haha, i wish i had that for school, tiny little wireless in ear headphones with some kind of unobtrusive controls and a tiny media. Unfortuantley by the time these come out, we'll be forced to pay-per-listen for every song we so much as hear a blip of while walking down the street, so no way you'd have 100 songs in your possesion:( The hearing aid thing reminds me of Montag's in ear Seashell-radio-but-really-a-radio-transmitter thing from Fahrenheit 451, scary

On eastbuy2000's site they say it can only do between 32-192 kbit/second. This really sucks because most of the CDs i've encoded are 224kbps, and there's no way i'd downconvert them for this, besides I got my minidisc from mobshop for $127, though it did take 4 weeks to ship, this does look cool, considering that you could fit 10h of music on it though.
DVD-RAM, which I think is what you're refering to when you say DVD Recorder, isn't *that* much better than CD-R, its only 2.6gb. However, CD is ubiquitous(sp?) and will play on anything, while DVD-RAM is proprietary and would require a special drive that was able to load the cartridges. If they were to make an in-dash DVD player (Panasonic has already) that would also read DVD-RAMs with MP3s on them, it would be useful, but it would also have to read CDR/RW if they wanted people to buy it. If you mean DVD Writer as a drive that writes DVD-R discs that play in a DVD machine, then you're looking at about ~$3000 for a Pioneer burner which is WAY too steep for putting some MP3s on
I wouldn't bother with the discman sized device. I'm using my Sharp MD-MT15 for storing my mp3s. Its cheap (about $200 retail, $180 or less online) and works well. All you have to do is hook the line-out of your soundcard into the line-in of the MD recorder and play your mp3s, if you put a 2 second space between the mp3s, the MD will make the track markers for you. Now, the MD-MT15 is not one of the smallest mindisc recorders (about the size of 3.5 MD cases stacked), but it fits well into a pants pocket where you can leave it be, it *never* has skipped for me, and the discs are small enough that you can carry several hours worth without them becoming a burden. OTOH an MP3 discman would hold more music, but would be more bulky and possibly prone to skipping. Also, the MD has excellent editing capabilites that the MP3/CD-R combination doesn't. The ATRAC encoding used in MiniDisc is also superior to MP3 (its also 292kbps ) in quality, and I haven't heard any artifacts when putting my music on it. As far as cars go, I'd probably prefer the MP3 CD because you don't have any size constraints, and its better to have more music.
The iiyama monitors use Mitsubishi's DiamondTron Natural Flat tube. I have an NEC 17" flatscreen made with a DiamondTon NF and the quality is spectacular. The IBM and SGI monitors are AFAIK nothing but high priced rebadged Sony monitors, which use Sony's Flat Display Trinitron tube. The differences between the FD Trinitron and DiamondTron NF are very slight, from what I remember when I was buying the NEC, the DiamondTron was a bit darker and had richer colors, but the Trinitron might have been a little sharper. I have seen the iiyama VisionMaster 450, and it is amazing, the IBM and SGI are probably no different than the Sony monitors. If you want to check out the tube difference, most stores carry the Sony FD line and the NEC FE/FP line. All of the monitors that you mention are of the top 1% of monitor quality anyway, so any of them should be fine for whatever you plan on doing with them.
Seriously, I gutted an old SGI Indigo with the intent to fit it with PC parts, but I never got around to it, but if several hours of work will get me some fame on slashdot, wow I should actually get around to going that, right now its doing nothing but making a nice spot for my cat. For all those SGI lovers out there (are there any?) the machine was dead when I got it, I wouldn't gut a perfectly good SGI to put a PC in it.
The webpage referenced descibes modifications to the Mac Color Classic (and Color Classic II which was never released in the US) Almost all of the mods are done by replacing the Classic motherboard with one from an All-In-One mac like the educational models. Since the motherboards are similar enough, they can be hacked to fit into the case of the classic. Also, most people tweak the little 9" trinitron to 640x480 so it can actually be used for real work. Some people even go as far as to replace the 603e in the LC motherboard with a G3 upgrade chip, making one crazy fast classic. To me this seems like crazy stuff, but I'm sure some people enjoyed doing it. Looks like a sweet hack.
Just get xtend, It lets you assign commands to X10 events like A1 ON and A2 OFF using the CM11A (PC Serial-> Powerline box), Right now i have it set up so that A3 OFF to 'xmms -r' and A3 ON to 'xmms -f' so I can change songs from my bed using the IBM RF X10 Home Director Remote. There's a 3-5 second delay between button pushes and song changes. If you had the big white pad looking remote, you could probably assign different ON/OFF buttons to load playlists, etc. and set volume using aumix or something. Anyways, this worked for me and the remote works everywhere in the house, so I can change songs from anywhere. Hope this helps...
In almost every episode they mention that they will have to cut parts out during post production, but these parts are still in the episode, so what *are* they actually editing out of these episodes. It keeps me up all night wondering what these guys are talking about that needs to be cut out. Seriously though, does anyone have a clue where you could rent the Serial Experiments Lain DVDs, my local Blockbuster doesn't have them, and I'm too poor to afford them.
Its korea (samsung.co.kr) also yopy.org and gmate have more information than samsung's site. It seems that gmate is the company that is making these, and samsung is rebadging them, or is gmate a part of samsung. It says that they will have a world release in March, which has well, already passed, word is that it's coming out around june.
The YOPY doesn't run GNOME, it looks like its running something other than X entirely, which is probably a good idea because X would suck up CPU time(and battery life) and speed on a device of this size. Also, the YOPY doesn't seem to be marketed to the techie market at all, it seems to be competing with the CE/Pocket Windows devices and palms which are going for the consumer market
Its not what the letters YOPY stand for, its what type of 'image' the product has. Apparently, samsung is trying to go for the young and affluent (read yuppie) type of people, the same kids who run around with thier nokia 51xx phones calling their friends all day to talk about nothing, still looks cool though, but i'd like some kind of wireless X pad over this.

