If we could do that in the U.S., you can bet our scores would be a LOT higher too. Just look at the spread in the average city between the good schools and Gangbanger High. Anytime you provide a way for a school to consciously limit its enrollment, that school is going to do a lot better than one that has to take in everyone.

Actually, the joke is "Lotteries: A tax on the stupid." And that's because even a moron with a primary school education can appreciate what "1 in 50 million" means. It isn't that idiots play lotteries because they don't understand the odds. They play them because they have a quasi-religious faith that IT'S GOING TO HAPPEN THIS TIME, NO MATTER THE ODDS--or, alternatively, because they're simply gambling addicts.

Like I said, if people realize it's a gimmick and start abandoning the 3D versions in favor of the 2D versions in droves, that could end it. But I don't see that happening so far.

  9. Let's face it on Has Christopher Nolan Turned the 3D Argument? · · Score: 5, Insightful

The reason the studios are pushing so hard on 3D is because there is a lot of money in it. They can charge a lot more for a 3D ticket. And once the overhead on the equipment is paid (the projector for the theater, the cameras for the production, the trivial costs of some cheap plastic glasses), all that extra money is almost pure profit. The reason that Nolan is able to resist their push is because he's already established himself with the franchise. If they were appointing a newbie to do it, you can bet they would be TELLING him to do Batman in 3D.

3D has always a been dubious contribution to the art. For every James Cameron who likes to see what he can do with it, there are dozens of filmmakers who have it foisted on them by the studio (many of them after-the-fact). And while the big boys can resist, I doubt the pressure will let up anytime soon. As long as there is money to be made, the studios will ride this train. The only thing that will stop it would be if audiences starting to forgo the overpriced 3D versions for the 2D versions in droves, or if some kind of studio/theater price war started on 3D tickets (making it difficult for the studios to rape us so easily).

Is this a fad that probably SHOULD pass? Maybe. Is it being overused now? Definitely. Is it going anywhere, as long as the studios can reap big money off of it? Almost certainly not.

I can still remember sitting in a theater in 1983 and hearing the sold-out audience in a huge (by today's standards) theater go absolutely batshit when Vader threw the Emperor down that shaft. We cheered so loudly that they heard it way out in the mall next to the theater. These days, with big movies playing on so many screens in relatively small theaters, you just don't see huge crowds like that much anymore (and this wasn't even some midnight showing, mind you, this was a daytime show). I think even if the prequels had been better, they still wouldn't have been able to match that. These days it's hard to get the same kind of experience--with tiny theaters, dozens of multiple screens, and home video.

Kennedy has always attempted to be a fair mediator between the left and right impulses on the Court. But he really blew it on this one. His attempt at moderation in this case has taken an already out-of-control problem and made it much worse. This ruling will ensure that individual citizens are forevermore completely and totally drowned out in our government by corporate interests and their puppet foundations/non-profits. It was almost that way *already*, but now the big interests won't even have to *try* to hide their bribery. And, thanks to this, nothing short of a Constitutional amendment will ever stop corporate control of the government now (and good luck getting a 2/3's majority in a Congress owned by those corporations). Thanks Anthony!
