No anti-virus or anti-spyware for me. But I am behind a firewall. But isn't everybody? Would you connect your Linux or BSD or OSX or Solaris or... box directly the 'net without any sort of bastion?

Tell me, honestly, how often does a Windows XP computer not running Roxio CD Creator crash? For me, never. I've been running XP since it was released. I have no problems. In fact, I haven't done that "reinstall every six months" thing since before XP was released.

Amen. My next-door neighbor drives her kids to the bus stop and they wait in the running car until the bus comes. I see this all over the place on my commute to work in the morning (45 minute commute, my wife and I carpool, btw). In my neighbor's case, it's amazingly sloth because the bus stop is three doors down from their house. Yes, she drives them 100 yards to the bus stop every day.

"I doubt many software engineers got into the business to write documents."

No, that's just it. People often ask the difference between a Software Engineer and a Computer Scientist. This pretty well covers it. Ideally, a Software Engineer is an Engineer like any other. A major portion of their work is designing and documenting. Like how a Structural Engineer would create blueprints. Also ideally, a Computer Scientist is a scientist like any other. He investigates the world of computer software - experimenting and recordign the results.

In the real world, the roles of both blurr into "the customer wants this, code it." But to live up to the title of Software Engineer, you need to be much more proactive and be very involved in the non-programming aspects such as requirements gathering, documenting, designing, documenting, prototyping, documenting, and documenting.

Here's the obligatory rebuttal. You're forgetting the software. You can put Linux on it for free, but you're not getting nearly the user experience you get with a Mac. Or you can pay for Windows and the software that runs on it. That will bring up the cost of that $450US system. Still, not the same user experience. With a Mac, it's the compete system your paying for, not just the hardware.
