    Using the probabilities means that at any given moment there's a 20% chance they'll be checking Lane 1 and a 30% chance they'll be checking Lane 2, but it doesn't tell you whether you should try to smuggle contraband through 1 or 2.

    It tells me your 50% more likely to get caught in Lane 2 than Lane 1.

    the congress gave up their power to declare war and gave it to the president just after 9/11. yet another constitutional violation of this administration.

    Congress abdicated their duty to declare war long ago. They haven't declared war since WWII (nor have they made any effort to stop the unconstitutional wars since then).

    For europeans, american 'beer' is no beer.

    If by "american beer" you mean Bud/Miller/Coors. However there are hundreds of American micros that produce excellent beer in far more styles than you'll find in Europe. American beer is far from being limited to the mass produced light lager produced by the aforementioned major breweries.

    Not to mention the linked article is so poorly written and lacking in details that after reading it I had no idea what had actually been shown. As to why this is important, I'm no analyst so I'm not going to read the entire paper, but it appears that he's made improvements to computing such a conformal map, which was previously more computationally difficult.

    They did not patent the crap execution of the idea, just the idea itself.

    Exactly. My uni decided all of the available options on the market sucks and wrote their own (much better in my opinion). On the surface it sounds like they'd be infringing on this patent as well, though I doubt they're as prime a target for litigation as I think it's only used here.

    Maybe it's just the cynic in me, but maybe that's the very reason that you're hearing a lot from Obama and not a lot from Ron Paul. The media seems to like the status quo.

    How are they determining whether a file is one of these formats? I guess the obvious answer is file extension (easy to get around), and the nonobvious one is actually examining the file (also not difficult to get around with a short script upon uploading and downloading). I'm really not sure how they would actually stop you from uploading any file.

    Not really. Mathematical statements are ironclad; if the hypotheses are satisfied, the conclusion is true. That's the whole idea of a proof. You can quibble all you want about whether the hypotheses are actually satisfied (which will implicitly include ZF, or the proof may involve Zorn that you could philosophically disagree with) but the statement is a true one. What I mean, is you can argue all day about whether the Axiom of Choice is true or not, but the statement "If the axiom of choice is true then every commutative ring contains a maximal ideal" is perfectly rigorous.

    This would be useful if it would tune to different keys. Since the third is slightly off (15 cents if I remember right), tuning it to the exact note doesn't give you the perfect major third. It would be nice to be able to tell it "Key of G" and have it tune the B down, then tell it "Key of E" and have it tune the B back up.

    No, college bookstores don't want you to do price comparisons. Mainly because their prices are always higher than you can find at Amazon and others. Amazon likes you to do price comparisons because they usually come out on top.

    More H-1b visas only helps those hiring techies, it depresses the wages of the techies themselves, for instance.

    Hiring someone who does as good or a better job than you for cheaper instead of you means your company can save money; hence, your company's customers can save money. The only person who isn't benefited is the person who only had a job because government regulation (via H-1b visas) restricted the market.

    Not that such a thing would ever be meaningfully implemented anyway, but I can't imagine the second half of that *helping* research.

    It's not supposed to help research. It's supposed to help women and minorities.
