks would go.

Wow, that kind of comment makes his claims about mod stalking sound legitimate. His comment was on topic, relevant, and added information to the conversation that others appear to not be aware of. There is nothing trollish or inappropriate in his comment. And yet you found it necessary to make personal attacks against him in a post that adds nothing to the conversation.
Yes, yes it was.
What with the earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear disaster in Japan, the bombing of yet another country, and all else that is wrong with the world right now, this delay helps comfort me and feel like there are some things that we can always count on. Bless you, DNF team.
You see? You see? Your stupid minds! Stupid! Stupid!
'cept for that pesky 32mb partition size limit.
only 4MB of RAM? What year is that from? 1993? My 80MHz 486 had 32MB of RAM and a 0.5GB and 1.0GB harddrive. Don't forget Windows 95 Plus, need directX support.
Awesome post. So spot on, right down to the NIN reference. However I did prefer listing to Jesus and the Mary Chain "Darklands" while playing Darklands - which was the coolest RPG I had played at that point. I don't think I actually ever had any USB devices when I was still running 95 though - I think I was already rocking 98 when I got my first USB mouse.
"But this one goes to 11!"
I can't believe they think anyone would be fool enough to fall for that one again.

I would consider moving away from wherever company that will be releasing/distributing DNF is located. Because we just know, that just when they are about to release it, a meteor or aliens or Godzilla will attack that area and destroy everything in vicinity, preventing it from being released.
After 14 years, what's another month??
with swtor I will kill someone.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
The Apocalypse may still be avoided.
"One last delay"? Really, Slashdot?
This delay is just for old time's sake.
Why did I make the decision to pre-order this a SECOND time? I guess you could call me a dreamer. I am cancelling my pre-order from Amazon today. I will wait until this is on store shelves before getting excited about Duke. Sorry Gearbox, there has been plenty of time to make the game, so delays are pretty inexcusable at this point. Are you seriously telling me that this game has been 12 years in the making, and it gets delayed? Not cool. If they did it for a publicity stunt, it backfired, because if I am dropping my pre-order, I know for a fact that I am not alone. Your possible "publicity stunt" has lost you sales.
The world is how you make it

In racing terms, DNF stands for 'Did Not Finish'.
OMFG Cthuga I remember ever so vividly from high school, back in the times of Geiss visualizations.
THOSE were the days, or was that daze? High school was always a smoky memory for me.
Still waiting on Serviscope_minor to wake up to fucking reality and realize that Jessica Price isn't going to fuck him.
Gilligan's crew has almost worked out a way to get off the island. It took more than one show to describe what happened, so tune in next week for the exciting conclusion.
It even has Do Not Finish in its name.
Wait, what?
They suddenly realized the compiler to build the gold copy was for Pascal.. oops.. dog
"Computers are a lot like Air Conditioners" "They both work great until you start opening Windows"
98 was out when I had a USB mouse; I just didn't have access to a copy ... being still in the time when all you needed was "a copy" unless it as something like Autocad (still have my parallel port with pass through dongle. You know, just in case).
Atlas Shrugged : Thematic Story
I inherited a pre-order of this game when my grandfather passed away.
Yeah, pretty sure I have a couple of Quark dongles laying around in a drawer as well. Ah, the 1990s. Now off to get a 6 pack of Zima and watch some Melrose Place!
"But this one goes to 11!"
I don't think I had but one Cyrix machine, and not for very long. Should have thrown in a Gateway reference :). Cthuga: people need to know the "inspiration" behind Winamp visualization.
CoolEdit forever baby! (What, it's owned by Adobe now? You say, it's all corporate and they removed from the help file all the stuff about "brainwave synchronization". Binaural Auto-Pan? Bleh! No offense to the creators though, I would have taken the money too.)
Atlas Shrugged : Thematic Story
Man, I thought I was the MAN when I got my 4 MB video card. I think that was around the Starship Troopers/Tyrian days, now those were some graphics.
Is 1563649 a prime number?
Well that means we'll only have to wait till 2024 until we get the sequel to Shadow Warrior....fingers crossed.
I think people would be disappointed if it didn't get delayed...We fear the worst: When the next Duke Nukem ships, the world has really gone to hell...
After all, I payed 10$ in order to play multipler games over tcp/ip.
Shouldn't that be "yet another delay"? Given DNF's (incredibly long) track record, the odds of this being its last delay are infinitesimal. Heck, I'm betting that once I buy it the installer will get to 99% and hang.
Never let a lack of data get in the way of a good rant.
Pentium 233 MMX was released in June of '97. Most of us had upgraded to 95 SE 2 by then. ;)
You got ripped off, Duke Nukem 3D required 8MB of ram to run properly. You'd want at least 64 megs of ram on that beast.
Not to mention Forever is probably for Windows 95 at least.
Must still be trying to add that wiimote support.
I know people who were running 3.11 in 1999 -- not everyone jumped on the Win95/98 bandwagon.
However, considering he bought new hardware, you'd think he would have also got 95C (integrated Internet Explorer!) which was out by that point (heck, win98 was out in some places by then).
Why would anyone be so bold as to say that this is the "last" delay?
Oh cool, they have internet access over dial-up now? Awesome, now I can ditch my cable modem!
No they didn't.
That is a strange comment. Anyone that looks at my previous posts could clearly see that I am not the other poster. I know it is hip to accuse anyone that makes a comment you don't like of being a "sock puppet", but that doesn't make it so. I don't even get what you are talking about with CP and the police? Are you suggesting that I have done something illegal?
I was lucky enough to have a 1.44MB floppy drive that had no problems with NFORMAT 1.74MB disks. If you stacked those, you could get almost three and a half megs out of a single floppy.
Has anyone realized that DNF stands for Did Not Finish?
HMMMMMMMm......
I actually have more faith in gearbox than I ever did with 3d realms.
3d realms even admitted DNF was a publicity stunt to get more investors.
The sad part about DNF is I was a 5th grader when it was announced, I'm almost 25 now. My cousin's oldest kid will be as old as I was when they announced this game when (if) it comes out in June.
I hear tell that Duke Nukem Forever is written entirely in Perl 6.
When spore was released, a friend had preordered and my girlfriend at the time drove him to pick it up.
Upon returning, she mentioned that the store manager had told him "there was a last minute delay and it wouldn't be out for another few months, and you could just kinda see David's soul dying and tears start to well up."
Another friend then replied "He should've saved that joke for when Duke Nukem Forever finally comes out."
Bet that manager is kicking himself now.
'Last' person shooter
The world hears that Duke Nukem Forever is delayed again. Millions die from non-surprise.
I guess when somebody said they should delay it for old time sake, somebody producing this game took that seriously!
So, anyone know if they will make this available for purchase and download via a system like Steam?
Period.