But from the other problems you describe it seems like a bad idea in general, especially when dotster.com has domains for $15 and joker.com for 12Eu, which is pretty much nothing considering that its like $1.25 a month if you think of it that way
I'm waiting for a Mobile Communications Device (MCD?) that combines the functionality of a cell phone, two way pager/email, minidisc/mp3 player, web browser, palm VII. The only issue with a device like that would be the size, and unless you'd have some head mounted display, I don't see how you would be able to have a web browser that would also make a decent phone, unless it filpped open like the Nokia 9xxx(?) does. As far as memory sticks go, they seem like a bad idea, we should stick to standards like CompactFlash or MiniDisc for storing our music, where there are many brands of players (yeah, i know sony licensed MS to some other companies so don't flame) available as well as CompactFlash adapters which work in every laptop regardless of operating system. Also, Sony is heavilly backing SDMI which is a Bad Thing, but it won't stop me from buying sony, especially if they come out with This in the States *drools*
Hmmm...I'm sure that somone from O'Reilly will be seeing that today, they sure are lucky I already bought the Perl CD Bookshelf because after seeing that I probably wouldn't have, or maybe I would, it sure would be a hard decision, but I proably would have bought it anyway for the Perl In A Nutshell book that comes with it, plus I'd rather have the original CD to read the other books off of
funny thing is, that IE 5.0 does almost all the PNG stuff properly (except gamma). I wonder how well mozilla does this (*fires up mozilla M15*), it still has many of the problems you speak of, and images that it can't handle just come up blank, as do the illegal ones.
I'm holding out until there's a 1lb cell phone/palm VII/text pager/web browser/mp3 player with a 4" color screen. Did I mention that I'm not buying until I can get a 2mbps wireless connection for $15/month, heheheh. This thing does look cool, but it seems like it would be more practical for demoing things like linux to companies, imagine just plugging this little box into their network and showing them all the things they could do, then tell them that the OS is free and that they get all the source code, It would really make an impression on them how well linux runs on cheap consumer grade hardware, and how it would run even better on an ultra super mega server that costs $10,000. For now, I'm sticking to MiniDisc for my music and staying away from all types of computing while out of the house...

I dissagree...If you look at almost any college student's computer, you'll be sure to find WinAmp and tons of skins to go along with it. The younger people in this world obviously can adapt to these widget changes without being tech savvy. If you're referring to themes as in E themes and gtk+ themes, then you are mostly correct in that, except there's tons of newbie linux users who install it for that 'cool' desktop, and wouldn't be what you would call 'hackers' I think you're right about the themes and work not going together, I have my linux box running E+GNOME and I can never get work done on it, but on my laptop running Win95, its easier to work on...I don't know why...
Recently a student at my school exposed himself to some girls at the local middle school and is being expelled. None of the newspapers so much as mentioned the crime which included threats of rape...Also the "Police Beat" in my town seems a bit tamer now...
I've been looking into OpenBSD for a while to replace Linux on my firewall, and it seems like its much better suited for the job. Many people overlook the *BSDs, but Linux has become too mainstream for my tastes:). I should be putting OpenBSD 2.6(+?) on my IP Masq box over spring break...btw a good book on using OpenBSD for this stuff is Configuring Linux and OpenBSD Firewalls, it's like $35
