You know that "These are the same as the real deal, we just swiped them from the factory that makes them off the books" line is an ancient con, right? When my Dad was stationed in Korea back in the 80's, they made a bunch of stuff there too (like Nikes). And so the street counterfeiters would use that "we get these from the same factory" line to sell their crap to American GI's. But their stuff wasn't the same. They were cheap knockoffs designed to LOOK like the real thing. My Dad fell for it and sent me a bunch of Nikes. But when you put them beside REAL Nikes, it was clear they were just poor knockoffs, with cheaper material and weak stitching. I didn't have the heart to tell my Dad he had been conned.
Oh, the iPod works wonderfully with other online stores.
Yeah? Name one other store that Apple has licensed Fairplay to. Name one model of iPod that will play DRM'ed files from any other music store besides iTunes. Sounds like the perfect monopoly to me.
Anyone using a 3" screen and not expecting to scroll when surfing is pretty stupid too. I personally still consider 800x600 into my designs (though I target a higher resolution), but I can understand why designers are leaving it behind. A 800x600 site viewed at the much higher resolutions that most people use today looks like shit.
Bundling an app to hurt a competitor & expand into their space when you're already a monopoly is anti-competitive.
You mean like Apple and does with iTunes?
Yes, because Apple is *SO* open to competition with its bundled iTunes software. Nope, they're not interesting in maintaining it as a monopoly at all. That's why iPod works *SO* well with other online music stores.
LOL, I just got a picture in my head of some poor bastard being put in charge of stripping down Vista to run on a computer that can't even handle the full version of XP. The poor bastard would be suicidal in a week.
I like the idea of an "XP Lite" too. But I bet Dell and the other hardware manufacturers (who want to sell you the latest, greatest computer) will raise Hell at the idea of releasing a new OS for old computers. They'll probably raise Hell as it is (since MS has been pushing THEM to get rid of even the full version of XP).
I predict 100 posts from people saying "Apple can do whatever they damn well want with their OS!" from the very same people who scream bloody murder if MS so much as includes a media player with their OS.
The problem with management here is that they're intimidated by IT. Every time management presses them on anything, they just spout off some technical excuses and management backs down. Now *I* know the technical excuses they're using are a bunch of lazy BS. But management doesn't (and are more inclined to listen to IT's line that to believe one lone user like me, however skilled). The typical pattern goes like this (repeated ad infinitum):
Management: Any progress on that internal website? Me: My part is done. I'm waiting on IT to get their server online Management: Well, give them a call and see what the problem is Me: Hello IT, what's the deal? IT: We're having some trouble [insert latest excuse here] Me: A first-year CS student could have set this thing up ages ago. IT: We need to hire another consultant. We'll get back to you. Me: Hello, management? IT says they need more time Management: Well, let's give them one more chance.
Rinse...wash...repeat....
Two years of "one more chances." My boss came to me yesterday and started the cycle yet again. I wouldn't care if it didn't make ME look bad to (my Boss always seems to think there is something *I* can do about it, as if IT takes orders from me).
And lots of us are trying to get our job done without IT constantly getting in our goddamned way and making life a huge pain in the ass.
Over two years ago, I was tasked with developing an internal website (employees only) for my agency, with a few simple apps (like a master calendar). I knew when management said it had to go through IT that it would never get done. It took me a few weeks to design the website and all the scripts (wouldn't have taken me that long if I could have done it in php instead of asp). I then spend the next 2 years fighting with the IT department to actually get it on one of their servers. They still haven't got it working (even after wasting a ton of money hiring consultants to set up a simple webserver with an ldap client). I doubt they ever will.
Many of us superusers hate our IT departments for good reason. Some IT departments won't lead, won't follow, and won't get the hell out of the way. They're just an obstacle that never helps, only hurts.
Most of those shows are shit. "The Office" and "Absolutely Fabulous" are about the only two BBC shows I've liked in the last two decades. The other 99% of BBC shows are every bit as poorly written as their American counterparts, and with lower budgets.
There IS basically ZERO students loans programs in the US.
I'm calling MAJOR BULLSHIT on that one. There are generous loan programs available at every university and college in the U.S., even to the middle and upper class. You can even get outright grants if you're poor enough.
Until two generations back, my family was made up of a bunch of illiterate subsistence farmers who could barely afford to eat. Can I use that as an excuse when I fuck up too?
Why do you think the U.S. has been offering safe haven to Jedi's for all these years? The power to destroy a planet is insignificant next to the power of the Force!
Providing better crops to a non-industrialized, poorly governed nation will not improve life there. They will just have more kids, feed more money into an already corrupt system, and end up right back where they started.
You mean that Monster Cables running to Bose speakers WON'T make me cool?

"Story by B. Gates, S. Balmer"
So Windows should only be allowed to come with the kernal?

And that they HAVEN'T got convicted has no bearing on the immorality of Apple and Canonical doing the exact same thing.
Oh wait...

A lot of websites look like crap on 800X600 too. Many designers have stopped targeting that resolution.
But when Apple and Linux distros do it, it's okay? And it was okay for MS to do it BEFORE they lost their monopoly court case? Okay, now I'm clear.
I like the idea of an "XP Lite" too. So we complain when MS bundles in a bunch of apps that it's monopolistic. Now are we going to complain that it sucks when they don't?
I have used Windows since ver 3.1 and have never once had any problems installing or running alternate browsers (Netscape in the 90's, later Mozilla).
I predict 100 posts from people saying "Apple can do whatever they damn well want with their OS!" from the very same people who scream bloody murder if MS so much as includes a media player with their OS.

I'm in South Carolina, and much of said redistricting comes from black politicians wanting to keep their jobs in majority black districts too.
